WebRTC Works on Your Laptop—What Breaks When You Deploy It on a Server?

A WebRTC call that works locally may fail across production networks. Understand signaling, ICE, TURN, secure-context requirements and a practical debugging sequence.

A WebRTC demo working on your laptop proves that the browser, permissions and networks you tested found a usable route for that call. It does not prove that users on different networks can connect in production. Deployment adds reachable signaling and, for some network paths, a correctly configured TURN relay; camera and microphone access also have separate browser security and permission requirements.

Which parts of a WebRTC call actually run on the server?

In a common browser-to-browser call, media can flow directly between the peers. That does not make setup serverless: the application needs a way for the browsers to exchange connection information, and ICE needs candidate paths it can test. A signaling server can route setup messages without carrying the audio or video.

Component What it does Does it carry the call’s media?
Signaling service Routes session descriptions and ICE candidates between the intended peers. The application chooses the signaling transport, such as WebSocket or fetch. Not by default; it coordinates setup.
STUN Can help a browser discover a server-reflexive address to use as an ICE candidate. No; discovering an address does not relay media.
ICE Collects and tests candidate paths to find a usable connection between peers. It selects a path; it is not itself a relay.
TURN Provides a relay address and forwards traffic when a direct path cannot be established. Yes, when the selected path is relayed.

These roles matter when diagnosing failure: a healthy signaling connection cannot make an unreachable media path work, and a TURN service does not replace the application’s signaling exchange.

Why does a call that works locally fail across real networks?

The tested networks may have allowed a direct route

A laptop demo usually represents only a particular browser, permission state and pair of network conditions. Production peers may sit behind independent NATs, corporate firewalls, carrier networks or cloud network controls. STUN can help with candidate discovery, but it cannot guarantee that every NAT or firewall permits a direct route.

TURN is the fallback when ICE cannot establish a direct connection. RFC 8835, the IETF’s Transports for WebRTC specification, says: “In order to deal with situations where both parties are behind NATs of the type that perform endpoint-dependent mapping (as defined in [RFC5128], Section 2.4), TURN [RFC8656] MUST be supported.” That requirement is about implementation support; it does not mean every call uses TURN.

Setup messages may not reach the right peer

The signaling service must deliver the offer, answer and any trickled ICE candidates to the intended peer, in the order required by the application’s protocol. WebRTC does not prescribe a signaling transport. A signaling bug can prevent setup even when a relay is healthy; conversely, successful message delivery does not prove that a media route is reachable.

Camera and microphone access can fail before connectivity is tested

MDN documents that getUserMedia() requires a secure context and user permission. If the deployed page is not in a secure context, or a user denies access, capture can fail before ICE connectivity becomes relevant. Treat that as a browser-access problem, not evidence that TURN is broken.

What must be configured for a production deployment?

Make signaling reachable and correctly routed

Deploy the application’s signaling endpoint where both peers can reach it. Verify that the application associates each offer, answer and candidate with the correct call and recipient, and that its handling of candidate ordering matches its protocol. Signaling routes setup information; it does not open firewall paths for media.

Give the browser working ICE server settings

Configure the peer connection with the intended STUN and TURN server details. If TURN requires authentication, issue credentials using the service’s authentication model. The WebRTC Project’s TURN example includes username and credential fields; do not put long-lived secrets in public client code.

Expose the relay through the actual network topology

For self-hosted coturn, configure its listening address and ports and its relay address and port range for the host’s real topology. The machine firewall, cloud or network firewall, NAT mapping and coturn configuration must agree. If the host is behind NAT, its public and private address configuration must also match that topology.

coturn documentation shows listener and relay ports as separate configuration concerns. Its sample container command is an example, not a universal firewall policy. There is no single port range established here for every deployment: use the ports and range you actually configure, then permit those flows in each relevant firewall.

Plan for networks that block UDP

RFC 8835 requires support for TURN over TCP and TLS over TCP for environments that block all UDP. Those modes can improve reachability, but they have different transport and performance characteristics. Merely changing a listener port does not guarantee a working path; the selected TURN transport and its network route must both be available.

How should you debug a call that fails after deployment?

  1. Check capture first. Confirm that the deployed page is in a secure context and that the browser grants camera and microphone permission. If capture fails, resolve that before diagnosing ICE.
  2. Verify signaling. Confirm that both peers receive the intended offer and answer, and that trickled ICE candidates reach the correct peer through the signaling service.
  3. Inspect ICE gathering and the selected candidate pair at both ends. Determine whether the chosen route is direct or relayed. Candidate type helps distinguish host, server-reflexive and relayed paths.
  4. Test TURN from outside the server’s subnet. Use valid credentials and check that the listener, relay range, host firewall, cloud firewall and any NAT mapping agree with the coturn configuration.
  5. Check TCP/TLS fallback when UDP is blocked. Confirm that the TURN service offers the required mode and that the corresponding route is reachable from the client network.
  6. Compare conditions methodically. Repeat the same call while changing one factor at a time—browser, user network or deployment configuration. A successful call on one Wi-Fi network establishes only that the tested route worked.

Should you self-host TURN or use a managed service?

Option What it offers What you take on
Self-hosted coturn Control over the relay service and its network configuration. Operating the service and making its listener and relay paths reachable through the host, NAT and firewalls.
Cloud-provided TURN A provider-managed relay option; the WebRTC Project describes cloud-provided as well as self-hosted choices. Configuring the provider’s service details and credentials in the application. No provider-specific price or service terms are established here.

Neither option removes the need to verify reachability from the networks your users actually use. Direct ICE connectivity can avoid relaying; when that route fails, a working TURN service is what allows media to take a relay path.
