Before automating a publisher’s site—or keeping or sharing a capture—check that site’s current terms: the ability to render a page does not by itself grant permission to automate access or reuse its content.
What you need
- An MCP-compatible AI client that can connect to an MCP server.
- Node.js 20 or newer, listed by Playwright’s setup documentation.
- The specific news-page URL and a reason to capture it that is consistent with the publisher’s terms.
Playwright MCP is a documented way to connect an AI client to a browser. Its setup example uses npx @playwright/mcp@latest; the exact place to enter server configuration varies by client. Follow the setup instructions for your chosen client and Playwright MCP: Playwright MCP documentation.

Capture a news page with Playwright MCP
- Check the publisher’s rules. Read the current terms for the particular site and check whether it offers an authorized API, feed, widget, or embed for your use.
- Configure the MCP server. Add Playwright MCP to your MCP client using its setup guidance and confirm that the client can connect to the browser server.
- Navigate to the page. Ask the agent to open the exact article URL. If the site presents a consent dialog, sign-in, or other access control, do not assume that bypassing it is permitted.
- Inspect structure before interacting. Ask the agent for an accessibility snapshot to locate page content and controls. Refresh the snapshot after navigation or meaningful page changes; references from an earlier page state may be stale.
- Choose the screenshot scope and save it. Ask for the visible viewport, a particular element, or the full scrollable page, and specify the output format and scale as needed. Save the returned image only for an authorized purpose.

An accessibility snapshot represents page structure in a form the agent can inspect to find content and interactive elements. A screenshot records visual appearance; it is not the right representation for identifying controls to operate. Playwright’s documentation puts it plainly: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on.” Use a fresh snapshot to locate elements, then take a screenshot when you need a visual record.

Check publisher terms before automating or reusing a capture
There is no single rule established here for every Indian news website. The reviewed examples differ, and their terms may change; check the target publisher’s current terms and any separate conditions for APIs, feeds, widgets, or embeds.
- Hindustan Times’ terms describe personal, non-commercial viewing and sharing, restrict copying or republication beyond permitted service features, and restrict bots and similar automated access.
- The Indian Express’ terms prohibit automated tools for accessing or extracting content and address storage, AI uses, and circumvention of protective measures.
- LiveMint’s terms restrict automated access, describe a personal, non-commercial viewing licence, and refer to separate conditions for APIs, feeds, widgets, and embeds.
These examples do not determine whether a particular capture for personal research, accessibility, reporting, or another purpose is allowed. Nor does a screenshot workflow settle whether storing, sharing, training on, or republishing its contents is permitted. The Government of India Copyright Office’s copyright handbook describes conditional fair-dealing exceptions including research, study, criticism, review, and news reporting; it is general background, not a legal conclusion about a specific screenshot or contract.

Troubleshooting
- The MCP client cannot connect: Confirm that Node.js 20 or newer is installed, that the client’s server configuration follows its own documented format, and that the configured Playwright MCP command can start.
- The agent cannot find a control: Request a new accessibility snapshot after navigation or page changes. Do not rely on references from an old snapshot.
- The image misses content below the fold: Use full-page capture rather than a viewport screenshot, unless you specifically need only the visible view.
- You need one region and the full page: The documented screenshot options do not combine full-page capture with an element target. Capture the element separately or take a full-page image and crop it afterward if permitted.
- The page shows a consent prompt or access restriction: Follow the publisher’s instructions and terms. Do not treat a technical workaround as authorization to evade restrictions.
