For a Chrome extension reading a product page already open in the browser, use parseable Product JSON-LD as the first source and fill missing or unusable fields from marketplace-specific DOM selectors. Then compare the result with the product and offer the shopper can actually see. Neither structured data nor a selector guarantees the right result on every marketplace.
What the extension can read
A Chrome content script runs in the context of a web page and can use the standard DOM to read page details and pass information to the extension. Chrome documents that content scripts run in an isolated world: they cannot simply access JavaScript variables belonging to the page. See Chrome’s content scripts documentation.

This distinction matters when a marketplace keeps product information in its rendered HTML but also has application-specific state in its JavaScript. The workflow here reads accessible page markup and DOM content; it does not depend on reaching into the site’s private variables.
Why start with Product JSON-LD
Structured data gives an extension named fields and relationships to inspect, rather than requiring it to infer every value from where text happens to appear on the page. Google describes structured data as machine-readable information and lists Product and ProductGroup among types relevant to ecommerce. That is guidance about Google’s use of structured data, not a promise that any particular marketplace supplies it or supplies every useful field. See Google’s ecommerce structured-data guidance.

Google Merchant Center recommends JSON-LD and demonstrates a Product with an Offer. Example properties include name, sku, gtin, brand, price, priceCurrency, and availability. Schema.org’s Product vocabulary also includes properties such as brand, GTIN, color, and aggregate rating; those definitions do not establish that a given page uses them. JSON-LD and DOM selectors serve different roles

The coverage and maintenance differences in this table are practical engineering considerations, not measured performance results. Google’s guidance says markup should match values shown to the user. For its product-data matching conditions, Merchant Center also says markup must be present in the HTML returned by the web server rather than generated by JavaScript after page load. That requirement is specific to Google’s matching guidance; it does not mean a browser extension cannot inspect DOM content that appears later.

Build the extraction in a few deliberate steps
- Inspect JSON-LD blocks. In the accessible DOM, find
script[type="application/ld+json"]elements and parse each block defensively. A block may contain one object, an array, or a graph. Walk the parsed structures to locate Product data and related variants, then inspect nested offers. These parsing steps are implementation guidance, not a procedure prescribed by the cited documentation. - Normalize useful fields without flattening relationships. Record product name, brand, and available SKU or GTIN, along with each offer’s price, currency, availability, and condition when present. Retain the source object and associate every offer with its product or variant. If several offers exist, do not collapse them into one supposedly definitive price.
- Check the selected product and offer against the page. Compare the extracted values with the shopper-visible name, selected variant, displayed price, and availability. When the markup provides identifiers, use SKU or GTIN associations to help keep an offer attached to the correct item. Merchant Center’s guidance calls for structured data to match visible values and describes identifier matching for multiple offers and variants.
- Fill gaps with marketplace-specific selectors. If a field is absent or unusable in JSON-LD, query selectors tailored to that marketplace’s DOM. Keep those selectors isolated by site so a layout change can be handled without altering extraction logic for every marketplace. The official Chrome documentation establishes DOM access, not universal product-page selectors; selector design and upkeep are engineering work.
- Validate the final record. Treat disagreements between JSON-LD, selected variant, and visible offer as conflicts to resolve, not as permission to silently choose a convenient value. Preserve enough source and association information to diagnose which element or structured-data object supplied a field.
Handle timing and incomplete data carefully
A page may render or update visible product details after the initial document arrives, while Google Merchant Center’s server-returned-HTML condition applies to its own matching guidance. These are different concerns: an extension can inspect the DOM available to its content script, but it must not assume that a value visible later was included in the server-returned markup. Wait for the marketplace’s relevant content to appear before applying its selectors, and validate the extracted result after variant or offer changes.

Do not treat a missing property as proof that the product lacks that information, or assume every marketplace exposes a complete Product object. Use only fields actually found and validated; leave unavailable values unset rather than inventing them.

What makes the workflow marketplace-specific
The JSON-LD-first order is a practical implementation choice, not a guarantee in the source documentation. Structured data can reduce reliance on layout-specific parsing when it is present and usable. DOM selectors can then supplement it, but no selector set works across all marketplaces: element structure, labels, variant behavior, and loading timing differ. Expect to tune and maintain selectors per site, and keep visible-page validation as the check on both sources.
