A built-in webcam privacy shutter is usually the better choice when your laptop has one: it is made for that model and physically slides over the lens. If there is no built-in shutter, an external cover can provide the same kind of optical barrier—but only if it fits the camera area and does not interfere with closing the laptop. MacBook owners should be especially careful: Apple warns that camera covers can damage the display or affect the ambient-light sensor.
How a shutter and a cover differ
Both accessories can physically block the camera when an opaque barrier fully covers the lens. The difference is how they attach and fit. A built-in shutter is part of a particular laptop; an external cover is an add-on that must suit the device’s camera placement, nearby sensors and lid clearance.

| Consideration | Built-in privacy shutter | External webcam cover |
|---|---|---|
| Physical blocking | A device-integrated slider can cover the lens. Microsoft’s design guidance describes a mechanical shutter as an opaque, manually operated sliding cover that blocks the camera when closed. | Can block the lens if it is opaque and correctly aligned. The guidance available here does not establish that every retail cover meets that standard. |
| Fit and availability | Designed for a particular device, but model-dependent. For example, Lenovo documents a sliding shutter on selected Yoga 13w Gen 2 models. | Must match the camera location and surrounding bezel; its thickness may affect whether the lid closes safely. |
| Other sensors | Check whether the shutter covers every relevant camera, particularly on a panel with both RGB and infrared (IR) sensors. | Check that it covers the intended camera without obscuring nearby sensors or controls. |
| Installation and upkeep | No separate accessory or adhesive is needed; find and operate the laptop’s slider. | May need to be installed, removed or replaced. Adhesive should not leave residue, and the cover must stay aligned. |
| Best fit | A laptop with a working shutter that fully covers the camera or cameras you intend to block. | A device without a suitable built-in shutter, when a compatible cover can be used without risking the display. |
Does a webcam privacy shutter actually cover the camera?
It should physically occlude the lens when closed, but confirm how your specific laptop is designed. Microsoft’s Windows camera guidance describes a mechanical shutter as a user-operated sliding cover made of opaque material. Its design expectation is that a closed shutter prevents an image from being captured until the user operates the physical control. This is design guidance, not independent verification of every product sold with a shutter.
Some laptop panels contain more than one camera, such as RGB and IR sensors. Microsoft advises device makers to cover all cameras on the panel so an uncovered sensor does not undermine the privacy expectation. Consult your laptop’s manual if you need to know which sensors its shutter covers.

A shutter is also not necessarily a camera-disconnect switch. Microsoft says the camera may remain active to the operating system while the closed shutter blocks the scene; during a stream, a fully occluded sensor should produce a black or nearly black image. The physical barrier blocks the camera’s view, but does not necessarily disconnect the camera from the computer.
Can a webcam cover damage a laptop screen?
It can on some devices. Apple warns that Mac laptop display clearance is very tight, so a cover over the camera may damage the display when the lid closes. A cover can also interfere with the ambient-light sensor, affecting automatic brightness and True Tone.

For a Mac laptop, Apple says a cover left in place should be no thicker than 0.1 mm and should not leave adhesive residue. Remove a thicker cover before closing the computer. That 0.1 mm limit is Apple’s guidance for Mac laptops; do not assume it applies to other laptop brands. Check the device maker’s instructions for your model before attaching anything.
What about the camera light and app permissions?
These controls help with awareness and access, but they do not physically cover the lens. A shutter or cover blocks the camera’s view; an indicator light signals camera activity, and app permissions regulate which software can request access. They address different concerns, so a user who specifically wants an optical barrier needs a physical one.

Apple describes the green camera indicator and app permissions as alternatives to an add-on cover for Mac users who do not need a physical barrier. Apple says its built-in FaceTime HD camera cannot activate without the indicator turning on, and that apps require camera permission in macOS Mojave or later. Those statements describe Apple’s Mac design and software controls, not every laptop or operating system.
Which option should you choose?
- Check your laptop’s manual. Look for a built-in physical shutter and confirm which camera or sensors it covers. The feature is model-specific; Lenovo, for example, documents it on selected Yoga 13w Gen 2 models.
- If the built-in shutter covers the cameras you care about, use it. It avoids the fit, adhesive and lid-clearance issues of an add-on.
- If there is no suitable shutter, check the maker’s cover guidance first. Confirm that a cover will fit the camera area, avoid nearby sensors and allow the lid to close safely. For Mac laptops, follow Apple’s 0.1 mm and no-residue guidance.
- If the maker warns against a cover, do not force one to fit. Use available camera indicators and app permissions for awareness and access control, understanding that these do not block the lens.
What a camera cover does not protect
A webcam shutter or cover blocks the camera’s view; it does not disable the microphone or prevent audio recording. If your concern is microphone access, use your operating system’s microphone permissions or a device-specific hardware control rather than relying on a camera barrier.

No universal winner fits every laptop. Prefer the built-in shutter when it fully covers the relevant camera; otherwise, consider an external cover only when it is compatible with the device and safe for its lid clearance.
