Those are local survey results, not a national average or a guarantee that every item costs less at Wegmans.
The better choice depends on your nearby stores and what matters in your cart: everyday prices, produce and meat, Whole Foods’ published product standards, prepared foods, or online convenience. Here’s how to compare them without treating one regional basket as a universal verdict.

Is Wegmans cheaper than Whole Foods?
The available price evidence favors Wegmans on the baskets surveyed, but the size of the difference varied by region. Consumers’ Checkbook reported these results in its 2025 regional comparisons, updated in November 2025:

These figures compare baskets in separate regional studies, not one nationally matched basket using a common set of stores. They show a consistent direction in those markets, but not that every product, sale, department, or online order will follow the same pattern.

What the basket results can—and cannot—tell you
A survey basket is a useful starting point for comparing overall price levels. Your result can differ if you buy different brands, shop promotions, favor particular departments, or use online ordering. For a personal comparison, list the items you buy repeatedly and compare the same sizes and brands at stores you can actually reach.
Which store has better produce, meat and product standards?
“Better” depends on whether you mean shopper ratings, selection, or a defined sourcing standard. The available evidence supports specific observations, not a single winner across every category.
Produce and meat
In its 2025 Washington-area survey, Consumers’ Checkbook reported that 87% of Wegmans customers rated the chain’s overall quality “superior,” and 85% rated its produce “superior.” These are local survey results, not national customer ratings. In Boston and the Delaware Valley, Consumers’ Checkbook said Whole Foods continued to receive high marks in consumer surveys for produce and meat quality.

The Washington-area report also said Whole Foods’ overall-quality score had fallen from above 90% to 65%. That result belongs to the publication’s local survey and should not be read as a national measure or a direct head-to-head product audit.
Whole Foods’ published standards and 365 brand
Whole Foods says its food standards exclude high-fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and hydrogenated fats, and prohibit more than 100 preservatives, flavors, colors, and other ingredients. The company also says it sells only sustainable wild-caught and Responsibly Farmed seafood, does not sell “red-rated” seafood, and prohibits antibiotics in raising animals for products in its meat department. These are Whole Foods’ descriptions of its own policies, not an independent comparison with Wegmans. Details are on Whole Foods’ quality standards page.
Whole Foods identifies milk, cheese, butter, and yogurt sold under its 365 Everyday Value brand as made with milk from animals not given synthetic growth hormones. That makes 365 a concrete store-brand option for those dairy staples; it does not establish that a particular 365 item is cheaper or better than a Wegmans equivalent.

How to compare selection for your needs
The available sources do not provide current, comparable counts of items, brands, or matched assortments at the two chains. Rather than assume one has categorically more choice, check the departments that matter to you:

How to compare your own grocery bill
Use stores near you and your actual routine purchases. A short list of repeat items is more informative for your household than applying another region’s percentage to your whole grocery budget.
- Check that both stores serve your area. Search your ZIP code in each retailer’s current store locator; the chains do not necessarily compete in every market.
- Build a repeat-purchase list. Include your usual produce, meat, pantry staples, dairy, store-brand items, and prepared foods rather than selecting only unusually cheap or expensive products.
- Match the products carefully. Compare the same brand, package size, and product type. Where you would accept a substitute, note that it is not an exact match.
- Account for promotions and shopping method. Record the price you can actually get, and include online markups, fees, and any delivery tip when applicable.
- Compare the total over several trips. Rechecking at the cadence you shop helps avoid basing a decision on a one-time promotion or a single unusual purchase.
Which chain is easier to shop online?
Wegmans offers pickup and delivery through its website or app, with online grocery service partnered with Instacart. The retailer says Wegmans employees shop all pickup orders and that delivery can arrive within hours. Actual availability, delivery windows, and charges depend on location.

Wegmans says online grocery prices are about 15% above in-store prices, including the cost of shopping the order. Its FAQ states a $10 minimum order; pickup has no extra delivery fee, service charge, or tip. Delivery may add delivery, bag, heavy-order, or long-distance fees, and some prepared-food and special-order items are unavailable online.

The available information does not establish current Whole Foods delivery fees or a matched online-cart comparison between the chains. For Wegmans, pickup avoids the stated delivery fee and tip, but it does not remove the retailer’s stated online item-price markup.

Where are Wegmans and Whole Foods available?
Wegmans’ store locator says the chain has more than one hundred stores across nine states—Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia—and Washington, D.C. The available sources do not provide a directly comparable Whole Foods store-count figure. Check the retailers’ locators for your ZIP code rather than assuming both operate nearby.
Use Wegmans’ store locator to check its locations. Store distance and format can matter as much as shelf prices if one option adds a longer trip or lacks the departments and services you use.
Which one should you choose?
Wegmans is the stronger starting point if your main concern is the overall price level: all three cited regional basket comparisons found it less expensive than Whole Foods, though the observed gaps differed substantially. Whole Foods may suit shoppers who place particular value on its published ingredient, seafood, meat, and dairy policies, or who prefer its produce, meat, or prepared-food offerings. The evidence does not establish a universal winner for selection or quality.
For a decision that reflects your household, compare your regular basket at nearby locations, then weigh the result against your quality priorities, desired products, travel time, and ordering costs.
