Well Dweller is a single-player, dark-fairy-tale Metroidvania starring Glimmer, a small bird wielding a matchstick. It is best described as a solo-led game, not a project made by one person alone: developer Kyle Thompson says he handled the art, code, and design, while his brother Eric composed the music.
What kind of game is Well Dweller?
Glimmer journeys through a decaying kingdom to rescue family members captured under the rule of a wicked queen. The adventure combines exploration, platforming, combat, puzzles, and secrets. As Glimmer gains abilities, previously inaccessible routes open up—and those abilities also change how the bird moves through the world.

Players can find trinkets to upgrade and combine abilities, befriend characters, battle bosses, and uncover illustrated storybook pages. The result is built around exploring an interconnected world rather than simply moving from one fight to the next.
A cute protagonist in a morbid storybook world
Thompson describes a deliberate contrast between playful or cute elements and a dark, sometimes morbid setting. He cites classic fairy tales, Blasphemous, and the graphic novel Beautiful Darkness among his inspirations. He considered a rabbit for the protagonist before choosing a bird, which he felt offered more interesting movement possibilities.

Who made Well Dweller?
Kyle Thompson is the game’s developer, and his role is unusually broad: he says he makes the art, code, and design. His brother Eric makes the music; Thompson says they have worked together since his first game, Sheepo. In a September 17, 2026 interview with 80 Level, Thompson put it plainly: “I make all the art, code, design, etc., and he makes all the music.”
That makes Well Dweller solo-led, but not collaborator-free. Steam lists Kyle Thompson, Top Hat Studios, Inc., and Doyoyo Games in its developer/publisher metadata, with Kyle identified as the developer and all three listed among the publishers.
How the design and development came together
Abilities meant to change movement
Thompson says he designed abilities to remain useful after opening ability gates, by affecting how Glimmer moves. He also aimed for a more interconnected world and characters with meaningful purposes and backstories, drawing on lessons from making Crypt Custodian. These are the developer’s stated design goals, rather than an independent assessment of how fully the game achieves them.

Thompson says he made the game with GameMaker, used Spine for animation, and created art in Photoshop. He describes gameplay design as the hardest part: mechanics have to work together, which takes playtesting and repeated revision. He says the game was playable nearly to the end around halfway through its development timeline, leaving the rest of development for refinement.
One late change concerned Glimmer’s matchstick. Its original behavior extinguished it when Glimmer took damage; Thompson found that approach lopsided and reworked the mechanic. The example illustrates the kind of adjustment he says came from testing how individual systems felt together.

Well Dweller is a fit for players drawn to ability-driven exploration and a storybook aesthetic that mixes charm with darkness. Its central promise is a bird protagonist whose growing abilities affect both access to the map and movement through it. The available information does not establish a dependable difficulty ranking or playtime estimate, so neither should be assumed from the genre or premise.
