WebRTC vs. RTMP: Which Streaming Protocol Should You Use?

WebRTC/WHIP suits real-time interaction when the entire stack supports it. RTMP/RTMPS remains a practical ingest route when your encoder and destination use it; the complete playback chain determines end-to-end latency.

Use WebRTC when interactive, real-time communication is the priority and your encoder, ingest service, and playback stack all support the required WebRTC workflow. Use RTMP or RTMPS when your established encoder-to-ingest path supports it and the full delivery chain can meet your latency needs. Neither protocol guarantees a particular end-to-end delay: ingest, processing, network conditions, and viewer playback all matter.

WebRTC vs RTMP: what is the practical difference?

WebRTC is a set of technologies for real-time audio and video communication. For publishing into a streaming service, WHIP provides a standardized HTTP-based way to ingest WebRTC media. The IETF describes WHIP as a protocol for WebRTC-based content ingestion into streaming services or CDNs; its negotiation involves ICE, DTLS/SRTP, and RTP/RTCP. Read RFC 9725.

RTMP is a long-established publishing and ingest workflow used by encoders and streaming services. RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS in the documented AWS setup. These terms describe a path from the publisher to ingest; they do not by themselves specify how a service processes the stream or delivers it to viewers. For example, a platform may accept RTMP ingest but use a different playback protocol.

Which streaming protocol should I use?

Choose for the complete workflow, not the protocol name alone. Check that the publisher or encoder, ingest endpoint, and viewer playback client support the intended path, then verify the service’s media requirements and the networks involved.

Decision factor When WebRTC/WHIP may fit When RTMP/RTMPS may fit
Interaction and latency target Real-time participation is central and the service supports a WebRTC publishing and playback workflow. Your established encoder-to-ingest workflow is RTMP-based and the full chain’s latency is acceptable.
Compatibility Your encoder and destination support WebRTC publishing, including any required WHIP configuration. Your encoder and destination document RTMP or RTMPS ingest.
Network access The publisher’s network allows the service’s required TCP and UDP traffic. The publisher’s network allows the relevant RTMP(S) traffic.
Media constraints The service’s supported codecs, tracks, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, and encoder options match your output. The same service-specific media checks apply; do not assume RTMP permits a different format or quality.
Playback and scale The service can distribute the stream to the intended viewers through a supported playback design. The destination’s ingest and viewer-delivery design meet the audience and latency needs.

There is no universal winner. A service’s implementation and the viewer’s playback path can matter more to the result than whether the encoder sends WebRTC or RTMP.

Which protocol has lower latency?

WebRTC and WHIP are intended for real-time use, making them a natural option to evaluate for interactive sessions. But the available documentation does not establish a protocol-wide latency number that proves WebRTC is always faster than RTMP. End-to-end delay depends on the encoder, ingest service, processing and distribution path, network, and player.

Compare the actual service and playback combination you plan to use. Confirm whether the platform offers a real-time mode, what clients can play it, and what latency the provider documents for that exact configuration. A low-latency ingest protocol cannot make a downstream player or delivery mode real-time by itself.

Can I stream with WebRTC from a browser?

It is possible with a browser and a service designed for that workflow, but browser support is not universal. Cloudflare documents one example in which a browser publishes webcam video using WHIP and plays it back using WHEP. That example demonstrates a specific provider workflow, not a guarantee that every browser, service, or destination accepts WHIP. See Cloudflare’s browser-based WebRTC example.

WHIP standardizes the WebRTC ingest exchange; it does not erase provider-specific limits. Before building a browser publisher, check the target service’s requirements for supported browsers, media tracks, authentication, codecs, network access, and playback.

Does OBS support WebRTC or RTMP?

OBS documents both WHIP publishing for WebRTC-based workflows and conventional RTMP streaming. The OBS WHIP guide, dated January 14, 2025, explains that a bearer token is the WHIP equivalent of a stream key and that the service’s WHIP settings are entered in OBS. Consult the current OBS WHIP Streaming Guide and verify your installed OBS build and packaging support before configuring it.

