The distinction is about the job the page needs to do, not a strict technical boundary: some platforms support both, and a business may use both a broader website and campaign-specific landing pages.
What is the difference between a website and a landing page?
| Consideration | Website builder | Landing page builder |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Build an ongoing online presence for a brand, service, or body of information. | Create a focused page for a particular campaign outcome, such as a sign-up or product inquiry. |
| Typical structure | Multiple connected pages, often with persistent navigation that helps visitors explore. | One or more focused pages, often with minimal or no navigation to limit distractions. |
| Best fit | Visitors who need to learn about the organization, compare services, or find continuing information. | Visitors arriving from a particular campaign who are being asked to take a defined action. |
| What to assess | Page structure, navigation, and capacity for the ongoing content and information the organization needs. | Campaign templates, forms or lead workflows, page duplication, integrations, and any needed testing or optimization functions. |
These are common patterns, not rules. A website can contain a campaign page, and a landing-page platform may support broader multi-page experiences. The practical question is whether the project needs a browsable, continuing presence, a page centered on one campaign action, or both.
When should you choose a website builder?
Choose a website builder when the work is to create or maintain the broader destination for an organization: visitors should be able to navigate between information, services, and other pages over time. A multi-page structure is useful when the content has several related topics rather than one immediate campaign goal.
- Use the site as the stable destination for brand and service information.
- Organize pages so visitors can explore instead of funneling everyone toward a single action.
- Consider whether the builder can also create campaign pages, so you are not assuming a separate product is necessary.
For example, Wix documents a landing-page builder and templates for app and product landing pages within its own service documentation: Wix Help Center: About the Landing Page Builder. That shows that website-building and landing-page capabilities can coexist; it does not establish that every builder or plan includes the same functions.

When should you choose a landing page builder?
Choose a landing page builder when a specific campaign needs a focused destination and a clear next step. A page with little or no navigation can keep attention on that step, while campaign-focused workflows may help teams produce and manage variations. Whether those workflows matter depends on the campaign and the features available to your account.
- Check that the templates suit the campaign and the device or audience it targets.
- Confirm how forms, lead capture, and integrations fit the workflow after a visitor submits information.
- Look for page duplication if you need to create related campaign pages efficiently.
- If you plan to compare versions or optimize pages, verify that the specific experimentation features you need are included.
Instapage describes templates, collaboration, and experimentation-oriented capabilities on its landing pages feature page. Unbounce describes building, experimenting with, and optimizing landing pages, including a Script Manager for applying scripts across pages, on its features page. These are vendor descriptions of product capabilities, not independent evidence that using the tools improves conversion outcomes.

Can you use a website builder to create a landing page?
Often, yes. Some website platforms offer landing-page features, so a separate specialist builder may not be necessary for a straightforward campaign page. For instance, Squarespace documents using certain page types to create a landing page and says a paid site is needed for the documented feature: Squarespace Help Center: Creating a landing page. Check the current account and plan requirements before relying on that feature.
Compare what the intended campaign actually requires. A simple page and form may fit an existing site builder; a campaign with multiple variants, collaboration needs, or a particular testing workflow may call for more specialized functionality. The existence of a feature does not guarantee it is available on every plan or suitable for every workflow.

Can a landing page builder also support a website?
Some can. Instapage’s help center describes both standalone landing pages and multi-page website experiences in From One Page to Many: Building Your Website. That overlap means the label alone is not enough to decide: assess the actual structure, publishing scope, and campaign capabilities you need.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you use both?
Use both when the jobs are distinct: a broader website can hold the continuing brand and service information, while campaign-specific pages provide focused destinations for particular promotions or lead-generation efforts. Instapage explicitly recommends that many businesses benefit from both approaches in its comparison of landing pages and websites. The recommendation is not universal; avoid maintaining two systems if the campaign needs can be met effectively by the existing site platform.

How to compare platforms before choosing
- Define the visitor’s task. Decide whether visitors need to explore the organization or complete one campaign action.
- Set the publishing scope. List the connected pages and continuing content required, along with any campaign pages. Check whether one platform can serve both roles.
- Map the campaign workflow. Identify needed templates, forms, lead handling, duplication, and integrations; confirm each feature for the intended plan.
- Decide whether testing is necessary. If experimentation or optimization tools are part of the workflow, verify the exact capabilities rather than assuming all landing page builders provide the same ones.
- Compare current plans directly. Check current plan details and restrictions with each provider. The available information does not establish a reliable side-by-side price comparison or which service is best value.
Feature descriptions from Wix, Instapage, Unbounce, and Squarespace are published by the providers themselves. They establish what each provider documents, not independent product-test results or comparative conversion performance.
