If a web clipper saves a blank screenshot, first check whether it happens on one page or every page. Then update and restart your browser, confirm the extension is enabled and allowed on the page, and test both an article mode and screenshot mode. Those checks help narrow the problem; a blank capture alone does not identify one universal cause.
1. Find out whether the problem is page-specific
- Open a simple page on a different website and try clipping it.
- If that capture works, retry the original page. Complex layouts, interactive content, and multimedia can affect how a page clips, according to Evernote’s troubleshooting guidance, but that does not establish any one of them as the cause of a blank screenshot.
- If captures are blank on multiple pages, continue with the browser and extension checks below.
Also note whether the page is a PDF. One user described an Evernote PDF screenshot as “the screen goes black,” but that is an anecdotal description, not an official diagnosis or evidence of a general PDF issue.

2. Update the browser and check that the clipper is enabled
Evernote recommends using the latest browser version when troubleshooting clipping problems. Restart the browser after updating, then verify that the extension is turned on. In Microsoft Edge, Evernote’s documented path is Settings and more → Extensions; switch Evernote Web Clipper on there if it is off.

Browser menus and permission controls vary, so use the extension settings for your browser if those labels do not match. Check that the clipper is permitted to access the page you are trying to capture.

3. Compare capture modes
Try an article-style capture and a screenshot capture on the same page. They work differently: article modes extract page content, while screenshot mode captures a visual image. If one works and the other does not, that difference is useful diagnostic information.
- Try Article, Simplified Article, or Full Page.
- If the article capture omits content, manually select the content if the clipper offers that option.
- Try Screenshot separately. Evernote’s quick-start guide describes it as a way to capture and annotate a page.
Evernote lists Article, Simplified Article, Full Page, Bookmark, and Screenshot among its clip actions. Available options can vary slightly by browser, and its mobile clipping behavior differs from desktop.
4. Check permissions, cookies, and extensions that can interfere
- Browser access: Confirm the clipper can access the current page. If the browser shows a security or permission prompt, review it and grant the requested application permission only if you intend to use the clipper.
- Cookies: Evernote’s troubleshooting guidance recommends allowing third-party cookies for clipping problems. Browser cookie controls differ; change the relevant setting only as needed for the clipper.
- Ad blockers: Temporarily disable ad-blocking extensions and retry. If that changes the result, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify interference.
- Allowlisting: Evernote also recommends whitelisting Evernote in browser settings where applicable.
Permission prompts and their wording depend on the browser. Microsoft’s OneNote Web Clipper setup guidance likewise instructs users to acknowledge browser security messages and confirm requested permissions if prompted.

5. Refresh the browser session
- Clear the browser cache.
- Sign out of Evernote, then sign back in.
- Reload the page and retry the same capture mode that failed.
These are steps in Evernote’s official troubleshooting guidance. If you use a different web clipper, its account and cache instructions may differ.
6. Use a documented fallback if you need the page now
Microsoft documents OneNote Web Clipper’s Full Page and Region options as screenshot-image captures. Its Article mode captures editable text and images instead. This gives you a separate way to preserve a page while diagnosing your original clipper; switching tools does not repair the original extension.
Choose based on what you need to keep: a visual image of the whole page or a selected region, or editable article content. OneNote is a software workflow rather than a fix for Evernote’s blank capture.

7. If the screenshot is still blank, record these details
Evernote’s troubleshooting page suggests trying another page but does not provide a dedicated blank-screenshot diagnostic or escalation checklist. Before seeking support, write down:
- Your browser and its version, plus your operating system.
- Whether the problem occurs on one page or several.
- Whether article capture succeeds while screenshot capture fails, or vice versa.
- Whether the affected page is a PDF.
- Which permission, cookie, cache, or extension changes you tried and what happened.
This makes it easier to describe the failure without assuming its cause. Browser interfaces and extension behavior can change; Evernote’s troubleshooting page was updated March 14, 2025, its settings page July 7, 2025, and its quick-start guide October 8, 2024.
