To know what protection a product offers, check what was tested, which standard or rating was used, and the conditions the manufacturer specifies. An electronics enclosure’s IP code is not a fabric rating, and neither label guarantees protection in every real-world situation.
What do “water-resistant” and “waterproof” actually mean?
They are broad product claims, not universal grades. Their meaning depends on the product category and the test behind the claim. A phone, watch, jacket, bag, and pair of boots may be evaluated in different ways—or the marketing language may not identify a test at all.

Start with the official product specification. Look for the exact rating or test result, the component covered, and any stated limits on exposure, duration, pressure, use, or care. A marketing description alone does not establish those details.

How to interpret an IP water-resistance rating
For electrical-equipment enclosures, IEC 60529 defines the IP Code, a classification of protection provided by enclosures against specified ingress conditions. The IEC publication covers electrical equipment up to a rated voltage of 72.5 kV; it is not a universal rating system for clothing, bags, or all gear. See the IEC 60529 publication record.

In an IP code, the second digit relates to protection against water under defined test conditions. The “X” in a code such as IPX7 means that the code does not state a dust-protection digit. The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2023 summary of IEC 60529 describes these water-test categories:

These descriptions are from the European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2023 report summarizing IEC 60529. They describe different tests, not a simple ladder in which one digit guarantees every exposure associated with the digits below it. A jet test and an immersion test are not interchangeable. The JRC also cautions that an IP rating is an indicative guide to an environment, not proof that a product meets every suitability requirement for that environment.

Does an immersion rating mean a device can stay underwater for days?
No. An immersion claim is bounded by its test conditions and the manufacturer’s product specification. IPX7 is described as temporary immersion under standardized conditions; IPX8 uses continuous-immersion conditions agreed between the manufacturer and user, rather than one depth and duration common to every product. Do not infer that an IPX7 or IPX8 device can be left in a pool for days unless its manufacturer explicitly supports that use.
Water pressure can also change in use. Garmin warns that activity may create pressure above a device’s rated depth, allowing water ingress even when the device has a depth rating. Check the maker’s instructions for the activity you plan to do, rather than treating a depth figure as permission for every underwater use: Garmin’s explanation of water ratings.

How are waterproof fabrics tested?
Fabric water resistance is assessed differently from enclosure ingress protection. ISO 811:2018 specifies a hydrostatic-pressure method for determining a fabric’s resistance to water penetration. The standard applies to fabrics intended to be water resistant whether or not they have a water-resistant or water-repellent finish. ISO reviewed and confirmed the second edition in 2025, and lists it as current: ISO 811:2018.
A result from this fabric method does not, on its own, establish how a complete jacket performs in every activity or weather condition. It is not a universal pass/fail threshold for every garment. Check the manufacturer’s specification for the fabric result and the intended use, and consider how the complete item is built—including seams and closures. The method measures resistance to water penetration; breathability is a separate performance dimension. The ROFA overview of waterproofness and breathability treats water protection and water-vapour permeability as distinct concerns.

How to compare products for the conditions you face
Compare products within the same category, and use the details that matter to your use rather than relying on a bare “waterproof” label.

- Match the exposure. For an enclosure, look for the exact IP code and whether the test concerns splashing, jets, or immersion. For fabric, look for the stated test result and what the maker says it means for the product.
- Check stated limits. Find the manufacturer’s conditions for duration, depth, pressure, activity, use, and care. If the specification does not state a limit, do not supply one yourself.
- Account for construction and condition. Seams, closures, wear, and care can matter to actual clothing performance; for devices, activity can create pressure beyond a rated depth.
- For clothing, consider breathability separately. A garment’s resistance to water penetration does not tell you how readily water vapour passes through it.
When a specification provides no exact rating or test result, the protection claimed remains unclear. Sennheiser recommends checking the official product specification for the exact IP code instead of relying on marketing imagery or terms such as “waterproof” and “water resistant”: Sennheiser’s guide to water-resistance claims.
