If you suspect someone has taken control of your domain, contact the sponsoring or previous registrar immediately, secure the registrar and recovery-email accounts, and preserve records. A website outage alone does not prove hijacking: first verify the domain’s registration, contact details, nameservers, and account activity with your registrar.

What domain hijacking means—and what it does not

ICANN’s Security and Stability Advisory Committee defines domain hijacking as “the wrongful taking of control of a domain name from the rightful name holder” in its SAC 007 report. The phrase can cover several different events: a compromised registrar account, unauthorized changes to registration contacts, an unauthorized transfer, or malicious changes to DNS settings.

These events can look different. An attacker may change nameservers or DNS records so the domain points to infrastructure they control, or alter registration contact information so they can control domains in a compromised account. ICANN’s recovery guidance describes both patterns.

Not every outage or unexpected redirect means the registered domain has been stolen. Expiration, suspension, a hosting failure, DNS misconfiguration, and DNS tampering are distinct possibilities. A subdomain can also be vulnerable to takeover if its DNS record points to a deprovisioned service; that does not necessarily mean anyone controls the registered parent domain. CISA describes this separate technique in its Domains technique guidance.

What warning signs should I investigate?

These symptoms warrant prompt verification, but any one can have a non-malicious explanation:

  • You suddenly cannot access the registrar account, or receive password-reset or recovery messages you did not request.
  • Registrant, registration-contact, billing, or account-recovery details have changed unexpectedly.
  • The domain disappears from the account where you normally manage it, or an unfamiliar registrar or transfer appears.
  • Nameservers or DNS records change without authorization; the website or email stops resolving, redirects, or points to unfamiliar infrastructure.
  • Customers report suspicious redirects, unexpected sign-in pages, or messages that appear to come from your domain.

Check the domain’s registration status, registrar, contacts, nameservers, and recent account activity directly with the registrar and your DNS or hosting provider. Do not rely only on a site being unavailable or on links in an unexpected message.

What can a hijacked domain put at risk?

Loss of domain control can interrupt a website and email, enable malicious redirection or phishing, and expose visitors to traffic inspection. It can also damage the owner’s identity, brand, and reputation. ICANN’s SSAC notes that customers, business partners, consumers, and other unrelated parties may become collateral victims. That report dates to 2005, so it supports these general risk mechanisms, not a claim about present-day prevalence; no current prevalence figure is established here.

What should I do first?

  1. Contact the sponsoring or previous registrar immediately. Use a known support route or a current registrar listing. Say whether you suspect an account takeover, unauthorized contact change, or transfer, and request escalation and preservation of account and transfer records. ICANN’s lost-domain guidance says: “You should contact the previous registrar immediately and request that it review the unauthorized transfer claim.”
  2. Secure the accounts that can control or recover the domain. From a trusted device, change compromised passwords for the registrar and the email account used for recovery. Use unique credentials, enable MFA if available, revoke unknown sessions or API access if the service offers those controls, and restrict access to authorized administrators.
  3. Ask for a focused review and urgent options. Ask the registrar to check account activity, transfer authorization, contact changes, and DNS or nameserver changes. If the domain moved between registrars, request the authorization documentation and ask what restoration process applies. ICANN’s transfer guidance says the registrar that received a transfer must be able to produce required authorization documentation when requested.
  4. Preserve evidence before records disappear. Save historical registration details, invoices and receipts, renewal notices, registrar correspondence, DNS-change notifications, relevant logs, screenshots, and archived site materials. Keep originals and timestamps where possible; record dates, ticket numbers, and whom you contacted. Do not alter logs or send passwords or other sensitive credentials through ordinary email.
  5. Coordinate restoration across the domain and its services. Work with the registrar and DNS or hosting provider to restore authorized registration details and DNS configuration. Verify mail records and certificates, and monitor for further changes.
  6. Escalate if the registrar cannot resolve the issue. Use the applicable ICANN complaint route for an unauthorized transfer or other relevant dispute, and ask the registrar which process applies. ICANN’s role is contractual: it cannot directly transfer a name back to you. Legal options depend on the facts and jurisdiction.

There is no general recovery deadline or guaranteed outcome established by these sources. The facts, registrar, transfer chain, available evidence, and applicable process affect what can happen.

What proof should I collect?

The most useful material can show that you or your organization controlled or used the domain before the incident, as ICANN Security Team member Dave Piscitello explains in the recovery article. Collect what is available, without altering originals:

  • Historical registration records identifying you or your organization as the registrant.
  • Registrar invoices, renewal receipts, payment records, and other transactions linked to the domain.
  • Registrar emails, including annual registration-data reminders, renewal notices, DNS-change alerts, and support correspondence.
  • System or web logs, archived pages, and other records associating the domain with your published content.
  • Marketing materials, directories, or business records connecting the domain to your organization.

Keep copies in a secure location and note when and how each item was obtained. Preserve relevant logs promptly, since providers may not retain them indefinitely.

Can ICANN get my domain back?

No. ICANN states in its lost-domain guidance: “ICANN does not have the ability or authority to transfer or return a domain name to anyone.” Start with the sponsoring or previous registrar, which can investigate the account or transfer and explain the procedure available for the specific case. ICANN can address certain registrar obligations through its contractual processes, but that is not the same as directly restoring a domain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ICANN’s guidance also describes a 15-day period in a specific WHOIS-data accuracy situation: when a registrant does not respond to an inquiry, a registrar must take specified actions that may include suspension, termination, or locking pending verification. This is not a deadline for hijacking recovery.

How can I reduce the risk of another loss of control?

  • Protect registrar access: use a unique, strong password stored in a reputable password manager, and enable MFA if supported. Use HTTPS when signing in to registrar services.
  • Keep recovery details current and monitored: maintain accurate registrar and recovery contacts. Consider using a registrar-account email separate from the public registration-contact email, so a change to registration details is less likely to remove an independent recovery or evidence channel.
  • Limit account access: give access only to authorized administrators, and keep the account recoverable through contact details you control.
  • Ask about transfer locks: a registrar lock can add friction to transfers or deletions, but it is not a guarantee and the way it works or is removed varies by registrar.
  • Consider DNSSEC where supported: correctly configured DNSSEC lets clients validate signed DNS data and helps reduce the chance of accepting substituted DNS answers. It does not prevent registrar-account takeover or prove who owns a domain.
  • Prepare before an incident: keep an offline copy of registration and billing evidence and a list of registrar, DNS, and hosting support contacts.

When comparing registrars, look at supported MFA methods, lock behavior and removal controls, recovery procedures, emergency support, audit history, and how clearly the provider handles transfer authorization. These features can improve account security or incident handling; none guarantees recovery.
