For wet trails, waterfall viewpoints, hikes, and long days outdoors in Iceland, choose waterproof footwear with a useful tread. Comfortable water-resistant shoes may be enough for a mainly urban itinerary in mild, dry conditions. Let your route, season, expected exposure, and the footwear’s fit and grip—not the label alone—settle the choice.
Choose by the day you have planned
| Trip or activity | What to choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly Reykjavík or paved urban stops in mild, dry conditions | Comfortable, well-fitting footwear; water-resistant shoes may be sufficient. | Visit Reykjavík recommends comfortable, water-resistant footwear in seasonal packing advice and good footwear for winter streets. That urban guidance does not establish suitability for wet trails or icy paths. Visit Reykjavík |
| Waterfalls, muddy or rocky viewpoints, or extended time outdoors | Waterproof walking or hiking footwear with useful tread. | Regional packing advice recommends waterproof, sturdy walking shoes with good tread or grip, while Iceland’s Environment Agency warns that weather can change and conditions can be challenging. Visit Reykjanes; Environment Agency of Iceland |
| Hiking | Footwear with secure fit and grip, and support appropriate to your route; waterproof footwear is a sensible choice for wet exposure. | Ferðafélag Íslands emphasizes preparation for Iceland’s weather and wind, with equipment choices depending on personal needs, trip length, forecast, and season. It does not prescribe one boot height or model for every hike. Ferðafélag Íslands hiking guidance |
| Winter streets or paths that may be icy | Footwear suited to conditions, with traction aids such as ice cleats when appropriate. | Visit Reykjanes says winter visitors may want ice cleats, ice grips, or anti-slip soles. The need depends on the surface and conditions, not the calendar alone. Visit Reykjanes |
| Glacier activity | Use the equipment specified by your tour operator and follow Icelandic safety guidance. | The Environment Agency warns that glacier tongues can be slippery and that visiting glaciers requires special equipment and knowledge; it recommends organized trips with experienced guides. Boots alone do not make glacier travel safe. Environment Agency of Iceland |
What “waterproof” and “water-resistant” tell you—and what they do not
The labels do not have one agreed footwear-industry definition. GORE-TEX technical consultant Jonathan Swegle put it this way in a 1 July 2016 article: “There are no agreed upon footwear industry standards for water-repellent, water-resistant, or waterproof footwear.” GORE-TEX, “What Makes Waterproof Hiking Boots Waterproof?”

There is a more specific test method: ISO 17702:2003 describes how to assess footwear upper materials’ resistance to water penetration while flexing, to help determine suitability for an end use. ISO says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2021 and remains current. It is a test method for upper materials, not a universal scale that makes every retail “waterproof” claim directly comparable.
GORE-TEX describes its own whole-footwear assessment as including a walking simulation in a water bath, leak testing, and checks of components for wicking. That is the brand’s testing approach, not an independent universal standard or proof that all waterproof footwear performs alike. GORE-TEX footwear testing

Another ISO reference, ISO 20344:2021, Amendment 1:2024, covers test methods for footwear designed as personal protective equipment. Its scope should not be confused with a universal definition for consumer footwear labels.
Compare the features that affect your route
- Expected exposure: Rain, wet ground, or spray at a waterfall make waterproof footwear more useful than they would be for a brief walk on dry pavement.
- Grip: Look for tread suited to the surfaces you expect. A waterproof label does not establish how well a sole grips.
- Time outdoors: Longer outings increase the importance of comfort and a secure fit, as well as protection from wet conditions.
- Season and ice: Match footwear and any traction aids to current surfaces and conditions.
- Fit and support: Choose what feels secure and provides support appropriate to the route; the available guidance does not identify one universally suitable boot height or model.
- Activity requirements: For glacier trips or guided activities, follow the operator’s instructions rather than treating general packing advice as a substitute.
For wet outdoor routes, longer walks, or hikes, waterproof hiking boots are a reasonable category to consider. Match their grip, support, fit, and insulation to your route and season. For potentially icy winter walking, slip-on ice cleats or other traction aids can be a separate, conditional option—not an item every traveler automatically needs.

Check conditions before setting out
Icelandic weather is variable, and wind can be much stronger on mountains and cliff tops than in sheltered places, according to the Environment Agency of Iceland. Its safety guidance advises choosing clothing and footwear carefully and checking conditions for the area. For hikes, Ferðafélag Íslands highlights weather and wind, recommends navigation equipment and wind- and waterproof clothing, and says other equipment depends on personal needs, trip length, forecast, and season.
