Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most small businesses that want a professional website with minimal technical upkeep, a hosted website builder is the simpler starting point. Self-hosted WordPress is a stronger fit when control, custom features, or extensibility matter enough to justify choosing and maintaining hosting and add-ons. If the website’s main job is selling online, include a commerce-first option such as Shopify in the comparison.
One distinction matters throughout: WordPress.org is software you install through a web host; WordPress.com is a managed service with its own plans. They are not interchangeable, and a comparison with WordPress.com does not automatically describe self-hosted WordPress.

What “WordPress” means in this comparison
Self-hosted WordPress.org is website software. The business chooses a host, installs WordPress—many hosts offer one-click installers—and selects any themes, plugins, or paid services it needs. WordPress.org says the software can be used commercially without a software licensing fee and emphasizes owner control of site content and data. That does not make a complete hosted website free: hosting, paid extensions, and maintenance may add costs. WordPress.org’s Features page states, “Own your data, all of it — your website, your content, your data.”
WordPress.com is a managed service with plans that bundle platform services differently. The Squarespace comparison discussed below compares Squarespace with WordPress.com, not with every self-hosted WordPress setup. Keep that scope in mind when interpreting its price and feature claims. How the options compare for a small business
| Priority | Hosted builder, such as Squarespace | Self-hosted WordPress.org | Shopify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup and upkeep | Squarespace describes its subscription as including hosting and security alongside a visual editor; exact inclusions depend on plan. | The owner chooses hosting and extensions and remains responsible for site management. One-click installation may simplify initial setup but does not remove ongoing responsibilities. | Shopify describes its store builder as including hosting and security, with visual editing. |
| Customization | Templates and integrations cover common needs; verify that the selected plan and extensions include required features. | Themes, plugins, and code offer a flexible path for custom structures and features. The owner must assess compatibility and upkeep. | Themes and apps extend store-related functionality; the platform is oriented toward businesses running online stores. |
| Business tools | Squarespace lists selling, appointments, invoicing, point of sale, marketing, and analytics; access can depend on plan. | Features are assembled from core functions, themes, plugins, and integrations. | Shopify centers on product catalogs, checkout, shipping, inventory tools, and apps; confirm plan-level availability. |
| Cost structure | A subscription bundles some infrastructure. Compare the required tier, billing terms, and any transaction or add-on costs. | The software has no licensing fee, but hosting and optional paid services affect the total. | A subscription service; compare its current plan, payment costs, and relevant apps against store needs. |
| Likely fit | A business seeking a low-friction site, with integrated design or routine service and selling tools. | A business needing more control or custom features, with someone available to handle operations. | A business whose website is primarily an online store. |

Choose based on the work the site needs to do
Choose a hosted builder for a straightforward business site
A hosted builder reduces the number of separate setup decisions: the platform supplies the editor and, in Squarespace’s description, hosting and security through its subscription. That can suit a service business that needs pages, contact or booking tools, and routine selling features without assembling a stack of separate services. Check the precise plan before relying on a particular tool, since feature access varies.

Choose self-hosted WordPress for control and extensibility
WordPress.org is worth considering when the site needs a particular content structure, custom functionality, or room to choose and combine themes and plugins. That flexibility comes with decisions about the host and extensions, plus responsibility for keeping the site working. It is a better fit when the business—or a developer it can rely on—can own that operational work.
Consider Shopify when the site is fundamentally a store
Shopify positions its builder around online stores, with checkout, product and inventory functions, shipping tools, themes, SEO tools, hosting, security, and an app store described on its product page. For a business whose core requirement is ecommerce operations, compare Shopify directly with the ecommerce-capable plans of a general builder or a WordPress setup. Do not assume every listed feature is included at every plan level.

Compare real costs, not headline starting prices
On October 3, 2026, Squarespace’s vendor-authored comparison listed Squarespace plans starting at $19 per month and WordPress subscriptions starting at $0 per month. The WordPress figure refers to WordPress.com, not the operating cost of self-hosted WordPress.org. The same comparison says the lowest WordPress.com plans lack ecommerce, live support, plugin access, and full design customization. These are vendor-stated entry prices, not equivalent plan quotes or a neutral total-cost study. See the Squarespace comparison and FAQ.
There is no established like-for-like lifecycle cost for these options. To estimate your own, define the site scope first, then price plans and extras for the same market and billing period. Include:

- The exact features the business needs and which plan unlocks them.
- Monthly versus annual billing and renewal terms.
- Currency and region, plus domain charges.
- Hosting, paid themes or plugins, maintenance, and outside help for self-hosted WordPress.
- Payment or transaction charges and any paid apps or integrations for a store.
Plan for switching before choosing
Moving later is possible, but a platform switch should not be treated as a guaranteed one-click recreation. WordPress.org lists importers for several platforms, while Squarespace provides domain-transfer information and a WordPress migration guide. Those resources do not establish that every layout, plugin, integration, or commerce workflow will transfer unchanged. Before committing, identify what must remain portable—such as domain ownership, content, product data, and customer processes—and check the relevant export and import paths for your exact setup. Quick Recap

Make the decision
- Pick a hosted builder if ease of setup and reduced platform administration are more important than control over the underlying stack.
- Pick self-hosted WordPress.org if you need extensibility or ownership of a more customized site and have a plan for hosting, updates, and maintenance.
- Compare Shopify as well if the website’s central purpose is running an online store.
