Choose SingleFile if you want a standalone HTML file you can open offline. Choose Evernote Web Clipper if you want to save page content as a searchable, organized Evernote note. They serve different archiving goals: one produces a portable file; the other puts a clip in a notebook.
How the two tools save a page
SingleFile: a self-contained HTML file
SingleFile is a browser extension that saves a web page and its resources—including images, stylesheets, fonts, and frames—as one HTML file. The project says the saved page can be opened offline in a browser without the extension. Its listed features also include selecting content, annotating pages, automatic saving, batch URL saving, saving bookmarked pages, and sending pages to services such as GitHub, Amazon S3, Google Drive, or WebDAV. SingleFile is free and open source under the AGPL license.

Evernote Web Clipper: a note in Evernote
Evernote Web Clipper saves captures into Evernote. Its formats range from extracting an article to retaining a static view of the full page. Evernote says clips include the page content and URL and can be searched, including text in images. Available formats and support can vary by browser.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Clip format | What it captures |
|---|---|
| Article | The page’s main section. |
| Multi-Select | Page sections you choose, combined into one clip. |
| Simplified Article | Article content with layout and formatting removed. |
| Full page | A static copy that retains the page’s design and navigation. |
| Bookmark | The URL, a thumbnail, and a snippet. |
| Screenshot | A static visual capture. |
| PDF attachment | A PDF attached to an Evernote note. |
| Selection | Text or images you select. |
Evernote’s quick-start guide describes Article, Simplified Article, and Screenshot modes, with options to choose a notebook, add a tag, or leave a comment before saving. Settings can set a default mode and notebook or tag behavior; the available settings can vary by browser. See Evernote’s Quick Start Guide, clip format descriptions, and settings documentation.

What can go wrong with an archived page?
Evernote clips can differ from the original
Evernote warns that complex designs, interactive content, and multimedia can cause clipping problems or produce a different-looking result. Its suggested approaches are to try another clip mode, manually select the content, or use a screenshot. See Evernote’s troubleshooting guidance.

Offline does not necessarily mean interactive
A saved HTML file or static capture serves a different purpose from a working copy of a website. The cited product descriptions do not guarantee that scripts, video, or interactive behavior will keep working offline. If exact appearance matters, a screenshot or PDF-like visual capture may suit that purpose better than editable text or a self-contained HTML page.
Check browser availability before relying on a workflow
Evernote’s browser lists differ between its documentation pages: the quick-start guide names Chrome, Safari, and Firefox, while the settings page also discusses Edge, Opera, and legacy Internet Explorer support. SingleFile lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Firefox for Android, and Safari apps. These lists may not establish current store availability, so check the relevant extension store and your browser before adopting a platform-specific workflow.

How to choose with confidence
- Decide what you need to retrieve. Choose a local HTML file when you want to open the saved page offline; choose an Evernote note when notebook organization and search matter more.
- Pick the capture type. For Evernote, use Article or Simplified Article for reading, Selection or Multi-Select for chosen content, Full page for a static page copy, or Screenshot for a visual record.
- Test representative pages. Try pages with the layouts, embedded media, or interactive elements you need to preserve. Compare the saved result with the original rather than assuming every page will capture equally well.
- Keep a second representation when necessary. If an HTML archive does not retain an important visual detail, save a screenshot or PDF-like capture as a separate record.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a screenshot or PDF rather than an offline HTML archive or searchable note, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can capture a URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. Before the shot, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
