Its lossy and lossless compression methods, the image’s content, and the chosen quality setting all affect the result. A website—not the browser acting on its own—offers or serves WebP, and the browser selects it only when the page or server provides a suitable option.
Why can WebP images be smaller?
WebP uses two compression approaches. In lossy mode, it uses predictive coding based on VP8: the encoder predicts image information from neighboring pixel blocks and stores the differences. In lossless mode, it can reuse image fragments that have already appeared to reconstruct pixels. The methods are different, so the right comparison depends on the image and the desired visual result. Google’s WebP compression documentation explains both approaches.

Published comparisons give a useful reference, not a promise for a particular conversion:
- Lossy WebP versus JPEG: Google’s 2023 documentation reports WebP files 25–34% smaller at equivalent SSIM quality. MDN reports 25–35% smaller at visually similar compression levels; the publication year for that MDN page is not stated. Google and MDN describe these comparisons.
- Lossless WebP versus PNG: Google’s 2023 documentation and MDN each report about 26% smaller files for their comparisons. Those figures do not establish the savings for every image. Google and MDN give the comparison figures.
Actual results vary with image content, compression mode, encoder, and quality target. Compare formats at the quality you need rather than assuming conversion alone will shrink a file.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Is WebP lossy or lossless, and what can it contain?
It can be either. WebP also supports transparency and animation, and its container can carry metadata and color profiles. The IETF’s format specification describes WebP as RIFF-based and supporting lossy and lossless compression, alpha, and animation; Google’s documentation describes metadata and embedded ICC profiles. RFC 9649 and Google’s WebP documentation provide the format details.
Choose a format based on the asset’s purpose and the result you need. A photograph, transparent graphic, text-heavy illustration, or animation can respond differently to compression. Verify that the selected output preserves the required transparency, color, animation, and metadata.

How does a browser decide whether to use WebP?
The site supplies the choices. The browser does not automatically convert an image into WebP. A page can offer alternative formats in HTML, or a server can use HTTP content negotiation to return an acceptable format.

Offer alternatives in HTML
A <picture> element can provide sources in different formats, along with a fallback image. The browser selects from the sources the page offers. Responsive image workflows can also offer multiple image sizes for different display conditions; format and size are separate choices. See web.dev’s image performance guide.

Negotiate the format with the server
Browsers send an Accept request header listing media types they can accept. A server can check whether that list includes image/webp and return WebP when appropriate. The response’s Content-Type identifies the format actually sent. MDN explains the Accept header and Google documents WebP support information in its WebP FAQ.
If one URL returns different formats depending on the request’s Accept header, the response should include Vary: Accept. This tells shared caches that the response varies by that request header, helping prevent a cached representation for one client from being served to another that requested a different format. web.dev calls out this cache requirement.

Do you need a WebP fallback?
Use a fallback when your audience may include clients that do not support WebP. With HTML alternatives, provide a fallback image after the WebP source so the browser has another option. With server negotiation, return a format the client accepts when WebP is not acceptable. MDN recommends a JPEG or PNG fallback for unsupported clients. Current major browsers broadly support WebP, but historical compatibility thresholds are not a live measure of browser usage. See MDN’s image format guide and Google’s WebP FAQ.

How should you check WebP compression quality?
There is no single compression setting that suits every image. Compare the output against the original at the intended display size, checking both file size and visible quality. Lossy compression can create noticeable artifacts around sharp edges and in high-contrast colored text on flat backgrounds, so inspect line art and text-heavy images closely. web.dev’s image performance guide recommends testing compression levels against the quality required.
