The right choice depends on whether you value readable, reusable content or a close match to the page’s appearance. This review compares documented Evernote and OneNote workflows; it does not claim a controlled test of current capture quality across browsers.
What a web clipper saves—and why that affects quality
“Clip” can mean several different outputs. An editable article is easier to search, quote, and reorganize, but extraction may omit or rearrange parts of a complex page. A screenshot-based capture keeps the visible appearance, but its text is not the same as an editable article. A bookmark saves a reference rather than a full copy.

Evernote Web Clipper: capture choices and limitations
Available formats
Evernote documents Article, Simplified Article, Full Page, Bookmark, Screenshot, and Selection. Article attempts to detect the main content and ignore surrounding material. Simplified Article strips much of the page’s formatting and layout. Full Page keeps a static copy with the original format and navigational elements. Screenshot captures a static image that can be cropped and annotated. Selection saves text or pictures selected before opening the clipper. PDFs and filing
When a PDF is open in the browser, Evernote’s PDF mode saves the entire document as an attachment in a new Evernote note. The guide says this mode is unavailable in Firefox because of browser restrictions. This is a PDF attachment workflow, not a documented way to export an ordinary webpage clip as a PDF. Evernote clips can be filed in notebooks with tags and remarks.
When a clip looks wrong
Evernote’s troubleshooting guidance says complex designs, interactive content, or multimedia such as audio and video may make a page clip incorrectly or appear differently than expected. It recommends trying another format, manually selecting the content, or using Screenshot. It also advises checking conditions such as third-party cookies and ad blockers. These are vendor troubleshooting suggestions, not a diagnosis of every failed clip. The guidance was updated March 14, 2025: Evernote Web Clipper troubleshooting.

OneNote Web Clipper: editable article versus screenshot
Microsoft documents Article as capturing editable text and images, with preview controls for highlighting and text presentation. Full Page and Region capture the selected content as screenshot images. Microsoft says those screenshot options preserve content as it appears; that description applies to Full Page and Region, not to Article or PDF capture.

For a PDF, Microsoft’s guide describes opening the document, choosing PDF Document, selecting a page range, and saving those pages to a OneNote notebook section. PDF quality: what can—and cannot—be concluded
A Microsoft Q&A thread dated May 6, 2017 reported low-quality, unreadable PDF clipping in Chrome. A responder said a fix was under review at that time. That old report does not establish a current defect, current output quality, or behavior in other browsers. The official product guides explain workflows and restrictions but do not provide a current, controlled comparison of PDF readability.
For a PDF you need to read or cite, inspect the saved result before relying on it: confirm the intended pages are present and the text is legible at normal zoom. If appearance is more important than selectable text, a screenshot mode may be appropriate for visible page content, but it is not equivalent to a readable PDF attachment or editable text.

Choosing a workflow
- Choose an article mode when you want searchable, editable text and can tolerate some layout changes.
- Choose a screenshot or full-page visual mode when preserving how a visible page looks matters more than editing its text.
- Choose a selection or region when you only need a passage or part of a page.
- Choose a bookmark when retaining the source URL is enough.
- For browser-opened PDFs, check the documented workflow and browser restriction first. Evernote’s documented PDF capture is a whole-document attachment and is unavailable in Firefox; OneNote describes selecting a PDF page range.
How to troubleshoot a poor or incomplete clip
- Identify the output you actually need. If the clip must be editable, start with Article; if fidelity to the visible page matters, try a screenshot-based option.
- Change capture mode. For Evernote, try Article, Simplified Article, or Full Page, or select the material manually before opening the clipper.
- Check whether the page relies on dynamic content. Interactive elements and multimedia can affect extraction. If the needed content is visible, a screenshot may preserve it better than article extraction.
- Check browser-specific availability. Evernote’s browser-opened PDF capture is documented as unavailable in Firefox. Do not assume every format works in every browser.
- Review the saved result before depending on it. Confirm the content, page range, and legibility in the destination notebook.
- Check the clipper’s troubleshooting conditions. Evernote specifically calls out third-party cookies and ad blockers among conditions to review.

How strong is the comparison?
The documented workflows support a practical comparison of output types, selection controls, destinations, and the stated PDF restriction. They do not establish which clipper currently produces the most faithful result, has the fewest failures, or makes the most readable PDFs across browsers. The historical 2017 OneNote complaint is not a present-day performance test.
