Waymo combines an automated driving system with human Rider Support and roadside assistance. Uber and Lyft rely on human drivers and offer app-based tools for emergency calls, trip monitoring, and support. Each model provides ways to seek help, but the official information cited here does not prove that Waymo is safer than Uber or Lyft drivers in a direct, like-for-like comparison.
How the safety models differ
| Safety area | Waymo | Uber and Lyft examples |
|---|---|---|
| Who drives | The automated Waymo Driver operates the vehicle during a fully autonomous ride. | A human driver operates the vehicle. |
| Road awareness | Waymo describes using lidar, cameras, radar, and external audio receivers. It says the audio receivers help detect sounds such as sirens and railroad crossings. | The cited Uber materials describe app sensors and GPS for possible incident or route detection—not an automated vehicle-driving system. |
| Emergency contact | Riders can contact Rider Support through the in-car passenger screen or app. A detected collision can also prompt Support to contact the rider. | Uber’s Emergency Button calls 911; Lyft describes app-based emergency help involving ADT. Availability and integrations depend on location. |
| Incident detection | Waymo says a detected collision notifies Support, which contacts the rider, dispatches roadside assistance, and contacts emergency services. | Uber RideCheck may detect a possible crash, unusual stop, or route change and prompt the rider and driver to check in. |
| Personal security and documentation | The passenger screen can request help and lock the doors. Waymo says cabin audio is not recorded unless a rider speaks with Support. | Uber lists trip sharing, PIN verification, GPS tracking, optional audio recording, and 24/7 safety support. Lyft’s cited rider page describes app-based emergency pathways. |
These features address different risks. Vehicle sensing and driving are not the same as help after a crash or during a personal-security emergency. In either model, an app or automated system is a route to assistance—not a guarantee of a particular response time or outcome.

What happens if a Waymo has a collision or stops?
Waymo says that when its vehicle detects a collision, Rider Support is notified and contacts the rider through the in-car speakers or the rider’s phone. The rider can also start a call from the passenger screen or app. Waymo says it can dispatch roadside assistance and contact emergency services. See Waymo Help’s collision and security guidance.
If the vehicle pulls over or stops because the system judges that to be safest, Waymo advises riders to stay inside with seat belts fastened and contact Support. Roadside assistance can be sent if needed. For an immediate personal-security threat, call 911; Waymo says its app’s 911 button also sends an urgent notification to Support, which may call into the car. The passenger screen can request help and lock the doors.

Waymo explicitly cautions that its vehicles cannot avoid or prevent every collision, and that collisions can cause injury or death. Automation and support do not eliminate crash risk.
How Uber and Lyft route riders to help
Uber: 911 button, RideCheck, and rider tools
Uber’s in-app Emergency Button calls 911 and displays live location and trip details for the dispatcher. Uber says automatic sharing of those details is available in a growing number of U.S. cities, so riders should not assume the feature works the same way everywhere. Its rider safety page also lists trip sharing, PIN verification, GPS tracking, and 24/7 safety support.

Time Lapse Parking Mode provides continuous surveillance by offering a condensed overview of any events that may occur during parking periods. *Please note that the parking monitoring function requires a separate hardwire kit.
RideCheck uses sensors and GPS to help identify possible crashes or unusual route changes, then prompts the rider and driver to check in. It is an anomaly-checking feature, not a claim that Uber’s app drives or controls the vehicle. Uber introduced RideCheck as a way to connect riders with help when needed; see its RideCheck announcement.

Uber audio recording is optional and location-dependent
Uber offers optional in-trip audio recording in some locations. Uber says recordings are encrypted and inaccessible to the company unless submitted with an incident report; recording notices and applicable laws vary. This is not continuous listening by Uber. Details are on Uber’s audio-recording page.

Lyft: app emergency help and location-specific partner support
Lyft says riders can request emergency help in the app through ADT. ADT contacts the rider for details and, if there is no answer, contacts 911 with location details. Lyft also describes a RapidSOS live-agent pilot in Canada; its page says that live-agent capability is not available in Puerto Rico, where a 911 feature remains available. These are page-specific descriptions, not a guarantee that every Lyft trip has identical partner support. Check Lyft’s rider safety information and the options shown in the app for your trip.

The official materials cited here do not establish a direct, like-for-like safety ranking between Waymo and rideshare drivers. Waymo publishes comparisons against an average human-driver benchmark in its operating cities, but that is not the same as comparing its record with Uber or Lyft drivers.

Waymo’s Safety page reports 95% fewer serious-injury-or-worse crashes and 82% fewer airbag deployments in any-vehicle crashes than its stated average-human-driver comparison over the same distance in its operating cities. Those are company-published figures; the page material cited here did not show a publication date. Waymo also cites Swiss Re analysis reporting 92% fewer bodily-injury claims and 88% fewer property-damage claims over 25 million miles. Those are insurance-claims comparisons, not direct crash-rate comparisons with rideshare drivers.
Separately, Waymo reported nearly 200 million fully autonomous miles across more than 10 major cities in its February 12, 2026 announcement of the sixth-generation Waymo Driver. That was the company’s figure at the time of publication, not a current cumulative total. No comparable Uber or Lyft crash-rate figure is established by the official sources cited here, so these figures cannot support a numeric ranking of the services.
What to check before a trip
- Open the app’s safety or emergency options and confirm which tools are available for your location.
- For Uber, do not assume automatic sharing of trip and location details with 911 is available in every U.S. city.
- For Lyft, distinguish standard app emergency help from the Canada RapidSOS live-agent pilot and check the page or app for current local options.
- If immediate danger requires emergency services, call the local emergency number directly rather than relying only on an app feature.
Waymo’s vehicle sensors: what they do and do not mean
Waymo describes its Driver as using lidar, cameras, radar, and external audio receivers. In a February 12, 2026 engineering post, Waymo vice president of engineering Satish Jeyachandran said the receivers help the Driver detect important sounds, including approaching emergency vehicles and railroad crossings, and respond accordingly. These sensing capabilities are part of the driving system; they do not mean every emergency is resolved autonomously. Waymo’s own collision guidance describes human Rider Support and roadside assistance as part of its response.
