If you control the recording, use a lossless format: FLAC when smaller transfers matter, or WAV containing PCM/LINEAR16 when your workflow calls for uncompressed audio. Use MP3 only when the specific voice AI service accepts it or when it is the best source you have. Before uploading, check the service’s exact endpoint and mode: accepted formats and audio settings vary.
How WAV, MP3 and FLAC differ
These labels do not all describe the same thing. WAV is a container; FLAC and MP3 describe audio encoding, and FLAC is also a file format. A file extension alone cannot tell you exactly how its audio is encoded.

| Format | What it is | What happens to audio data | Practical consideration for voice AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| WAV | A container that can hold different encodings; it commonly contains PCM/LINEAR16 for speech. | Depends on the encoding inside. PCM/LINEAR16 is lossless. | Check the actual encoding and service requirements, rather than relying on the .wav extension. Google documents WAV containing LINEAR16 or MULAW. Google Cloud’s encoding guide |
| FLAC | A lossless audio codec and file format. | Compresses without discarding source information. | Can reduce transfer size relative to uncompressed LINEAR16 while preserving audio data. Google says its bandwidth requirement is about half that of LINEAR16; actual file size depends on the recording. Google Cloud RecognitionConfig |
| MP3 | A lossy audio format. | Reduces size by discarding audio information that cannot be recovered by later conversion. | Some services accept it, but lossy encoding may affect recognition, especially if the recording also has noise or other quality problems. Google Cloud’s encoding guide |
So “WAV versus FLAC” is not simply “uncompressed versus compressed.” A WAV can contain PCM or another encoding; FLAC compression is lossless. Google Cloud recommends a lossless source when you control encoding, and Amazon Transcribe also recommends lossless options for its documented batch and streaming workflows.

Which format should you choose?
| Your situation | Good starting choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You are making a new recording and recognition quality is the priority | FLAC or WAV containing PCM/LINEAR16 | Meet the service’s sample-rate, bit-depth, channel and endpoint requirements. |
| File size or transmission bandwidth matters | FLAC | Google describes its bandwidth requirement as about half that of LINEAR16—not a guaranteed file-size ratio for every recording. |
| Your existing source is MP3 | Use it if the target service accepts MP3; otherwise convert from the best available source. | Converting MP3 to WAV does not restore data removed during MP3 encoding. |
| The service requires WAV/PCM or a particular raw-stream encoding | Use the required container and encoding. | Ensure the actual encoding and any declared audio configuration agree; a filename extension is not enough. |
| Your audio is telephone speech or was recorded at a lower native sampling rate | Preserve the source characteristics unless the service specifies otherwise. | Avoid blind resampling. Google recommends 16,000 Hz or higher when possible, while noting that telephone audio may natively use 8 kHz and unnecessary resampling should be avoided. |
What cloud voice AI services accept
Google Cloud Speech-to-Text
Google recommends lossless FLAC or LINEAR16 when you control the source encoding. Its documentation says WAV can contain LINEAR16 or MULAW; when applicable, the service can determine WAV or FLAC encoding and sample rate from the file header. Follow the requirements for the particular request rather than assuming every WAV or FLAC workflow is interchangeable. Encoding documentation · RecognitionConfig reference

Amazon Transcribe
Amazon Transcribe’s supported formats differ between batch and streaming. For best results, its documentation recommends FLAC or WAV with PCM 16-bit for batch, and FLAC or signed 16-bit little-endian PCM for streaming. Check the mode and language support for your use case. Gemini API
Gemini’s audio-understanding documentation lists WAV, MP3 and FLAC among supported MIME types. That establishes compatibility for the documented interface, not universal support across voice AI products or identical treatment of each format. Its documented audio path also gives a figure of 32 tokens per second of audio; this is specific to that path, not a general token rate for voice AI. Gemini audio understanding

Firebase AI Logic inline audio
For the Firebase AI Logic inline-audio workflow described in its documentation, the total request-size limit is 20 MB, and base64 encoding increases the inline payload size. This limit is specific to that workflow, not a universal maximum for Gemini or other providers. Firebase audio analysis documentation
Check the audio settings, not just the extension
A compatible format can still fail or perform poorly if the audio settings do not meet the service’s requirements. Before sending a file or stream, verify:

- Endpoint and mode: Confirm whether you are using batch upload, streaming, inline audio or another interface.
- Encoding: Identify the data inside a WAV file and match the service’s accepted encoding.
- Sampling rate: Use the source’s native rate unless the service calls for another rate. Google recommends 16,000 Hz or higher when possible, but cautions against unnecessary resampling.
- Bit depth and byte order: For example, Amazon’s streaming recommendation specifies signed 16-bit little-endian PCM.
- Channels and language: Check the service-specific audio and language requirements for the selected model or mode.
- Request-size limits: Check the chosen workflow’s limit, including any size increase from encoding audio inline.
Does converting MP3 to WAV improve transcription?
No conversion can restore audio data that MP3 already discarded. Saving an MP3 as WAV changes the container or encoding representation, but it does not turn the source back into lossless audio. If a service does not accept MP3, conversion may make the file usable in the required format; it does not improve the underlying source quality. When possible, go back to the original recording or another lossless copy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does MP3 always reduce recognition accuracy?
The cited service documentation supports choosing lossless input when you control the source, but it does not establish a universal accuracy penalty for MP3 or a fixed improvement percentage for WAV or FLAC. Results depend on the recording and the service. MP3 may be a reasonable practical choice when it is the available source and the target interface accepts it; avoid treating acceptance as proof that lossy and lossless files will perform identically.
