Wayland changes how a Linux desktop session displays and manages windows; it does not automatically make your existing X11 applications unusable. In a Wayland session, older X11 apps can often run through Xwayland, while the compositor—the desktop’s central display and window-management component—handles the session. Whether you can still choose an X11 login depends on your distribution, desktop environment and release.
What are Wayland and X11?
X11 is an older window-system architecture. Wayland is a protocol: it defines how graphical applications communicate with a compositor, which manages windows and presents their contents. Wayland does not specify one universal desktop; the details users see depend on the compositor and desktop environment. The Wayland project’s introduction describes the protocol and compositor roles.

That distinction matters when comparing sessions. The practical experience is shaped not just by the protocol, but by the desktop that implements it and the applications and tools you use.

Usually, many legacy X11 applications can run using Xwayland. Xwayland acts as an X server for those apps and connects them to the Wayland compositor, so X11 and native Wayland windows can appear together in one session. An app running this way remains an X11 client; Xwayland does not turn it into a native Wayland application. The Wayland project’s Xwayland documentation explains this compatibility arrangement.

Compatibility is substantial, but it is not identical behavior. Some window-system features and integrations may differ, and an X11 window manager generally cannot run as a separate manager alongside the Wayland compositor. For a particular app or workflow, check the documentation for your distribution, desktop and software rather than assuming every X11 behavior carries over. The Wayland FAQ provides further background on sessions, compositors and legacy clients.
What changes when you log in?
- The compositor is central. In a Wayland session, the compositor manages windows and displays their contents. Desktop behavior therefore varies by implementation.
- Applications may use different paths. Some run natively as Wayland clients; legacy X11 applications may use Xwayland. You may have both kinds open at once.
- Your session choices can change. The X11 option is not guaranteed to remain available just because an older release offered it. Availability depends on the distribution, desktop environment and release.
These are architecture and availability changes, not a basis for assuming Wayland is universally faster, more secure or better for every user. The cited project material does not provide a broad, directly comparable performance or security test.

Is Wayland replacing the X server?
In some distributions and desktops, the Wayland session is becoming the default or the only session for that desktop; elsewhere, an X.org session may remain available. For example, Ubuntu’s 26.04 LTS release notes say Ubuntu Desktop is Wayland-only following a change in Ubuntu 25.10, while other sessions—including KDE on X11, Xfce, MATE and i3—can still be launched using an X.org session.

KDE contributor David Edmundson wrote on June 2, 2026, that Plasma 6.7 was being prepared as the final X11-supported Plasma release, with Plasma 6.8 planned to be Wayland-only. That is a project plan and may change; distribution packaging and release timing can differ. The same post reported KDE internal metrics showing more than 95% of Plasma 6.6 users on Wayland. That figure describes Plasma 6.6 users in KDE’s metrics, not Linux desktop users overall. Edmundson’s Planet KDE post gives the roadmap and figure.

How to decide which session to use
- Check what your system offers. Look at your distribution’s release notes and login screen to see whether an X.org or Wayland session is available for your installed desktop. Do not infer the current choices from an older release.
- Identify the apps and features you rely on. Check whether critical applications run natively on Wayland or via Xwayland, and verify any specific integrations or tools you depend on. General compatibility information cannot certify every application, driver, screen-capture tool or accessibility feature.
- Test the workflow, not just the desktop. If both sessions are offered, try the relevant apps and tasks in the session you intend to use. Pay particular attention to workflows that depend on an X11-specific window manager or desktop integration.
- Keep a fallback if the workflow is uncertain. If your distribution still offers an X.org session and a required task does not work as expected in Wayland, you can use that session while checking for application, compositor or distribution guidance.
The meaningful comparison is whether your system still offers each session, whether your required software works natively or through Xwayland, and whether you depend on X11-specific components—not an assumption that one session behaves identically across all Linux desktops.
