WebGPU Adapter Is Null? Why navigator.gpu Alone Isn’t Enough

A present navigator.gpu property does not guarantee an adapter. Check the promise result, then investigate Chrome settings, GPU status, request options, and process health.

If navigator.gpu exists but requestAdapter() resolves to null, the WebGPU entry point is exposed, but the browser has not provided an adapter for that request. Check the returned value before calling requestDevice(), then troubleshoot adapter availability separately from API availability.

What a null adapter means

navigator.gpu and a usable WebGPU adapter are separate checks. The property’s presence does not establish that the browser can supply an adapter. MDN explains that requestAdapter() resolves to null when an appropriate adapter is unavailable. The browser chooses whether to return one and, if it does, selects it based on the request and system conditions. See MDN’s requestAdapter() documentation.

Use an explicit null check before requesting a device:

if (!navigator.gpu) {
  throw new Error("WebGPU API is unavailable in this context");
}

const adapter = await navigator.gpu.requestAdapter();
if (!adapter) {
  throw new Error("No appropriate WebGPU adapter is available");
}

const device = await adapter.requestDevice();

This distinguishes an unavailable API from a failed adapter request and prevents calling requestDevice() on a null value.

How to troubleshoot in Chrome

Chrome’s troubleshooting guide recommends investigating these causes in order. These settings and diagnostics are Chrome-specific; other browsers may use different controls or report failures differently. See Chrome’s WebGPU troubleshooting guide.

  1. Check graphics acceleration. Open Chrome Settings → System and confirm “Use graphics acceleration when available” is enabled. Chrome’s guide says WebGPU is disabled when this setting is off.
  2. Check platform support and configuration. Chrome’s guide identifies chrome://flags/#enable-unsafe-webgpu as a troubleshooting flag and names chrome://flags/#enable-vulkan for experimental Linux support. These are browser-specific diagnostic settings, not general WebGPU requirements. Avoid treating experimental flags as a routine fix.
  3. Inspect the GPU blocklist status. Open chrome://gpu and look for the status “WebGPU has been disabled via blocklist or the command line.” Chrome documents flags that can override blocklists, but overriding browser safeguards is not a universal first-line solution.
  4. Compare the request options. If your code passes options, test a plain navigator.gpu.requestAdapter() call to see whether the options affect the result. A powerPreference value is a hint rather than a command to select a particular GPU; the browser may consider battery state, attached displays, and removable GPUs.
  5. Check whether Chrome detects a GPU. In chrome://gpu, inspect the GPU information and status. If Chrome does not detect a GPU, changing JavaScript request options is unlikely to resolve the underlying detection problem.
  6. Consider a GPU-process crash. If the GPU process has crashed repeatedly, Chrome recommends reloading the page or restarting the browser. If the problem continues, record the browser and version, operating system, GPU and driver details, request options, and relevant chrome://gpu status for diagnosis.

Check request options without expecting a guaranteed fallback

A call with no options asks for the default adapter. If you pass powerPreference, remember that it guides selection rather than naming or forcing a specific GPU. MDN notes that choosing a high-performance preference can increase power use and the risk of device loss, so use it only when there is a concrete need.

Some browsers may provide a fallback adapter, potentially including a software implementation, but availability varies by system. Do not assume a software adapter is always available: MDN’s reviewed documentation says forceFallbackAdapter is not supported by any browser.

Do not confuse API exposure with adapter acquisition

Secure-context rules and browser support help explain whether navigator.gpu is exposed; they are not, by themselves, a complete explanation for a null adapter after the property is present. MDN identifies requestAdapter() as secure-context-only in supporting browsers. Chrome’s guide gives minimum versions for API exposure of Chrome 113 on ChromeOS, macOS, and Windows, and Chrome 121 on Android. Those thresholds concern API exposure, not a guarantee that an adapter will be available on a particular device.

If the Chrome checks do not fit your setup, collect the browser and version, operating system, GPU and driver, page origin, exact request options, and relevant browser diagnostics before applying browser-specific advice. A Chrome flag or blocklist explanation should not be assumed to apply to another browser.
