The rating signals insulation efficiency and the potential for less weight or packed volume. Whether it is worth paying attention to depends on how much down the item contains, how it is built, and the conditions you will use it in.
What does fill power measure?
Fill power describes the loft produced by a given quantity of down. REI defines it as the number of cubic inches of loft produced by one ounce of down. In the test described in its guide, a laboratory puts down in a cylinder, places a lightly weighted disk on it, waits one minute, and measures the resulting volume. The figure describes the down material, not the finished garment’s thermal performance. REI’s explanation of fill power

Test methods can differ, so compare claims with their units and test context in mind rather than assuming every rating was measured identically. Allied Feather + Down’s testing-method information
Fill power is not fill weight
Fill power is the loft potential of the down; fill weight is the quantity of down placed in the item. A garment with a high rating but little down may be less warm than one with more down at a lower rating. REI illustrates the distinction with a theoretical comparison: 50 g of 900-fill-power down could provide the same warmth as 100 g of 450-fill-power down, but notes that real products’ distribution and design prevent this from serving as a reliable formula. What does 1,000 fill power mean in practice?
It is a very high fill-power rating, associated with down that can produce substantial loft from a given amount of material. That can make a well-designed item lighter or more compressible for its insulation potential. Allied Feather + Down describes its 1,000-fill-power down as rare and says its supply chain is small and unique. Allied also says it will not sell its material under that rating without a third-party test report showing at least 1,000 fill power. These are statements about Allied’s material and verification practice, not an industry-wide certification rule or proof about other products. Allied Feather + Down on its 1,000-fill-power down
Allied’s theoretical example says half as much 1,000-fill-power down as 500-fill-power down could provide the same warmth. Treat that as an illustration of potential material-level warmth-to-weight efficiency, not a promise that two finished jackets will perform equally. Allied Feather + Down’s fill-power explanation

Does higher fill power make a jacket or sleeping bag warmer?
Not on its own. Higher-fill-power down can loft more and trap warm air efficiently, but the rating does not tell you how much insulation is in the finished product or how effectively it is used. Patagonia puts it this way: “Down fill power isn’t an exact measure of warmth—but a higher down fill rating means the down insulation can better trap in warm air, as fluffier down has higher garment ‘loft’ (or insulating efficiency).” Patagonia’s down guide

For jackets
Warmth depends on the amount and placement of down, as well as the jacket’s baffles, shell material, fit, and ability to limit drafts. Layering, the wearer’s metabolism, and the weather also affect how warm it feels. So a fill-power number alone cannot establish which jacket will keep you warmer. For sleeping bags
Do not use fill power to infer a bag’s comfort temperature. Compare standardized temperature ratings where available, alongside down quantity, construction, total weight, and packed volume. REI notes that ISO temperature ratings provide a more reliable basis for comparing sleeping-bag warmth than fill power alone. REI’s fill-power guide
When is 1,000 fill power worth prioritizing?
- Consider it when low weight and compact packing matter. For backpacking or other trips where carrying space and weight are constrained, high-fill-power down may offer a useful efficiency advantage—provided the item contains enough insulation for the conditions. REI suggests considering 900 fill power for people trying to save weight and space. REI’s guidance on choosing fill power
- It may not matter much for casual use. If extra bulk and weight are acceptable, a more heavily filled item with lower-fill-power down can be a sensible option. REI’s guidance on choosing fill power
- For everyday jackets, judge the whole garment. Patagonia positions its 600- and 700-fill-power recycled-down garments for everyday use and its 800-fill-power garments for technical outdoor use where performance, weight, and compressibility matter. That is Patagonia’s product guidance, not a universal threshold for every brand. Patagonia’s down guide
How to compare down products
- Start with the intended conditions. For a sleeping bag, use its temperature rating as a primary comparison point. For a jacket, there is no warmth answer you can derive from fill power alone.
- Check the fill weight and distribution. Look for how much down is in the product and how it is allocated, not just the fill-power figure.
- Assess construction and fit. Compare baffle design, shell material, room for layers, and draft control.
- Compare total weight and packed size. These are the practical areas where higher fill power can be valuable.
- Look for a clear, substantiated claim. Check the stated unit and test context; ratings may not be directly comparable when test methods differ.
Is 1,000 fill power common?
Allied Feather + Down calls its own 1,000-fill-power material rare, but that does not establish how many products across the market use it. No market-wide count or share is established by the cited sources. Treat a product’s claim as something to verify on its own terms rather than assuming the number is common, standardized across all testing, or independently confirmed.
