A “water-based body scanner” is, in current usage, Midjourney Medical’s proposed water-coupled full-body ultrasound system, which the company calls “Ultrasonic CT.” A person descends through warm water inside a ring of ultrasound elements, and software turns the returned signals into a three-dimensional map. Its first stated purpose is body-composition information for general wellness, not diagnosis. The phrase is not an established generic category of medical device, and the scanner is still in development.
What the term refers to
The phrase attaches to one developing system rather than to a standard technical class. Not all ultrasound requires immersion; ordinary ultrasound uses a handheld probe and gel. Midjourney Medical’s FAQ notes that water coupling also appears in ultrasound tomography research, but the scanner it describes is a particular implementation of that idea.

The reason for the water is acoustic coupling. The company explains that ultrasound travels well through water and poorly through air, so immersion avoids the air gaps that would block the signal. This is the company’s own design rationale; no independent performance validation of it was found.

The 60-second figure, which also appeared in Midjourney’s June 2026 announcement, is a goal, not what the scanner does today. All figures here are company-reported.
Regulatory position
Midjourney Medical says the FDA responded to its 513(g) request on June 4, 2026. It describes the response as classifying the scanner as Class II and exempt from 510(k) premarket notification for the intended general-wellness body-composition use. This is the company’s account. The device is not “FDA approved,” and the FAQ itself distinguishes exemption from approval and says exemption does not mean unregulated.

How accurate is it?
That is unknown. The company says accuracy is not yet characterized well enough for it to quote numbers, and formal verification and validation are in progress. No independent accuracy estimate or clinical validation result was found. Prototype images and technical descriptions are not evidence of diagnostic reliability.
Comparison with DEXA and other methods
The company contrasts its volumetric map with DEXA, which it describes as a two-dimensional projection giving regional totals. It also acknowledges that DEXA has decades of validation while its own system’s validation is still being built.

San Francisco is the first planned spa location. The September 2026 FAQ gives an early-2028 opening target and warns that plans can change; the June announcement had said 2027. Treat early 2028 as a target, not a commitment. No product is available for purchase, and no consumer listing for the scanner exists.

The company’s FAQ itself addresses “Why do I have to get in the water?”, “Is it FDA approved?”, and “How accurate is it, really?” The answers are covered above: water enables acoustic coupling, the device is not FDA approved, and accuracy is not yet quantified.
