A screenshot API can preserve what a webpage looked like when it rendered, but an image is not a replayable web archive. For a visual record, capture a screenshot; when you need the page’s content and resources preserved for future replay, save a standards-based web archive as well. The two outputs serve different purposes.
Screenshot or web archive: which do you need?
A screenshot is a visual record of a rendered page at a particular moment. It is useful for visual reference, comparison, and evidence of appearance, but it does not preserve the underlying page and resources in a form intended to replay the site.

A web archive collects web content and resources for preservation and, where supported, replay. The Library of Congress recommends non-proprietary output that conforms to standard formats and requirements. Its web archiving guidance prefers WARC with record-at-a-time GZIP compression and also identifies ARC_IA and WACZ as acceptable alternatives. Library of Congress web archiving guidance

| Output | What it records | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot image | The rendered appearance of a page or selected area at capture time | Visual reference, documentation, or a record of appearance |
| WARC | Web content and resources collected as archive records | Preservation and replay-oriented archiving; preferred by the Library of Congress guidance |
| ARC_IA | Web archive records in an Internet Archive format described by the Library of Congress as a precursor to WARC | An acceptable archive-format alternative where supported |
| WACZ | A web archive format used in the Webrecorder project | An acceptable alternative where supported by the archiving workflow |
CDX is a component file used with WARC file content, not a screenshot format or an interchangeable preservation package. Choose the output based on whether you need an image, collected web resources, or both.

How to capture a page and archive it responsibly
- Decide what the record must prove. If the need is how the page appeared, capture a screenshot. If it must support preservation or future replay, create a web archive in a suitable standard format too.
- Render the page in a browser. Browser automation is appropriate for a rendered visual snapshot. Playwright supports viewport screenshots, full-page screenshots, element screenshots, and image buffers through
page.screenshot(). See the Playwright screenshot documentation. - Choose screenshot scope deliberately. Capture the viewport for the visible screen, full page when the whole scrollable page matters, or a selected element when only one component is relevant. Save the image or buffer in the form your recordkeeping process expects.
- Create the web archive separately when preservation matters. Use a capture tool that produces non-proprietary output conforming to applicable standards; the Library of Congress guidance prefers WARC with record-at-a-time GZIP compression and lists ARC_IA and WACZ as acceptable alternatives. A screenshot API’s image or PDF response should not be treated as a WARC unless it explicitly produces that format.
- Record the context. Document who or which institution operated the capture and the date and time. State what archived functionality differs from the live site, rather than implying that the archive behaves exactly like it.
- Check for gaps. Confirm what the capture actually contains, especially for pages with media, interactive features, or content behind access boundaries.
Where web capture can fall short
Neither a screenshot nor an archive guarantees a complete record of every element a person could access on the live site. The Library of Congress warns that currently available tools cannot capture all web content and specifically names multimedia-rich content, streaming media, deep web content, and databases as areas that may not be preservable through web capture. Its guidance on capture limitations
- A screenshot shows only what rendered in the captured view; it does not itself supply the collected resources needed for replay.
- An archive may omit or fail to reproduce content that capture tools cannot reach or preserve.
- Dynamic content can differ between visits, so record the capture time and describe the scope of what was captured.
For an important record, preserve the archive and the screenshot as distinct artifacts, and describe their respective limits.

Check whether a public Wayback snapshot already exists
Before making a new capture, you can check whether the Internet Archive has an accessible snapshot of the URL. Its Availability API is intended to find the closest available snapshot; the CDX API supports more complex capture queries, filtering, and analysis. These are lookup tools for public archive records, not substitutes for creating and retaining your own capture. Internet Archive Wayback APIs
Or skip the browser setup
For an automated visual capture without setting up browser automation, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in a GET request and returns a screenshot or PDF. This example saves a WebP screenshot of a page:

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These are visual captures, not a replacement for a WARC or other web archive when preservation and replay matter.

Can I use a screenshot as proof of what a site contained?
It can document the page’s visible appearance at capture time, but it does not establish that all underlying content or resources were preserved. Record the capture context and use a web archive as well when preservation is the goal.

Does full-page capture make a screenshot a web archive?
No. Full-page capture changes how much of the rendered page is shown in an image; it does not turn that image into an archive of the page’s web resources.
What if a Wayback lookup finds no snapshot?
The cited Availability API checks for an accessible existing snapshot, while CDX supports more detailed queries. A lookup result is not a guarantee that the page has never been captured or that all capture records are accessible.
