There is no evidence-backed color that is best for every website or that reliably earns the most clicks. The strongest current finding is about accessibility: WebAIM’s 2026 automated analysis detected low-contrast text on 83.9% of the top one million home pages it evaluated. Choose a palette that suits your brand and audience, then check the contrast of the actual text and interface colors people will see.
What the 2026 website color statistics show
WebAIM’s 2026 analysis evaluated the home pages of the top one million websites using its WAVE stand-alone API. It found detected low-contrast text on 83.9% of pages, compared with 79.1% in WebAIM’s 2025 analysis. The 2026 report also found an average of 34 distinct low-contrast text instances per home page.

WebAIM detected at least one WCAG failure on 95.9% of the home pages. These are results from automated checks of failures that can be detected automatically, not a complete manual audit of every page or proof that each site violates every WCAG requirement. The year-to-year figures also do not establish why the rate changed. See WebAIM’s Million report.
Is there a best color for a website?
No single background, brand, or button color is established as best for every website. Color choices depend on the site’s identity, audience, content, and context. A palette that suits one business may be a poor fit for another, and a hue alone cannot guarantee attention, clicks, or conversions.
#1 Best Overall
- REAL CMYK - Design Swatch is a realistic representation of straight CMYK industrial printing. With Design Swatch, you'll know what to expect when using a certain color from the deck.
- DESIGN-FOCUSED - Instead of filling up the deck with nonsense colors or colors that Graphic Designers or Small Business owners will never use, we filled up our deck with design-focused colors. 300 CMYK colors, all of which are perfectly usable in design.
- PRINT-READY ACCURACY – Every swatch is tested against real-world CMYK printers, so what you see in the deck is what you'll get on paper.
- COST-EFFICIENT – Professional color tools are often overpriced. Design Swatch delivers premium quality at a fraction of the cost—perfect for freelancers and growing brands.
- CMYK TO HEX - With Design Swatch, you can convert CMYK to Hex (and vice versa) easily and effortlessly by using the Hex codes on each card. It also doubles as a color palette planner for your design or web project.
Color-psychology associations and claims that a particular button color wins are not universal rules. If you are considering a convention or a color variation, treat it as a design hypothesis to test with your own audience and goals—not a promise of results.
How to choose a website palette that people can use
Start with brand and audience fit
Select colors that support the site’s identity and work for the people it serves. Consider where the site will be used, including whether visitors may view it in varying lighting conditions. The W3C notes that sufficient contrast can help make content readable in different lighting.

Check the real color combinations
Contrast depends on the foreground and background together, not on a color in isolation. Check actual combinations used for body text, headings, links, buttons, icons, and other information-bearing interface elements while designing the palette. W3C’s guidance recommends selecting and checking combinations as part of the design process; see W3C WAI’s contrast guidance.
For WCAG AA text contrast, MDN summarizes the minimum ratios as 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text. In this guidance, large text means at least 18pt, or at least 14pt bold. Consult MDN’s color-contrast guidance when checking the relevant text pairs.

Never make color the only signal
Do not rely on hue alone to indicate an error, a required field, a status, or an available action. Add another cue, such as a clear text label, an icon, a shape, or a pattern. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.1 says color must not be the only visual means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing an element. Read the W3C explanation of Use of Color.
Use checkers as a design aid, not a compliance verdict
A contrast checker can help assess a particular foreground and background pair. It cannot establish that a whole website conforms to WCAG: it does not replace checking other accessibility requirements or testing the complete experience. WebAIM’s own top-million analysis is limited to automatically detectable findings.

Should you use dark mode on your website?
The available statistics do not establish that dark mode is better than a light theme, or that either produces more clicks. Choose the presentation that suits the site and its audience, then check contrast for the text and interface elements in the theme you provide. If you offer both themes, check each set of color pairs and ensure that status and actions remain understandable without color perception.

What to check before publishing
- Does the palette fit the site’s brand, audience, and use context?
- Have you checked the contrast of actual text/background pairs against the relevant thresholds?
- Are links, buttons, icons, and other meaningful interface elements legible?
- Can visitors identify errors, required fields, statuses, and actions without relying on color alone?
- If the site has light and dark themes, have you checked both?
