Weaponizing a CVSS 10.0 PoC: Building a Zero-Touch RSC Recon Engine with GitHub Copilot

Anuththara Wickramasekara describes using GitHub Copilot to build a Chrome extension for RSC reconnaissance. Here is what the reported signals can—and cannot—establish, alongside React’s React2Shell advisories.

Anuththara Wickramasekara’s project write-up describes turning a Python proof of concept into a Manifest V3 Chrome extension for React Server Components (RSC) reconnaissance, with GitHub Copilot assisting during development. The project is a report of a detection approach—not independent proof that the extension identifies vulnerable deployments or that its active probe is safe. The distinction matters because CVE-2025-55182, known as React2Shell, was a critical unauthenticated remote-code-execution vulnerability, while identifying RSC in a browser is not the same as confirming that a server is vulnerable.

What CVE-2025-55182 affected

On December 3, 2025, the React Team disclosed CVE-2025-55182, also called React2Shell, and rated it CVSS 10.0. The flaw was in decoding payloads sent to React Server Function endpoints and could allow unauthenticated remote code execution. React said the issue was reported on November 29, 2025, and that a fix was published to npm when the vulnerability was disclosed. React’s advisory identifies the affected packages and update instructions.

The named packages were react-server-dom-webpack, react-server-dom-parcel, and react-server-dom-turbopack. The initially vulnerable versions were 19.0, 19.1.0, 19.1.1, and 19.2.0; the initial fixes were 19.0.1, 19.1.2, and 19.2.1. Those version numbers describe the first fixes, not a complete current remediation recommendation.

The issue did not affect every React application. React’s advisory scopes exposure to applications using a server with an RSC-capable framework, bundler, or plugin. It also warns that an application could be vulnerable by supporting RSC even if it did not implement its own React Server Function endpoints.

How the reported recon engine works

The article describes a Chrome extension called “RSC Fingerprint Detector,” built as a Manifest V3 project to collect passive and active telemetry related to RSC and the React2Shell vulnerability class. Its design is best understood as reconnaissance: the described signals may indicate RSC-related technology, but they do not establish that a particular deployed package version is vulnerable.

Passive indicators

For passive detection, the author says the extension looks for browser-visible clues such as window.__next_f, script asset names containing react-server-dom-webpack, data-rsc DOM attributes, and response headers. These clues can help flag a site for further review. The write-up does not independently validate their accuracy, completeness, or ability to distinguish patched from vulnerable deployments.

Active probing

The article also describes an asynchronous cross-origin fetch using a crafted X-RSC-Probe header, followed by parsing of the response content type. That is an active network request, not merely observation of the page. The available account does not establish that the request is harmless, avoids security alerts, or reliably confirms exposure. Do not treat a detector response as authorization to test a system or as a substitute for the operator’s patch and configuration review.

Extension architecture

According to the author, the project replaces a synchronous Python snippet with an event-driven extension and adds IndexedDB persistence, cross-context messaging, and a Shadow DOM-isolated interface. Those implementation choices explain the reported engineering direction; they do not by themselves demonstrate production readiness or detection quality.

What GitHub Copilot contributed, according to the author

The write-up says Copilot assisted with Manifest V3 boilerplate, asynchronous messaging, IndexedDB, and network interception. It does not report a benchmark, independent code review, or controlled test establishing a productivity gain or a security improvement. Copilot’s involvement is therefore part of the author’s development account, not evidence that the extension is accurate or safe.

Why the initial patch versions are not the last word

After the December 3 disclosure, React published a further RSC security advisory on December 11, 2025, updated January 26, 2026, covering additional denial-of-service and source-code-exposure issues and later patch guidance. See React’s follow-up advisory. This means upgrading only to the initial React2Shell fixes may not satisfy the applicable current guidance.

React’s advisories name frameworks and bundlers including Next.js, React Router, Waku, @parcel/rsc, @vitejs/plugin-rsc, and rwsdk. Their release lines and remediation steps are not interchangeable with the React package versions listed above. The React Team’s December 3 advisory says, “We recommend upgrading immediately.” Follow its framework-specific instructions and the later advisory’s guidance for the versions and release line you actually use; check the advisories directly because supported releases and fixes can change.

What a browser detector can—and cannot—tell you

  • It can support reconnaissance: page assets, DOM markers, and observed headers may suggest that RSC-related components are present.
  • It cannot prove vulnerability from presence alone: a framework or RSC fingerprint does not reveal the exact server-side package version or confirm whether the deployment is patched.
  • An active probe needs authorization: the project write-up does not independently establish its effects or safety, so do not assume that a cross-origin request is invisible or risk-free.
  • Remediation should be verified at the source: identify the framework and release line in the application’s dependency and deployment records, then apply the official React or framework-specific update instructions.
