“10-bit pixel compression” does not name one universal format or process. 10-bit describes the precision of component samples in a particular representation; compression describes how data is encoded to reduce storage, transfer, or memory demands. To know what the phrase means in a specific case, identify the format and the stage of the imaging workflow.
Does “10-bit” mean 10 bits per pixel?
Usually, no. Ten-bit typically refers to the number of meaningful bits available for each component sample—not the total storage used by a pixel. A pixel format also defines such details as color representation, chroma sampling, plane arrangement, and how samples are stored. As a result, neither the byte count per pixel nor a compression ratio can be inferred from “10-bit” alone.

What does P010 mean?
P010 is a concrete example of a 10-bit pixel format, not a compression ratio. Android documents it as a 10-bit-per-component, 4:2:0 YCbCr semiplanar format. Samples use 16-bit storage allocations, with the 10 most significant bits carrying the sample. Because chroma is subsampled horizontally and vertically, the format’s allocated and meaningful bits per pixel are not the same as simply adding three 10-bit components. Android lists 24 allocated bits per pixel and 15 bits of data per pixel for P010. Android’s CodecCapabilities reference identifies P010 as added at API level 33; that is the API constant’s availability label, not a universal adoption date.

Android also documents P210, a 10-bit-per-component, 4:2:2 semiplanar format. It has 32 allocated bits per pixel and 20 bits of data per pixel, and its API constant is listed as added at API level 36. These formats show why a bit-depth label alone does not describe a format’s total storage layout.

Can a 10-bit signal be compressed to 8 bits?
It can be represented that way in a specific format, but that does not make it a general rule for 10-bit pixels. Android documents COLOR_FormatRawBayer8bitcompressed as an SMIA compressed Bayer format: each byte represents a sample from a 10-bit signal, using DPCM/PCM as defined by the SMIA Functional Specification. This describes a particular camera-oriented raw Bayer representation. The format description does not establish that every 10-bit image can be encoded this way or that the conversion is lossless.
Which kind of compression is involved?
The answer depends on where the data is used. A camera sensor’s raw Bayer output, an in-memory video frame, a GPU texture, and a saved image or encoded video are different stages, with different formats and requirements. Khronos’s Data Format Specification v1.4.0 distinguishes texture compression, which is designed for efficient random access during texture sampling, from image compression, which can exploit redundancy across an image. The Khronos specification is relevant when the question concerns GPU texture formats rather than general image or video coding.

Does “10-bit compression” tell you the quality or file size?
No. The phrase alone does not specify an algorithm, bitrate, storage footprint, or whether a transformation is lossless, lossy, reversible, or simply a change in sample representation. Those properties belong to the named format or codec and its settings. Check the documentation for the specific format and workflow before drawing conclusions about quality or size.
What details should you check?
To interpret or compare two formats, look for the properties that define how samples are represented and used:
