Answer retail application questions with your real schedule, specific examples of relevant experience, and references who have agreed to speak for you. Requirements differ by employer, so use the job posting and application form—not another retailer’s process—as the authority.
What should I put for availability on a job application?
Read the job posting, then give the days and times you can reliably work. State your earliest start time, latest end time, and any fixed limits, such as classes, caregiving, or another job. Employers may ask about schedule availability and restrictions, but the Texas Workforce Commission’s application guidance is Texas-specific and does not establish a nationwide form or required schedule (Texas Workforce Commission: Job Applications).

Be clear about flexibility without promising more than you can deliver. For example, if it matches your actual schedule, you could write: “Available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after 3 p.m.; available all day Saturday and Sunday. I can discuss additional shifts with advance notice.” Change the days and times to reflect your own availability.
What do I write for experience if I have no retail experience?
Say plainly that you have not worked in retail, if asked, and then describe relevant experience you do have. Employers may ask about work history; accurate details about duties and skills are more useful than implying you held a retail job you did not. The federal applicant guide discusses employment history and background information, while the Texas Workforce Commission guide describes possible application questions (EEOC and FTC: Background Checks: What Job Applicants and Employees Should Know; Texas Workforce Commission: Job Applications).

If you have retail experience
Name the duties you actually performed—such as helping customers, stocking, handling cash, merchandising, or fulfilling orders—and give a concrete example where useful. Leave out duties you did not perform and metrics you cannot support.
If you are new to retail
Look for relevant examples from food service, school activities, caregiving, volunteering, or other work. Explain what you did and what skill it demonstrates: for instance, resolving a customer’s problem, organizing supplies, following a schedule, or coordinating with a team. These are ways to describe your background, not a guaranteed hiring formula.

Who can I use as a reference?
Choose someone who knows your work, abilities, education, or skills and is willing to be contacted. Depending on the application’s instructions and the person’s knowledge of your work, possibilities may include a former supervisor or colleague, teacher, coach, or volunteer coordinator. The Department of Labor’s employment workshop guide says references can comment on work experience, abilities, education, skills, and personality; it recommends sharing a recent résumé and the job announcement so they understand the opportunity (U.S. Department of Labor: Employment Workshop Participant Guide 6.0).

- Ask the person’s permission before listing them.
- Confirm the name, preferred contact details, and how they would like to be reached.
- Share your recent résumé and the job announcement, as the Department of Labor guide recommends.
- Follow the form’s instructions about reference type and contact information.
Do I need references for a retail job?
Follow the specific application. The sources cited here do not establish one universal reference requirement or number for retail jobs. An employer may ask for references, request them later, or specify particular kinds of contacts; do not assume another company’s process applies to this one. If the form does not make the requirement clear, ask the employer what it wants rather than inventing a number.

Can an employer check my work history?
In the United States, employers may ask applicants about background information such as employment history, subject to federal nondiscrimination requirements and protections for medical and genetic information. The EEOC and FTC applicant guide explains these principles; state and local rules may add requirements (EEOC and FTC: Background Checks: What Job Applicants and Employees Should Know).
If a reporting company provides a background report
When an employer obtains a background report from a company that compiles such information, federal procedures generally require a written disclosure and your written permission. If the employer may take adverse action based on the report, federal rules require additional notices and steps. The FTC explains applicant rights, while the joint EEOC/FTC employer guide describes employer procedures (FTC: Employer Background Checks and Your Rights; EEOC and FTC: Background Checks: What Employers Need to Know). An applicant can decline permission, but the employer may then reject the application.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Federal law also restricts discriminatory hiring practices. The EEOC says it is illegal for an employer to give a negative or false employment reference—or refuse to give one—because of a protected characteristic (EEOC: Prohibited Employment Policies/Practices). This is a general U.S. overview, not advice about an individual dispute; check current official state or local guidance for rules where you live.

- Which reference types and contact details the form requests.
- Whether a separate background-report disclosure and authorization is presented.
Schedule and application-question examples in the Texas Workforce Commission guide apply to Texas; reference preparation guidance comes from the Department of Labor; background-report disclosure and authorization are covered by the EEOC/FTC guides.
