To build an accessible ecommerce product page with WCAG 2.2, assess the entire rendered page—not just the product details or add-to-cart area—at every responsive layout you provide. Set a conformance target, make product information and image alternatives meaningful, check keyboard operation and focus visibility, then evaluate the finished page against all applicable criteria for that level.
What WCAG 2.2 means for a product page
WCAG 2.2 became a W3C Recommendation on 5 October 2023. It added nine success criteria compared with WCAG 2.1 and removed Success Criterion 4.1.1, Parsing. See the W3C summary of what changed in WCAG 2.2.

WCAG groups its requirements under four principles: content must be perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. These principles provide a useful way to organize a product-page review, but visual resemblance to an accessible design is not proof of conformance. Use the WCAG 2.2 Quick Reference to find criteria and techniques. Techniques are examples, not mandatory implementations; the normative standard defines the requirements.
Set the page scope and conformance target
First identify the complete page that shoppers use: shared navigation, product gallery, product details, variant choices, quantity input, purchase controls, notices, overlays, and footer. A product-detail component can be reviewed on its own during development, but it cannot establish that the full page conforms.

WCAG conformance is assessed for full pages, and each responsive variation of a page must conform. Choose the conformance level—Level A, AA, or AAA—and evaluate all criteria applicable to that level. Level AA includes all Level A and Level AA criteria. AAA is a higher level, but WCAG does not generally recommend requiring it across an entire site because some content cannot satisfy every AAA criterion. The WCAG 2.2 conformance requirements define these scope and level rules.
Make product information perceivable
Check that essential shopping information is available to users, not conveyed only by appearance. Review the product name, price, selected options, availability, and important purchase conditions, along with how the page expresses relationships among them. Apply the relevant WCAG criteria rather than treating visual similarity as evidence that the information is accessible.

Choose image alternatives by purpose
For each image, decide whether it informs, decorates, or performs a function. The alternative should serve the image’s purpose; one generic description repeated across meaningful product views may fail to convey what distinguishes those views.
- Informative image: Provide an alternative that conveys the essential information shoppers need from that image, such as a meaningful visible feature or detail.
- Decorative image: If the image adds no information and serves no function, use an empty text alternative so it does not create unnecessary noise.
- Functional image: If the image acts as a control, describe the control’s function rather than merely what the image looks like.

Check keyboard operation and focus visibility
Move through the page using a keyboard and inspect the gallery controls, option selectors, quantity controls, purchase button, and any dialogs or notifications. Focus should remain visible as it moves from one control to the next. Pay particular attention to sticky headers, promotional banners, and fixed footers that may cover controls during scrolling.
WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.4.11, Focus Not Obscured (Minimum), is a Level AA requirement: “When a user interface component receives keyboard focus, the component is not entirely hidden due to author-created content.” The criterion and its details are in the WCAG 2.2 text for SC 2.4.11. If a sticky element or overlay hides a focused control, adjust the layout, scrolling, or sticky behavior so the control remains at least partly visible while interaction remains usable.

- Identify the complete page. Include shared site elements and all product-page content, controls, notices, and overlays.
- Set the conformance level. State whether the target is Level A, AA, or AAA; for Level AA, include all applicable Level A and AA criteria.
- Review the content and images. Check that key product information is perceivable and that each image alternative matches its informative, decorative, or functional purpose.
- Navigate by keyboard. Operate the page controls and check whether sticky content or overlays entirely hide any focused component.
- Check responsive variations. Evaluate the full page at the layouts offered for different screen sizes, not only the desktop view or an isolated component.
- Assess all applicable criteria. Use the Quick Reference to locate criteria and examples, but base any conformance claim on the normative requirements and the completed page.
A checklist can help organize this work, but it cannot establish compliance by itself. No particular storefront can be said to pass without evaluating its completed page and responsive variations against the chosen conformance level. “Designed with WCAG 2.2 in mind” is not the same as verified conformance. WCAG guidance also does not determine which laws apply to a merchant or provide jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
