At TIME’s Chicago Impact Dinner on October 1, 2026, four speakers urged audiences to center survivors, draw on lived experience, and challenge silence around domestic violence. The Allstate Foundation presented the event, whose theme was “Empowering Survivors: Building Strong Futures Together,” according to AOL’s October 2 recap.

Who spoke at the TIME Impact Dinner?

AOL’s recap names four speakers: photojournalist and activist Donna Ferrato; author and speaker Tommi Vincent, president of family lifestyle brand Vincent Country; her husband Troy Vincent, the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations; and humanitarian, activist, and actor Ashley Judd.

What did the speakers say about supporting survivors?

Donna Ferrato: survivors should lead

Ferrato honored her mother, whom she described as a survivor and an inspiration, and recalled making photographs about domestic violence. She urged people to break silence and argued that survivors should lead the movement: “Survivors are the ones who lead this movement.”

AOL also connects Ferrato’s well-known photograph “Behind Closed Doors” with Elisabeth Lindberg, previously identified publicly under the pseudonym Lisa, and reports that Lindberg later shared her story. The recap quotes Ferrato urging people to “be outspoken” and praise survivors.

Tommi and Troy Vincent: let lived experience shape solutions

Tommi Vincent described herself as a survivor and said her goal was to normalize conversation about abuse, not abusive behavior. As AOL quoted her: “I am a thriving domestic violence survivor on a mission to normalize the conversation, not the behavior.” She also spoke about using her experience, voice, resources, and relationships to help address the issue.

The recap says the couple works with organizations including the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Tommi described a “house” for survivors in which survivors are centered and help shape solutions—a vision of support built with survivors rather than imposed on them.

Ashley Judd: witnesses should speak up

Judd challenged bystander silence and called on witnesses to intervene in support of survivors. She argued that entitlement and silence around abuse can amount to complicity. In AOL’s account, she urged people to become “upstanders,” hold men accountable, and help heal their communities. These are Judd’s arguments as reported in the recap.

What does becoming an “upstander” mean here?

In Judd’s remarks, an upstander is someone who does more than privately disapprove of abuse: a witness speaks up in support of survivors rather than staying silent. The recap presents this as her call to action, not as a detailed guide to responding safely in a particular situation.

What the recap establishes—and what it does not

AOL’s October 2, 2026 report establishes the event’s date, theme, presenter, speakers, and the central messages attributed to them. It does not provide a named statistic about domestic violence or survivor outcomes. It is not an event transcript, so anyone relying on exact quotation wording should check against a recording or transcript if one is available.

AOL’s article also lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline as a resource, gives 1-800-799-SAFE, and says the service is available 24/7. Confirm current contact details and availability directly with the hotline before relying on them.
