laya-router’s author reports an estimated 54.9% lower LLM cost than always using the frontier tier in the project’s published 180-prompt backtest. The proxy makes each routing decision locally, so there is no API charge for the decision itself; the selected upstream model can still incur inference charges. The result is a project-reported estimate—not an independently validated saving or a guarantee for other workloads.
What laya-router does
laya-router is an open-source, OpenAI-compatible proxy. Instead of having an application call an upstream model directly, you point its API base URL at the local proxy. The proxy chooses a configured lower-cost or frontier model tier, then sends the request upstream.

Its documented routing path combines a regex fast path for trivial prompts with a local laya decision model. The decision model classifies a request as simple, standard, or complex and returns a confidence score. A confidence gate can escalate complex, unknown, or low-confidence requests rather than sending them to the cheaper tier.

What the 54.9% figure measures
The laya-router author reports a 54.9% estimated cost reduction against an always-frontier baseline in a published backtest of 180 prompts. The same test reports that 80.6% of prompts were routed to the cheap tier. These are results from the project’s test, not a general benchmark of LLM routers.
The backtest used 80 MT-Bench questions and 100 synthetic trivial prompts. Both tiers answered each prompt, and one blind judge compared their answers. The repository reports results for one model pair and notes judge noise on trivial prompts and too few prompts in the middle difficulty band. A workload dominated by difficult requests could yield little or no saving; the author cautions, “If your prompts are all hard, you will save nothing.” The author’s write-up and the project repository describe the estimate and test.

Cost savings come with an answer-quality trade-off
For prompts routed to the cheap tier, the repository reports 28 wins, 87 ties, and 30 losses in its comparison against the frontier-tier answers. It summarizes that as 79.3% cheap-tier win-or-tie precision. That figure applies to the project’s judged sample; it does not establish how often cheaper answers will be acceptable for your users or tasks.
The routing threshold changes the balance between savings and caution. In the repository’s simulated comparison, the default confidence threshold produced about 46% estimated savings and about 72% cheap-tier routes. With the confidence gate off, the reported figures were 54.9% savings and 80.6% cheap-tier routes. The less cautious setting sends more prompts to the cheap tier, but the backtest’s quality results are not a guarantee for production traffic.

Latency and operational behavior
The repository reports warm routing latency of 460 ms at p50, 1.4 seconds at p95, and 2.7 seconds at p99 for its included AMD64 benchmark on 179 prompts. These are project-published measurements, not independent results, and routing time is additional work in the request path.
The project says routing failures return a structured 503 response instead of silently falling back to the frontier tier. Response headers expose the selected route, model, confidence, and reason, which can help with monitoring and diagnosis. The repository documents Prometheus metrics and optional JSONL decision logs.

How to judge whether it fits your traffic
The published estimate is most useful as a reason to run a workload-specific evaluation, not as a forecast. Before routing production requests, measure both spend and answer acceptability across a representative sample of your own prompts.
Quick Recap
- Include the actual mix of routine, moderate, and difficult requests; the published test had relatively few middle-band prompts.
- Compare the cheaper and frontier tiers using tasks and quality criteria that matter to your users, rather than relying on one judge’s aggregate result.
- Track the share routed to each tier, estimated cost, escalation rate, latency percentiles, and routing failures.
- Try the confidence gate and threshold settings against the same sample, then choose the balance between savings and escalation that meets your quality requirements.
- Account for upstream inference charges and the cost of running and operating the local proxy; only the routing decision itself is reported as having no API charge.
