Strong account security and less exposed personal information can reduce opportunities for someone trying to target you with swatting, but no single step can guarantee it will not happen. Swatting is a malicious false report to emergency services, often intended to provoke a forceful response. Protect your accounts, limit public identifying details, make a household response plan, and know what to do if officers arrive. The reporting contacts below are specific to the United States.
How can personal information exposure increase swatting risk?
Information about your identity, home, phone number, routines, or household may make it easier for someone to target you or impersonate you. The FBI warns that seemingly ordinary images and videos can also be exploited or manipulated. Review what is visible on public profiles, old posts, shared content, and videos—not only information you deliberately wrote in a bio. The FBI’s 2025 swatting alert recommends reviewing your online presence and considering resources that help remove sensitive information.

- Remove or limit public details such as your home address, phone number, and identifying information about household members.
- Check photos and videos for details that could identify your home or other personal information.
- Review older posts and shared material, including content posted by others that reveals information about you.
- Be cautious about messages asking for personal information. Details exposed online may also help someone answer account-recovery or security questions.
Removal tools and services are optional and limited: removing information from one place does not guarantee it is gone everywhere or prevent someone from targeting you.

Start with accounts that can unlock other accounts or expose sensitive information: your primary email, financial services, social media, and payment accounts. Then secure other accounts and connected devices, including smart-home devices. The FBI advises using strong, unique passwords and multifactor authentication (MFA) on devices and accounts. The FBI’s general online safety guidance also recommends unique passphrases, a reputable password manager, caution with requests for personal information, and regular software and app updates.

- Use a different password or passphrase for every account. A reputable password manager can help create and store unique credentials.
- Turn on MFA. MFA requires another credential in addition to your password. Start with your email, financial, social media, and payment accounts, as recommended by the FTC.
- Choose a stronger second factor where available. Prefer an authenticator app or hardware security key over text-message codes. Accounts do not all support the same methods; if SMS or email codes are the only option, they are better than having no second factor.
- Protect connected devices. Change default or reused credentials on smart-home devices, enable MFA where offered, and keep device software and apps updated. The FBI Phoenix guidance on smart devices emphasizes device security as part of swatting prevention.
- Keep account recovery methods current and protected. Limit information that could help someone answer recovery questions, and make sure you can still access recovery options if you lose a phone or key.
A security key can be a useful optional MFA method for accounts that support it, but it does not prevent someone from making a malicious emergency call. Consider how you would recover access if the key is lost before relying on it as your only second factor.
Can a SIM swap let someone take over your accounts?
Yes. In a SIM swap, an attacker gets control of your phone number. That can expose text-message verification codes or password-reset messages sent to the number. The FTC explains the risk and recommends adding a PIN or password to your cellular account and using an authenticator app or security key instead of SMS where available. See the FTC’s SIM-swap guidance.

- SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
- Set a PIN or password on your mobile-carrier account.
- Use a non-SMS MFA option on important accounts when available.
- If your phone unexpectedly loses service and you suspect a SIM swap, contact your carrier immediately to regain control of the number.
- After regaining access, change passwords for affected accounts and check financial accounts for unauthorized activity.
How should your household prepare?
Discuss swatting with people in your household, including what it is and how to respond if law enforcement arrives. Agree on a calm, practical plan so everyone knows to follow officers’ directions and cooperate. The FBI’s alert advises people who are targeted to stay calm and cooperate with responding law enforcement.
For election workers and law-enforcement agencies, the 2024 CISA swatting prevention and response guidance offers prevention and planning recommendations. Its stated audience is narrower than the general public, but household preparation remains a useful part of personal safety planning.

- Follow officers’ instructions. Avoid sudden movements and do what responding officers ask.
- Preserve information related to the incident. Keep relevant usernames, email addresses, websites, platform names, photos, and videos.
- Report the incident to local law enforcement. Share the information you preserved.
- Use federal reporting channels when appropriate. In the United States, the FBI alert lists tips.fbi.gov, 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324), and local FBI field offices for leads, threats, or criminal activity. Call 911 for an emergency or immediate threat to life.
