Use a brass nozzle for most unfilled filament, such as ordinary PLA or PETG. Choose hardened steel when you print abrasive-filled filament that can wear brass. Steel resists abrasion better but transfers heat less efficiently, so your printer may need calibration. Before ordering either material, check that the nozzle’s format and dimensions match your hotend and printer.
Choose by the filament you print
| Filament | Practical nozzle choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Unfilled PLA/PLA+, PETG, ABS/ASA, TPU, or nylon | Brass is a practical default. | Brass transfers heat efficiently and is inexpensive to replace, according to Kobee’s comparison guide. |
| Abrasive-filled filament, including some carbon-fiber or glow-in-the-dark blends | Hardened steel is a common wear-resistant choice; check the filament maker’s guidance. | Hard particles can wear a brass nozzle bore. Prusa recommends hardened steel for abrasive filaments, while Polymaker’s PA612-CF technical data sheet recommends a wear-resistant nozzle. |
| Polymaker PolyMide PA612-CF | Follow the specific filament guidance; it recommends a hardened metal-coated brass nozzle for this filament on a general desktop printer. | Its documentation also lists hardened steel and ruby as wear-resistant options. This example shows why “filled filament” does not always mean one nozzle choice: consult the exact blend’s current instructions. See the product information sheet. |
What changes when you switch to hardened steel?
Better resistance to abrasive wear
Carbon-fiber and other hard fillers can abrade a nozzle over time. A worn bore can affect extrusion, so a more wear-resistant material is useful when the filament’s documentation warns about abrasion. Glow-in-the-dark filament is another example Prusa gives for abrasive materials. The precise nozzle recommendation can vary by filament formulation.

Less efficient heat transfer
Hardened steel transfers heat less efficiently than brass. That difference can affect how the filament melts and flows, so a profile that worked with brass may not work identically with steel. Do not assume throughput or print settings will remain unchanged.

- Start with the filament maker’s temperature range. Check the current technical sheet for the exact material and any nozzle recommendations.
- Use the nozzle maker’s guidance for your specific part. For its hardened-steel E3D V6 nozzle, Prusa says you may need to increase hotend temperature by about 5°C. That is product-specific advice, not a universal offset.
- Calibrate the setup. Make a small test print and adjust temperature or flow as needed for your printer, hotend, nozzle, and filament combination. Kobee’s comparison guide likewise advises calibration rather than treating one setting as universal.
Check compatibility before buying
Nozzle material alone does not determine fit. Match the replacement to your printer and hotend, checking the nozzle format, thread, dimensions, and any required adapter. Product listings can specify model compatibility and exclusions: for example, Prusa’s brass CHT 0.6 mm listing identifies compatible models and adapter information. Do not assume that a nozzle that fits one printer or hotend will fit another.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The cited guidance supports a qualitative choice: brass for ordinary unfilled filament, hardened steel when abrasion resistance matters, with possible tuning for steel. It does not establish a controlled, comparable lifespan or cost-per-print advantage for either material. Actual replacement timing depends on the filament and use; no single lifetime figure applies across setups.
