If you misplaced your phone, start with its built-in locator: use Google Find Hub for Android or Apple Find My for iPhone. To retrace where an Android phone has been, check Google Maps Timeline in the Google Account used on that phone—but Timeline only helps if the relevant location data was recorded and is still accessible. It is a history, not a live locator.
History or live location: which tool should you use?
| Tool | Platform | What it can show | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Maps Timeline | Android / Google Account | Recorded past places or routes, when the relevant data exists | Retrace where you went around the time the phone went missing |
| Google Find Hub | Android | Current or last-known device position, when available | View the map, play a sound, mark the phone as lost, or erase it |
| Apple Find My | iPhone | Current or last-known device position, when available | View the map, mark the phone as lost, or erase it |
Timeline and device-finding services solve different problems. Timeline may help answer “Where was I?” Find Hub and Find My are for locating the phone now or checking its last-known position. A map pin is an estimate, not proof that the phone is at that exact point.

How to retrace an Android phone’s location with Google Maps Timeline
- Open Google Maps Timeline using the Google Account associated with the missing phone.
- Choose the date when you last remember having the phone, then review recorded places, addresses, or routes and their times.
- Use those stops to retrace your movements and check likely places such as a shop, workplace, or route you travelled.
This works only if location records for the relevant date were enabled, recorded, and retained. Make sure you are checking the correct Google Account. Google’s Android guidance describes using Timeline to retrace locations, addresses, and times (Android: How to find my phone), while Google explains how to manage Timeline data (Google Account Help: Manage your Timeline data).
Timeline storage and access can vary. Google announced that Timeline is saved on the device for users receiving the change, with an optional encrypted cloud backup that Google says it cannot read (Google’s Timeline and Location History update). Check the Timeline interface on the phone if available; do not assume the history can be viewed from the web or another device.

Locate an Android phone with Google Find Hub
- Open Google Find Hub in a browser, or open the Find Hub app on another Android device.
- Sign in with the Google Account associated with the missing phone and select the device.
- Review the map for its current or last-known position, if one is available.
- If the phone may be nearby, use the sound option. Google says the device rings at full volume for five minutes.
- If you cannot recover it promptly, consider marking it as lost to secure it. Use erase only after considering the consequences.
Remote finding and actions depend on the phone and account meeting Google’s conditions. The device generally needs power, a Google Account, Find Hub enabled, and visibility on Google Play; network and account conditions can also affect what is available. Google explains these requirements and actions in its Find, secure or erase a lost Android device guidance.
Google estimates location using sources such as GPS, nearby Wi-Fi, and mobile networks. GPS may be inaccurate indoors or underground, so treat the pin as a lead rather than an exact address. Erasing permanently deletes device data; after a factory reset, the phone is no longer available in Find Hub.

Locate and protect an iPhone with Find My
- Open the Find My app on another Apple device, select the missing iPhone, and view its map.
- If you do not have another Apple device, go to iCloud.com/find and sign in with the Apple Account associated with the iPhone.
- Mark the iPhone as lost when appropriate. Lost Mode locks it and can display contact details.
- Consider erasing only if the circumstances justify it; erasing cannot be undone.
Apple says Find My can display a last-known location for up to seven days when it cannot show a current location. After more than seven days without a location sent through the Find My network, it may show “No location found.” If a device is online but unable to send its location, it may show “Not sharing location • Online.” See Apple’s Use Find My to locate your lost Apple device or AirTag instructions.

What to do if the location is uncertain or recovery fails
- Use the displayed location as a clue and check likely nearby places; signal conditions and indoor or underground settings can make an estimate inaccurate.
- If the phone appears to be somewhere suspicious and theft is possible, do not confront anyone. Secure the device or account and contact local authorities as appropriate.
- Prefer locking or marking the device lost before erasing it when circumstances allow. Erasure is irreversible on iPhone, and on Android a factory-reset device can no longer be found in Find Hub.
Prevent the next misplaced-phone scramble
Check that the relevant location-history and device-finding features are configured while the phone is in your possession, and confirm you can access the associated Google or Apple Account. A Bluetooth tracker attached to a phone case can help locate the case as a personal item, but it cannot reconstruct the phone’s past location history or recover history that was never recorded. Apple documents AirTag as a tracker for personal items (Apple Find My Support).