For RTMP, AWS documents publishing to IVS using OBS or FFmpeg, including RTMPS as the TLS-protected option in its setup instructions. This demonstrates documented AWS workflows, not universal support at every streaming destination. See AWS IVS RTMP publishing and its streaming setup guide.

Service-specific settings: an Amazon IVS example

Encoder settings are imposed by the destination, not by a protocol in isolation. The following figures apply to the documented Amazon IVS Real-Time workflows; they are not general WebRTC or RTMP limits. Check the live service documentation before configuring a production stream.

OBS with WHIP for IVS Real-Time

  • AWS’s guide specifies OBS v30 or newer for this workflow.
  • The documented input ceiling is 720p and 8.5 Mbps. AWS recommends a 1- or 2-second keyframe interval.
  • AWS says OBS does not support simulcast in this workflow and recommends a bitrate below 2.5 Mbps for viewers on lower-bandwidth connections.
  • AWS warns that an unstable broadcaster network can cause intermittent freezing.
  • Check the required video track and the service’s other input constraints rather than assuming WHIP accepts any OBS output.

See AWS IVS OBS WHIP support for the service-specific configuration.

RTMP for IVS Real-Time

  • AWS’s documented IVS RTMP workflow also specifies a 720p and 8.5 Mbps input ceiling and gives keyframe guidance.
  • For the described real-time stream, AWS requires B-frames to be disabled.
  • The stream must include both audio and video tracks.

These are IVS requirements, not properties shared by all RTMP services. Follow AWS IVS RTMP publishing instructions for the applicable encoder setup.

Network requirements can decide the choice

WebRTC can require both signaling and UDP media traffic, while RTMP(S) follows a different network path. On its IVS network-requirements page, AWS lists TCP 4443 for WebRTC SDP exchange and UDP ports 32768–61000 for ephemeral WebRTC traffic to its documented destinations. For RTMPS it lists TCP 443; for unencrypted RTMP it lists TCP 1935. These destinations and ports are AWS IVS-specific and may change, so verify the current AWS IVS network requirements.

On managed, corporate, or restricted networks, ask the network administrator whether the required destinations and ports are allowed. A protocol that works on a home connection may fail behind a firewall or proxy. Avoid treating a successful connection to the ingest endpoint as proof that every viewer can play the resulting stream.

A reliable protocol-selection checklist

  1. Define the viewing experience. Decide whether viewers need genuinely interactive conversation or can accept the latency of the platform’s chosen playback mode.
  2. Confirm all three endpoints. Verify that your encoder or browser can publish, the service accepts that ingest protocol, and the intended viewer clients can play the service’s output.
  3. Read the destination’s media limits. Check codec, audio/video track requirements, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and any B-frame or simulcast rules.
  4. Check network access. Confirm the publisher can reach the exact service destinations over required TCP and UDP ports.
  5. Test the full path. Measure the delay from capture to playback with the actual service, player, and network you intend to use; do not infer it from a protocol label.
  6. Choose the supported path with the fewest compromises. Prefer WebRTC/WHIP when real-time interaction is central and the whole stack supports it; prefer RTMP/RTMPS when that is the established, supported ingest route and the resulting viewer experience is suitable.

What this protocol choice does not solve

Neither WHIP nor RTMP makes copyrighted or reused material safe to broadcast. You remain responsible for having the rights to the music, video, and other material you stream and for following the destination’s policies. Likewise, a capture card is not required by either protocol: it is an optional way to bring an HDMI camera or console into a computer-based workflow, subject to compatibility with the device and encoder. The protocol decision concerns publishing and delivery, not the upstream camera connection.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos to loop continuously, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a choice between WebRTC and RTMP. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the uploaded video running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.

The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-based WebRTC publisher. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
