If a Waterfox setting reverts after a restart, first check whether just one setting changed or many did. One setting points toward an override or managed control; many settings point first toward the wrong profile or a problem saving profile data. Waterfox says settings changes save automatically, so repeated reversion is not expected behavior. Waterfox’s settings guide explains where to change preferences.
First, narrow down what is resetting
Write down the exact setting, your Waterfox version and operating system, and when the reset happens. Test a normal Waterfox close and reopen as well as a full computer reboot. Note whether one preference returns to its old value or whether many settings appear to have been reset.

Confirm Waterfox is opening the profile you changed
Waterfox profiles hold separate settings and other browser data. If Waterfox starts with a different profile after reboot, the original setting may still be saved in the profile you used earlier. Waterfox normally opens the most recently used profile unless the startup profile chooser is enabled. See Waterfox’s profile management guide for its profile controls and backup advice.

- In Waterfox, open the profile interface if your release provides it. If it does not, enter
about:profilesin the address bar. - Check which profile is currently open and which is selected for startup. Make sure you change the setting in the profile Waterfox uses after restarting.
- Before inspecting or changing profile files, close Waterfox completely and copy the active profile folder to a separate location. Waterfox recommends making a copy while the browser is closed, or using Waterfox Backup when available. Sync is not a substitute for an independent backup.
If one preference keeps changing back
Look for a preference override
Check the active profile for a user.js file that sets the preference back when the browser starts. Mozilla’s instructions describe this as a Firefox troubleshooting lead: locate the relevant preference line and remove only that line if you understand what it changes. This is upstream Firefox guidance, not confirmation that Waterfox uses or is affected by the same override in your case. See Mozilla’s article on preferences that won’t save.
A relevant extension or other software could also be changing the preference. If the setting changes only when a particular extension or program is active, investigate that software’s settings before editing profile files.

Check whether the setting is managed
Look for an indication in Waterfox that the browser is managed, or check whether the affected control is locked or unavailable. Waterfox documents that operating-system packaging, administrator permissions, enterprise policy, or installation configuration can affect some controls and updates. Its guidance concerns update settings; it does not establish that any particular preference on your computer is managed. If many preferences fail to persist
Check profile write access cautiously
Once you have confirmed the active profile and made a separate backup, check whether the profile folder and its files can be written to, and whether another program might be preventing changes. Mozilla identifies read-only or unwritable prefs.js or prefs.js.moztmp files as possible reasons Firefox cannot save preferences. It also discusses damaged preference files. These are Firefox-specific findings; treat them only as cautious diagnostic leads for Waterfox, not as a confirmed Waterfox cause. The Mozilla article above describes the relevant files.

Do not casually delete prefs.js. Mozilla warns that removing it resets custom preferences and many extension settings. If you consider this last-resort repair, first back up the entire profile with Waterfox closed and be prepared to set preferences again. If you are unsure which file or permission to change, stop and seek help rather than experimenting on the only copy of your profile.
When installation or administration may be involved
Waterfox controls can vary by release and operating system. On Linux, a package-manager installation may leave some settings under system management. Locked controls or differences tied to the installation can also reflect enterprise policy, permissions, or build type. Check whether the device or installation is managed, and consult its administrator if so. Waterfox’s documentation on update controls describes these limitations but does not prove they are responsible for a setting reset.

If the setting still reverts, give Waterfox support or your administrator the exact preference name, Waterfox version, operating system, whether one or many settings are affected, whether it happens after a browser restart or only after a computer reboot, and which profile opens at startup. These details distinguish a profile-selection issue from a save or management problem.
