Most 3D printer owners need a small set of basic tools, not a large universal maintenance kit: the hex keys specified for their printer, needle-nose pliers, a clean cloth or paper towels, and a small brush. A small brass brush is useful for exterior hotend residue when the printer’s guide recommends it. Add cleaning filament, unclogging needles, compressed air, or lubricant only for a task your model’s instructions call for.
What to keep in a basic 3D printer toolkit
Start with the tools that suit routine cleanup and simple handling. Exact tool sizes and safe cleaning methods vary by printer, so use the manual for your model rather than treating any list as universal.

Prusa’s CORE One/+ maintenance guide, MK4/S and MK3.9/S guide, and MK3.5/S guide list several of these as useful tools. They are examples for those printer families, not instructions for every brand or printer type.
What to add only when a job calls for it
Small brass brush for exterior hotend residue
Prusa recommends a small brass brush for cleaning residue from the outside of the nozzle or heaterblock in its CORE One/+ and MK4/S-family instructions. This is a limited-purpose tool, not a way to clear a clog inside the nozzle. Follow your own printer’s procedure: the cited Prusa procedures involve warming filament residue, and hot parts can cause severe burns. Their specific temperature and shutdown steps should not be transferred to another model.

Compressed air for permitted dust-removal tasks
Compressed air is optional. Prusa lists it for some maintenance tasks, but its guidance cautions against holding a canned-air can upside down; the XL instructions also give precautions for work near electronics. Check your model’s directions before using it.
Cleaning filament or unclogging needles for a specific clog
Cleaning filament and needles are task-specific supplies, not routine necessities. Prusa’s HT90 kit, for example, includes cleaning tools and needles for that model’s hotend; its HT90 kit documentation is not evidence that those tools fit other printers.

For a partial clog, Prusa describes a cold pull for the applicable printer families when filament still extrudes. Its instructions say not to use the cold-pull method with Nozzle X; use cleaning filament instead. A completely blocked nozzle calls for the relevant clogged-hotend procedure, not an improvised needle or force. Consult the instructions for your printer and nozzle type: Prusa cold-pull guidance for several printer families and its legacy-family guidance explain their model-specific procedures.
Lubricant and applicator for specified moving parts
Do not buy a generic lubricant on the assumption it works for every rail, rod, bearing, or lead screw. Product and application points vary. Prusa’s CORE One/+ guide distinguishes lubrication for smooth rods and bearings from care for linear rails and warns against applying its ordinary Prusa Lubricant to those rails. Its XL guide calls for a dedicated linear-rail lubrication set and warns against using other products on the rails. Other Prusa models have their own directions; identify both the printer and component before buying or applying lubricant.

The intervals are model-specific too. Prusa recommends lubricating linear rails every 3–6 months in its CORE One/+ and XL guidance. The XL guide also describes inspection at around every 200–300 printing hours. These are manufacturer recommendations for the cited models, not universal intervals.
Alcohol or other surface cleaners
Use only a cleaner permitted for the surface you are cleaning. Some printer guides specify alcohol for particular jobs, but that does not make isopropyl alcohol a universal cleaner. For example, the CORE One/+ guidance says not to use alcohol products, including IPA, on its panels. Check the print-sheet and frame instructions separately.

Choose tools by task, not by kit size
Before buying a bundle or specialty supply, match it to the job and the machine:
- Task: Decide whether you need to remove loose debris, clean exterior hotend residue, address a partial clog, or lubricate a moving component.
- Compatibility: Check your printer model, hotend and nozzle type, motion-system design, and required tool sizes.
- Frequency: Basic cleanup tools may be used regularly; clog-clearing supplies and lubricants are needed only when the relevant task arises.
- Risk: Hot surfaces, electronics, print-sheet coatings, and incompatible lubricants can be damaged by the wrong method or tool.
- Kit contents: A manufacturer’s maintenance kit may contain model-specific tools, replacement parts, filters, or other supplies. Read its contents rather than assuming “maintenance kit” means universal coverage.
There is no established comparable price or performance evidence here showing that a bundle is better value than assembling tools individually. Compare the actual contents with the tasks you expect to perform.

Check the manual before maintenance
Before applying heat, lubricant, solvents, compressed air, or force, consult the exact printer’s instructions for tool sizes, power isolation, safe temperatures, cleaning products, lubrication points, and compatible replacement parts. The Prusa guides linked above cover selected Prusa models; they are not a service manual for other FDM printers or resin printers.
