On a Samsung Tizen TV, open Smart Hub > Apps > App Settings, type 12345, switch Developer mode to On, enter your computer’s IP address, press OK, and reboot the TV. You don’t need to buy anything. Developer Mode is a connection setting for testing apps from Tizen Studio. It does not unlock paid apps or general sideloading.
Step-by-step: turning Developer Mode on
These are the steps in Samsung’s TV Device documentation. Labels and menu placement can differ between models and firmware versions, so expect small variations.

- Press Home on the remote to open Smart Hub, then select Apps.
- Scroll to the App Settings option (the gear icon).
- Enter
12345with the remote’s number pad or the on-screen keypad. A Developer mode dialog should appear. - Switch Developer mode to On.
- In the IP address field, enter the IP address of the computer that will connect to the TV, then select OK.
- Reboot the TV.
After the reboot, the Apps panel should show a “Develop Mode” label at the top. That label confirms the setting is active.

If Samsung Instant On is enabled
Instant On can keep the TV from fully restarting, so a normal power-off may not apply the change. Samsung’s troubleshooting FAQ says to power-cycle the TV instead: disconnect the power cord, then reconnect it.

Connecting the TV to Tizen Studio
Enabling the setting is only half the job. To launch and test an app, you also need a computer set up as follows:
- The computer and TV on the same network.
- Tizen Studio installed, with a certificate profile configured.
- Current firmware on the TV, per Samsung’s setup guidance.
- In Tizen Studio, open Tools > Device Manager.
- Use Remote Device Manager to add a device, entering the TV’s IP address.
- Turn the connection on.
You can find the TV’s IP address in the TV’s network settings. The address you typed into Developer Mode on the TV should be your computer’s, not the TV’s.

If the connection fails
- Check that Developer mode still shows On and that “Develop Mode” appears in the Apps panel.
- Confirm both devices are on the same network, not a guest network or separate VLAN.
- Check that the computer IP you entered is current. A changed IP (for example, after a DHCP lease renewal) means you must re-enter it.
- Try Samsung’s command-line alternative:
sdb connect <TV IP address>. - With Instant On, power-cycle the TV rather than just turning it off.
What Developer Mode is not
Developer Mode lets you launch applications on the TV from Tizen Studio. It does not unlock paid apps or streaming libraries, and it is not a shortcut for installing arbitrary apps.
USB installation is also off the table for consumer TVs. Samsung states that for security reasons, installing applications or widgets through USB is no longer supported, and that consumer TVs can’t install .wgt packages from a USB drive. Samsung’s FAQ mentions a separate USB Demo Packaging Tool for .tmg packages and license files, but that is a specialized workflow and not a general consumer route.

Special case: HbbTV debugging with Web Inspector
Samsung documents a separate use for HbbTV developers. Its page says all Samsung Smart TVs in the 2024 lineup (D series) support Web Inspector for HbbTV. You need:
- Current TV firmware and Developer Mode turned on.
- A computer on the same network with a Chromium-based browser.
- Access to the TV’s IP address on port 7014 while an HbbTV app is open.
Samsung labels this feature experimental and intended exclusively for the HbbTV community. Check that your model is covered before relying on it. Ordinary users and general app developers can ignore it.

Turning it off
Samsung’s guide covers enabling, not disabling. If you no longer need the connection, the logical route is to reopen the same dialog and set Developer mode to Off, then restart the TV. That reversal isn’t spelled out in the documentation I’m drawing on, so confirm the menu on your own model.
