1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the delivery model first: use adaptive streaming for on-demand playback and many live one-to-many streams, and WebRTC when people need to exchange media interactively. Then build a pipeline that encodes for your target devices, packages the media for the chosen player, and verifies compatibility and latency on the platforms you actually support.
Choose a delivery model before choosing formats
On-demand playback, live one-to-many delivery, and interactive real-time media have different constraints. The W3C Community Group’s Web Media Guidelines: Media Playback Use Cases organizes playback around generation, delivery, and consumption; that model is useful for all three, even though the delivery mechanisms differ.

| Use case | Typical delivery shape | What to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| On-demand playback | Encoded versions are packaged for a player to retrieve, commonly as segmented adaptive streams. | Quality across device and network conditions, startup and seeking behavior, and the cost of encoding and delivery. |
| Live one-to-many | A live source is encoded and delivered to many viewers, often using a platform’s specified ingest and playback workflow. | End-to-end latency, segment and manifest behavior, ingest reliability, and the platform’s exact requirements. |
| Interactive real-time media | Browsers or devices exchange media and application data using real-time communication protocols. | Responsive two-way interaction, supported codecs, and the behavior of the target browsers and devices. |
These categories are not interchangeable. A segmented stream may suit a live broadcast where a small delay is acceptable, but a conversation or collaborative feature needs an interactive media path. Decide which delay and interaction model the feature can tolerate before settling on encoding and delivery details.

How do I stream video on the web?
For on-demand or one-to-many playback, a common adaptive-bitrate workflow starts with a high-quality source, creates delivery renditions, divides them into segments, packages them with a manifest, and serves them through delivery infrastructure such as a CDN backed by an origin. The player uses the manifest to request media for playback. The W3C Community Group’s workflow guidance describes these stages as parts of a connected generation, delivery, and playback process.

- Prepare the source. Keep a high-quality mezzanine master when practical so delivery versions can be generated without repeatedly encoding from an already compressed copy.
- Transcode for the audience. Create one or more renditions with defined codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate constraints. More retained image detail generally means a larger output; source resolution and frame rate also affect size. There is no bitrate ladder that fits every title, network, and quality target.
- Segment and package. Divide renditions into media segments and produce a manifest, for example for HLS or DASH, that the playback application can use.
- Deliver and play. Serve the manifest and segments from the delivery infrastructure, then test playback on the devices and networks your audience uses.
Some workflows add encryption before delivery. Content protection choices, player support, and operational requirements should be evaluated for the actual service; the available sources do not establish a universal HLS-versus-DASH winner or a complete current compatibility matrix.
Decide what to operate yourself
A managed encoding and delivery service can take ownership of parts of transcoding, packaging, origin, and CDN operations. Running those components yourself offers more direct control but makes your team responsible for the pipeline and its reliability. Choose based on the control you need and the operational capacity you can sustain, rather than assuming one approach is inherently better.

How do I choose the right video codec for my project?
A codec defines how media is encoded and decoded; a container holds media streams and related structure. The two choices are related, but they are not the same. A file extension or container name alone does not establish that a particular codec configuration will play on every target device.
MDN’s Web video codec guide, checked 7 October 2026, lists these commonly encountered pairings:

| Codec | Common container pairings listed by MDN | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 | MP4, WebM | Designed for internet video; browser and device decoding capability still needs verification. |
| AVC / H.264 | MP4 | A commonly encountered delivery combination, but verify the target configuration. |
| HEVC / H.265 | MP4 | Check support on the actual browser and hardware targets. |
| VP8 | WebM and other containers | Confirm the specific playback path you intend to ship. |
| VP9 | MP4, WebM, and other containers | Confirm support for the target device and stream configuration. |
The best codec choice balances visual quality and output size against compatibility and delivery cost. MDN describes the general tradeoff: retaining more of the source’s quality usually produces larger output. A larger stream can require more bandwidth and storage, while a more compressed version may lose detail. Test with representative content and the devices your audience uses instead of treating a codec label as a quality guarantee.
Plan for compatibility, not just codec efficiency
MDN describes AV1 as designed for internet video, including use with the <video> element and WebRTC, and as royalty-free. Its guide reports browser support while qualifying Safari support to devices with a hardware decoder. That is not a guarantee for every AV1 profile, resolution, or device configuration. Verify the exact combinations you intend to serve and retain a fallback when your audience needs broader coverage.

What is the difference between a codec and a container?
The codec is the method used to compress and encode audio or video and to decode it for playback. The container is the structure that carries one or more media streams and associated information. For example, MP4 is a container; H.264 is a codec. A container can be associated with different codecs, and codec support does not automatically mean every container or stream configuration will work in a given player.

When should I use WebRTC?
Use WebRTC when a browser-based feature needs real-time exchange of media or application data between browsers or devices, such as an interactive call or a live collaborative session. The W3C Recommendation WebRTC: Real-Time Communication in Browsers, published 13 March 2025, defines browser APIs for sending and receiving that data. It addresses a different use case from a playback pipeline built around segments and manifests.
Codec choice still matters in WebRTC. MDN’s Codecs used by WebRTC guide, checked 7 October 2026, says compliant WebRTC browsers must implement VP8 and H.264 Constrained Baseline for video. If you prefer a less universally supported codec, preserve a fallback to the mandatory codecs and verify negotiation and playback on your target browser set.
What WebCodecs does—and does not—guarantee
WebCodecs exposes JavaScript interfaces to codec implementations; it does not require browsers to support a particular codec. The W3C WebCodecs document dated 7 October 2026 is a Working Draft, and it leaves implementations free to support any combination of codecs or none. Feature-detect the specific capability your application needs in the runtime where it will run, and provide an alternative path if that capability is unavailable. Do not treat the presence of the API as proof that a desired codec or configuration is supported.

DASH describes a delivery format, but live ingest requirements are set by the receiving platform. For example, Google’s Delivering Live YouTube Content via DASH guide, checked 7 October 2026, specifies YouTube’s ingest expectations. These values are YouTube-specific, not universal DASH rules.
- Send media segments and the MPD in separate PUT requests.
- Update the MPD and initialization data at least every 60 seconds.
- Use media segments of 1–5 seconds.
- Use closed GOPs; YouTube recommends a GOP of around 2 seconds and requires it to be under 8 seconds.
- Do not assume the ingest segment duration determines the output duration: YouTube notes that it transcodes and re-chunks the input.
Monitor segment uploads as part of the live workflow. Google states that a failed media-segment PUT corresponds to a gap in the video stream and recommends retrying with randomized exponential backoff. Apply the receiving platform’s current instructions rather than copying these values into an unrelated ingest pipeline.
Quick Recap
What to verify before launch
- Interaction model: Confirm whether the feature is on-demand, live one-to-many, or interactive two-way, and whether its latency is acceptable.
- Encoding: Test representative source material at the resolutions, frame rates, bitrates, and codec configurations you plan to deliver.
- Device coverage: Check actual browser, operating-system, and hardware-decoder combinations; define a fallback for unsupported configurations.
- Packaging and player: Verify the chosen manifest, segments, and player together on target devices. Do not assume HLS or DASH is universally preferable.
- Live operations: Follow the ingest service’s own segment, GOP, manifest-update, and retry requirements, and monitor failed uploads.
- Accessibility: Captioning, accessible player controls, and jurisdiction-specific obligations are not established by the technical sources cited here. Check the applicable accessibility standards and legal guidance for your audience.
