Open your browser’s extension manager, review what each add-on can access, then disable or remove anything you do not recognize or trust. A permission such as access to site data can be necessary for an extension’s stated function; it is not proof of malware. If an extension will not go away or returns after removal, check whether the browser is managed by work or school and whether other software is changing its settings.
Before removing an extension: check its purpose and access
Look at the extension’s name, publisher or source, and stated purpose. Compare that purpose with the access it requests. For example, an extension that works with pages may need permission to read or change site data, but broad access is worth questioning if it does not fit what the extension claims to do.

Permissions describe what an extension may be able to do, not what it has actually done. If you are unsure about an add-on, turn it off first and see whether a browser problem stops. If you still do not recognize or trust it, remove it using the browser’s own controls.

-
Use the extension’s own controls to disable or remove it if you do not recognize or trust it. If you are uncertain, disable it before removing it so you can check whether browser behavior changes.

For an extension you intend to keep, review its site access and restrict which sites it can access where the available controls allow. Microsoft documents this separately in its guide to changing extension site-access permissions.
-
Edge may turn off extensions that try to modify browser settings without permission. Microsoft explains this behavior in its extension troubleshooting guidance.
If an extension cannot be removed or returns
A returning extension does not, by itself, reveal why it came back. First check whether the browser or device is managed by an employer or school. If you expect that management, contact the organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass its controls. Google explains how to check whether Chrome is managed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On a personal device, check for managed accounts, programs, or extensions that may be changing browser settings. Google also advises removing software that may be affecting Chrome if an extension remains corrupted after repair. If unwanted changes continue, use the operating system’s trusted security tools or seek qualified support. Avoid registry edits, deleting browser profile files, or running unfamiliar cleanup scripts based only on an extension’s name.
Keep browser protections in perspective
Use browser security warnings, but do not treat them as a guarantee that an installed extension is safe. When browsing, check the address bar before entering sensitive information. Microsoft says Edge SmartScreen can help identify and block malicious downloads; this is an additional protection, not proof that an extension is trustworthy. See Microsoft’s Edge security guidance.
