It does not mean every device will download at 1,000 Mbps: the plan’s upload rate, your router and devices, Wi-Fi conditions, and the server you connect to all affect the result.
What does 1,000 Mbps mean?
Mbps means megabits per second, a measure of data-transfer rate. Since eight bits make one byte, 1,000 Mbps is theoretically equivalent to 125 megabytes per second (MB/s) before protocol overhead. That is a conversion, not a promise that a file will download at that rate: network overhead and the performance of every link between your device and the file’s server reduce the actual throughput.

Also check whether the provider’s “1,000 Mbps” figure describes downloads, uploads, or both. Upload capacity matters when sending large files, hosting live video, or handling other upload-heavy work. The FCC discusses uploads in contexts including video calls and live streaming, but its examples do not establish the upload rate of any particular plan. FCC 24-27

What can you do with gigabit internet?
Gigabit service is most useful when multiple people and devices need bandwidth at once, or when a single activity involves transferring a large amount of data. The FCC’s 2023 proceeding discussed an individual 4K video stream as an example requiring 25 Mbps and graphics-intensive telework as an example requiring 45 Mbps or more. Those are illustrative use-case estimates, not universal requirements for every streaming service or work setup. FCC 23-89

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
The same proceeding reported an average of 18.6 connected devices per household in 2021 and 20.2 in the first half of 2022. These are historical figures, not a current estimate for 2026. Connected devices do not all use their maximum bandwidth constantly, so simply adding the peak requirements of every app can overstate what a household needs; the timing and intensity of use matter.
- Several simultaneous activities: video streaming, video calls, online gaming, work, and downloads can share the connection without each activity needing to run alone.
- Large downloads: a faster plan can reduce transfer time when the device, service, and route can supply data quickly enough to use the available capacity.
- Upload-heavy work: check the plan’s upload rate separately rather than assuming it matches the download rate.
More bandwidth does not automatically mean lower latency or more responsive gaming and calls. Latency under load and packet loss are separate performance considerations identified in the FCC’s broadband measurement work. A fast download result alone cannot establish how responsive a connection will feel.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices

- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Why might a device not reach 1,000 Mbps?
The advertised plan rate, the capacity of your wired connection, Wi-Fi throughput, and the speed of an individual app or service are different things. A limitation in any one of them can keep a device’s measured speed below the plan rate.

Router, Ethernet port, and cable
A wired test can help separate an internet-service issue from a Wi-Fi issue, but the router port, computer port, and cable must all support the rate you are trying to measure. Equipment varies by model. Google, for example, documents 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports for certain of its cited devices; that specification should not be assumed for every router. Its guidance also recommends checking whether an Ethernet cable is rated below the expected service speed. Google’s Nest Wifi troubleshooting guidance
Wi-Fi and client devices
Wireless results depend on the device model, distance from the router, walls, radio band, interference, and competing wireless use. A router’s own speed test does not show what every phone, laptop, or other client can achieve. Google notes that device model and version affect speed, and that its router or primary Wi-Fi point test measures the connection at that point—not the result on every connected device. The service you are using
A speed test measures one connection to one endpoint at one time. A particular website, game, download server, or route may be slower than the internet connection available to your home. Results from one test therefore do not guarantee the same throughput for every app.

- Confirm the plan and service status. Check the provider’s plan details for download and upload rates, then look for an outage or ask the ISP about a service issue.
- Run a wired speed test. Connect a capable computer by Ethernet to a gigabit-capable router port and test with competing household traffic reduced. Compare the result with the plan, allowing for overhead and test variation.
- Check the wired link. Verify that the computer and router ports support the intended rate and that the cable is not rated below it. Google advises checking cable rating and Ethernet-port capability for its supported setups; consult the specifications for your own devices.
- Try a second test endpoint. If results differ substantially, the original test server or route may be a factor.
- Test Wi-Fi where you actually use it. Repeat on the relevant phones, laptops, or other devices in the rooms where performance matters. Compare close to the router with more distant locations to identify a wireless coverage or interference issue.
- Contact the ISP before replacing equipment. The FCC advises checking the plan, running a speed test, contacting the provider, and checking router capability when speed is lower than expected. FCC home-network guidance
Do you need a gigabit router or new cable?
Only consider replacing equipment after testing identifies it as a constraint. If the wired path cannot support the plan’s rate, a router, port, or cable that does support the intended speed may address that specific limitation. A gigabit-capable router does not guarantee that every Wi-Fi device will reach 1,000 Mbps: wireless conditions and client hardware still matter. Likewise, replace an Ethernet cable only if its rating or condition is limiting the wired connection.

Is a 1,000 Mbps plan worth it?
It may be worthwhile if several people regularly use bandwidth-intensive services at the same time, if large transfers are a frequent part of work or personal use, or if your current plan struggles under overlapping demand. A household with lighter or mostly non-overlapping use may not notice a proportional everyday improvement. The answer depends on your actual usage and the complete connection—not just the headline download number.
When comparing plans, check the download and upload rates, whether the connection is symmetrical, availability and technology at your address, the price after promotions, installation and equipment charges, contract terms, data policies, and any available evidence about reliability or latency. Also consider whether your router, devices, and internal wiring can use the offered capacity. FCC map listings are provider-reported, so verify details directly with the ISP. The FCC’s earlier discussion also cautioned that there is no single objective standard for HD or the speed needed to achieve it; video quality and service requirements vary. FCC 15-10
