Its apparent commotion comes from several young stars ejecting outflows that slam into surrounding gas and dust. The resulting shocks glow in infrared light, and the overlapping flows create a complex scene—not one jet sweeping across the cloud.
What Webb’s image reveals
The image centers on LkH(α) 234, a luminous pre-main-sequence star with a distinctive eight-pronged diffraction pattern. A golden cavity extends to its left; to the right, a red, clumpy region contains younger protostars embedded in gray gas and dust. This is an infrared image assembled from Webb’s NIRCam observations, not a natural-color view of the nebula as human eyes would see it.

NASA identifies the red glow as cooler molecular hydrogen heated and shocked by protostellar activity. The golden area traces hot atomic hydrogen. These colors represent different structures and physical conditions in the cloud, rather than the visible colors of the gas.
Why the nebula looks so turbulent
Young stars drive outflows
As protostars gather mass, they eject superheated material in jets and other outflows. When those flows collide with dense material around them, they create shocks that heat the gas and produce the textured glow visible in the image.

Several flows overlap
The red region contains outflows from multiple protostars. Their structures overlap along our line of sight, so a two-dimensional image brings several distinct flows together into what looks like a single tangled scene. The apparent commotion is the combined view of real structures, not one jet crossing the entire picture.
The golden cavity and the stars shaping it
The cavity to the left of LkH(α) 234 spans about 3.5 light-years. NASA describes it as a result of the central star’s influence at an earlier stage: outflows helped clear the space, while the star’s light energized the cloud. Some hydrogen was pushed away; compression of other material may help create conditions for additional stars to form.

LkH(α) 234 is around five to eight times the Sun’s mass. NASA describes it as further along than the younger protostars: it has mostly finished gathering mass and is contracting as gravity raises its temperature. Winds from several stars push against the surrounding gas, forming curved bow shocks and smaller cavities. At the top of the golden cavity, combined starlight creates a photodissociation region, where hydrogen molecules break apart into atoms. These interactions offer a view of how the molecular cloud may erode over millions of years.

Webb compared with Spitzer
NASA’s side-by-side comparison shows both telescopes’ infrared views with structures on either side of the central star. Webb resolves finer gas and dust filaments and reveals many background galaxies that are less apparent in Spitzer’s fuzzier image. NASA describes the difference qualitatively; it does not provide a quantified resolution comparison.
