If a problem began after upgrading to a new Windows 11 version, use Settings > System > Recovery > Go back—if Windows still offers it. Microsoft says the option is available “in most cases” for 10 days after an upgrade. Before starting, back up important files and keep the old installation files intact.
Check that you need to undo a feature upgrade
Use Go back when the trouble started after moving to a new version of Windows. If it began after a recent individual update instead, Microsoft treats removing that update as a separate recovery option. The distinction matters: rolling back a feature upgrade and uninstalling a recent update are different actions.

Microsoft’s recovery guide explains the available choices in Recovery options in Windows.
Prepare before you roll back
- Back up important files. Microsoft recommends backing up files before using recovery options.
- Keep the rollback files. The
windows.oldand$windows.~btfolders must remain available. Deleting the previous Windows installation removes the ability to go back, so do not use cleanup tools to remove it while you may still need rollback. - Have the upgrade USB available if applicable. Microsoft notes that you may need the USB drive if you performed the upgrade from one.
- Find your BitLocker recovery key if you may need Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Encrypted devices can require the key to access recovery options.
Microsoft covers the go-back requirements in Go back to the previous version of Windows.
#1 Best Overall
- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
Use the Go back option in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Under Recovery options, select Go back if it appears, then follow the prompts.
- Read the prompts before confirming. Your personal files are kept, but apps and drivers installed after the upgrade are removed and settings changed since the upgrade are reverted. Microsoft also cautions that some apps changed after upgrading may not work as expected after going back.
The option is time-limited: Microsoft says it is available “in most cases” for 10 days after upgrading, and that the previous version is automatically deleted after 10 days. Check the affected PC’s Recovery settings rather than assuming the option will be available for the full period.
If Go back is missing or Windows will not start
Go back is not listed
The rollback window may have passed, or the files required for the previous installation may no longer be present. If the problem followed a smaller, recent update, look for the separate Uninstall updates option in Windows recovery settings instead. If neither option is available, do not delete or recreate recovery files in an attempt to force rollback; Microsoft’s documented options depend on the circumstances and available recovery files.
Windows does not start
Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) recovery options as appropriate. Microsoft documents Uninstall updates there for cases where Windows will not start. On an encrypted device, WinRE may ask for the BitLocker recovery key. See Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment guidance and the Windows recovery options guide.

Consider more disruptive recovery only when needed
Reset this PC and reinstalling Windows are separate, more disruptive options with different effects on files. They are not substitutes for the built-in Go back option when it is available. Review Microsoft’s recovery guidance before choosing either path.

Going back restores the previous Windows version’s state as described by Microsoft, while keeping personal files and removing or reverting certain post-upgrade changes. It does not guarantee that a particular compatibility or performance problem will be fixed on every PC.
