Web Scraping vs. URL-to-Markdown APIs for RAG: Which Should You Use?

For known URLs, compare a direct fetch with a single-page API. For domain-wide ingestion, evaluate a crawler. Test extraction quality, operations, and cost on your own corpus.

For a few pages whose URLs you already know, compare a direct fetch and your own HTML-to-text conversion with a single-URL Markdown API. For a whole domain that must be discovered, evaluate a site crawler instead. Neither approach wins for every RAG workload: the right choice depends on page scope, JavaScript rendering, extraction quality, operational capacity, data controls, and cost at your expected volume.

What is the difference between scraping, a URL-to-Markdown API, and a crawler?

Custom web scraping

A custom scraper is an implementation you operate. Your code determines how to request pages, render JavaScript when required, select content, clean it, capture metadata, retry failures, and store results. This gives you control over source-specific exceptions, but also makes your team responsible for adapting when sites change and for managing browser infrastructure and crawl behavior.

URL-to-Markdown API

A URL-to-Markdown API accepts a page URL and returns extracted content, often as Markdown, HTML, or structured data. For example, Firecrawl’s Scrape documentation describes Chromium rendering and output in several formats, as well as actions such as click, type, wait, and scroll. These are product capabilities described by the vendor, not proof that extraction will be complete or correct on every target site. Check behavior, metadata, authentication, region, error handling, and output fidelity against your own pages.

Site crawler

A crawler discovers and fetches multiple pages, commonly by following links or using a sitemap. Firecrawl distinguishes its tools by scope: Scrape for a known URL, Map to find URLs, and Crawl when starting with a domain and seeking site-wide content. Its Crawl documentation describes sitemap and recursive link discovery, path inclusion and exclusion, depth limits, and streaming results. Those are useful examples of controls to assess, not an endorsement or independent quality ranking. A broad crawl can collect far more than a RAG corpus needs, so define the scope deliberately.

Which approach should you evaluate first?

Workload or constraint Evaluate first Validate
A small number of known URLs Direct fetch with your converter, or a single-URL API Main-content coverage, tables, headings, links, metadata, latency, and failure handling
Many known URLs with JavaScript-rendered content Browser-capable scraper or API Content after rendering, authentication boundaries, browser cost, and repeatability
A domain must be discovered and ingested Site crawler or custom link-and-sitemap traversal Include/exclude rules, depth, duplicate and canonical URLs, freshness, and page caps
Sources include PDFs or office files Document-parsing pipeline, potentially alongside a web crawler Table and layout preservation, OCR needs, page-level provenance, and format support
Strict data-handling or deployment control Self-hosted implementation or self-hostable tool Infrastructure, secrets, logs, retention, access controls, and upgrade responsibility
Fast initial implementation and limited operations capacity Hosted API candidate Terms, data retention, rate limits, expected-volume pricing, and export or exit options

These are starting points, not universal rankings. For a known URL, a simple fetch may be sufficient if the page is static and your converter preserves the information you need. A service may reduce implementation work, but its output still needs validation. For domain-wide ingestion, discovery and scope controls matter as much as extraction.

How should you compare the options for a RAG workload?

Run the same representative URLs through each candidate and define success before comparing. Include static and JavaScript-heavy pages, long pages, tables, repeated navigation, error pages, and any authentication flow you are permitted to use. Measure:

  • Whether the answer-bearing content and its caveats are present, and how much navigation or boilerplate remains.
  • Whether headings, tables, links, titles, and source metadata survive in a useful form.
  • Successful-page rate, latency distribution, retries, and behavior on errors or timeouts.
  • Output tokens, operator time, and total cost for the same pages and refresh schedule.
  • How duplicates, changed pages, deletions, and failed crawls are handled.

No general winner follows from feature descriptions alone. The evidence here does not establish an independent head-to-head benchmark; choose based on results for your corpus, requirements, and operating constraints.

What does Markdown contribute to a RAG pipeline?

Markdown can make heading-aware chunking convenient, but it is only an intermediate representation—not a ready-made retrieval corpus. Preserve source URL, retrieval time, title, section heading, and page identity as metadata. Remove repeated navigation carefully, retain tables and links when they carry useful evidence, and avoid chunks that separate a claim from its qualifications or source context.

Plan for corpus maintenance as well as initial ingestion. Decide how to rediscover pages, detect changes, remove stale chunks, and distinguish a failed crawl from a genuinely empty result. For broad domains, constrain paths and depth to reduce irrelevant or duplicate material.

Hosted API or self-hosted scraper?

Hosted APIs

A hosted service can reduce the amount of browser and crawling infrastructure your team operates. In exchange, you take on service dependence, provider-specific output, metered usage, data-processing questions, and the possibility of throttling or unsupported targets. Estimate cost using your expected page volume and refresh cadence, including any enhanced rendering or structured extraction. Check current terms and actual usage accounting rather than projecting from a headline plan price: vendor pricing and credit rules can change.

Self-hosted tools

Self-hosting can put crawling and content handling under your infrastructure and change control, while transferring browser runtime, network access, scaling, monitoring, upgrades, and failure handling to your team. Crawl4AI’s documentation describes a user-run library as well as a cloud option; it says the local library or server runs browsers under the user’s configuration, while its cloud option handles infrastructure. Firecrawl says its open-source stack can be self-hosted but does not include its managed proxy and anti-bot layer. Treat these as product-specific descriptions, and verify current licensing, operational requirements, and feature parity before choosing.

When do PDFs and other documents need a separate pipeline?

Ordinary HTML scraping may not be enough when the corpus includes PDFs or office files. A document parser can complement a web crawler by handling file-specific extraction. Unstructured’s documentation describes file-type-specific partitioning, URL-based HTML partitioning, and PDF strategies. That adjacent capability does not make a document parser a substitute for discovering and crawling a multi-page website; assess layout, tables, OCR, and page-level provenance for the actual files.

Does robots.txt authorize access?

No. RFC 9309, the IETF standard for the Robots Exclusion Protocol, states: “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” RFC 9309 treats robots rules as crawler guidance, not a security boundary or permission to retrieve protected material. Follow published crawling rules and rate guidance, and separately assess access controls, site terms, privacy obligations, and other constraints that apply to your deployment.
