Wave 1 Wi‑Fi: What the 802.11ac Certification Means

Wave 1 Wi‑Fi means the first Wi‑Fi Alliance certification profile for 802.11ac, or Wi‑Fi 5. It was a subset of the technology’s features, not a separate standard.

Wave 1 Wi‑Fi is the Wi‑Fi Alliance’s first certification profile for 802.11ac, the technology also known as Wi‑Fi 5. It was an early, limited profile of the amendment’s features—not a separate wireless standard and not a promise that every 802.11ac device has the same capabilities.

What does Wave 1 Wi‑Fi mean?

IEEE 802.11ac defined the wireless technology; “Wave 1” described the first Wi‑Fi Alliance certification phase for products built around it. Cisco’s 2014 technical paper says that initial certification was based on a mature draft of 802.11ac, rather than the complete feature set eventually associated with the ratified amendment. Cisco’s 802.11ac technical white paper places the first Wave 1 certifications in mid-2013 and says the IEEE amendment was completed at the end of that year.

In short, 802.11ac and Wi‑Fi 5 refer to the broader technology, while Wave 1 identifies an early certification profile within it. The label is useful historical shorthand, but it does not fully specify a particular router’s hardware or features.

Which features did the Wave 1 profile include?

Cisco’s historical comparison describes Wave 1 as operating in the 5 GHz band, with mandatory support for 20, 40, and 80 MHz channel bandwidths. Other capabilities depended on device category or were optional; the profile should not be read as requiring every feature associated with 802.11ac.

  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Capability Wave 1 profile in Cisco’s 2014 comparison Later or potential Wave 2 profile in the comparison
Spectrum 5 GHz; available channels depend on the regulatory domain. The paper discusses the broader amendment’s sub-6 GHz spectrum excluding 2.4 GHz.
Channel bandwidth 20, 40, and 80 MHz mandatory. 160 MHz and 80+80 MHz optional.
Spatial streams Requirements varied by device category; the draft table described optional support up to three streams. The paper describes later certification possibilities up to four streams.
MU‑MIMO Not listed for Wave 1 in the comparison. Listed as optional for the later certification comparison.

These are descriptions of certification phases in a 2014 paper, not guarantees that every retail device marketed as 802.11ac implements each listed feature. For a particular router or client, check its own specifications.

How did Wave 1 differ from Wave 2?

Wave 2 extended the certification profile toward features that were optional or not listed for Wave 1 in Cisco’s comparison. The distinctions most relevant to the label are the availability of 160 MHz or 80+80 MHz channels, support for more spatial streams in the paper’s later-profile description, and optional MU‑MIMO.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

That comparison is a snapshot of the certification phases, not a rule that every Wave 2 device must have every capability or that every product labeled Wave 1 has identical hardware. The device’s specification sheet is the better guide when evaluating an individual feature.

Will a Wave 1 router work with older Wi‑Fi devices?

At the standard-design level, 802.11ac was intended to be backward compatible with 802.11a and 802.11n devices. That does not guarantee interoperability in every setup: the router, client, supported bands, configuration, and local regulatory constraints all matter.

  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

A device using an older Wi‑Fi standard may connect when the router supports the relevant compatibility mode and band, but it will communicate using capabilities both devices support. Cisco’s paper gives the design intent; it is not a compatibility guarantee for every router-client combination.

What should the label tell you when choosing a router?

“Wave 1” indicates an early 802.11ac certification profile, not a current performance rating or a complete list of a router’s features. The historical definition alone cannot determine whether a particular router is suitable today. Check the exact model’s supported bands, channel widths, spatial-stream configuration, and any feature you need, along with its current availability and fit for your network.
