Dating apps use recommendation systems to filter and order profiles they think may be relevant to you. They can draw on your settings, profile details, activity, and past interactions, but they do not decide whom you like—and a recommendation is not a guarantee of compatibility or a successful relationship.
What does a dating app matching algorithm do?
At a high level, a matching algorithm helps decide which profiles to show and in what order. It is useful to think of the process as a sequence, not a single score that determines your romantic future:
- Apply your settings. Age, distance, gender preferences, and other discovery controls can limit which profiles are eligible to appear.
- Estimate relevance. The app may use profile information and signals such as activity, likes, skips, or previous matches to tailor recommendations. The signals vary by service.
- Present profiles. The system may order a feed or assemble a curated group. A recommendation is an invitation to consider someone, not a decision made on your behalf.
- Use interactions as feedback. Likes, skips, matches, and other interactions can influence later recommendations where an app says it uses them.
This is a plain-language model of recommendation, not a description reverse-engineered from any company’s production code. The companies disclose some inputs, but not complete formulas or the relative weight of each factor.
Dating recommendations are also different from recommendations for a film or product: another person has preferences and agency too. The 2015 paper Reciprocal Recommendation System for Online Dating frames the task as finding candidates who fit a user’s interests and are also likely to reciprocate contact. In many swipe-based apps, both people need to express interest before a match or conversation can begin, although interaction rules differ across dating products.

What do Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble say they use?
The table summarizes each service’s public disclosures; it does not establish that their systems use the same method or produce comparable results.

How does the Tinder algorithm work? Does Tinder still use Elo?
As of its Help Center explanation updated September 1, 2026, Tinder says, “We prioritize potential matches who are active, and active at the same time.” The company says it has moved on from the old Elo score and now dynamically considers engagement and profile information. That makes “Tinder ranks everyone with an Elo score” an outdated description of Tinder’s current stated approach; Tinder has not published a complete formula or weights.

Tinder also describes a separate optional AI-powered matching feature. Its April 3, 2025 Help Center page says it uses profile information, answers to questions, and activity to generate personalized Daily Drop recommendations. If a user opts in, it can also use tags from camera-roll photos. Tinder says the feature is rolling out in select markets, not universally, and that users can review or delete insights.
How does Hinge decide who to show you?
Hinge’s disclosure describes information members provide directly or through using the service. Along with basic details and preferences, it names likes, skips, matches, and exchanged phone numbers as examples of information used in profiling. Hinge says the same process is used to recommend a member to other users. Its public disclosure does not reveal the underlying ranking formula, so it is not possible to infer exactly why one particular profile appears ahead of another.

What does Bumble use to recommend profiles?
Bumble’s Australia privacy policy identifies profile information, app activity, photo verification, and device coordinates as inputs to compatibility recommendations. Separately, Bumble’s Discover guidance, updated March 31, 2026, describes a daily selection based on similar interests, dating goals, and communities. It says four people may be highlighted as “Recommended for you,” based on profile information and whom the member matched with before. Those details explain the named Discover feature; they should not be treated as a complete account of Bumble’s ranking across the app.

A recommendation can help organize discovery or estimate the chance of an interaction. It cannot certify that two people will connect in person or have a lasting relationship. The 2022 Harvard Data Science Review article Finding Love on a First Data: Matching Algorithms in Online Dating notes that most commercial matching systems are proprietary and that researchers are skeptical that algorithms can predict long-term relationship success. It discusses a 2017 study in which a machine-learning model offered some indication of selectivity and desirability, but could not anticipate which people would connect in person.

The same review raises a broader fairness concern: systems trained on past behavior may reinforce gender or racial biases or narrow who gets exposure by favoring majority patterns. That is a risk identified in research, not proof of a quantified bias in any particular app. Tinder separately says its algorithm does not track social status, religion, or ethnicity; that is Tinder’s own statement, not an independent finding about its system.
There is no directly comparable, current measure in the cited sources showing that Tinder, Hinge, or Bumble has the most accurate recommendations or produces the most successful relationships. Match counts or anecdotes cannot establish that kind of ranking.
