Plugging a DVD drive straight into a tablet is a separate, device-specific possibility—not a guaranteed plug-and-play method. A digital download is another offline option, but it is not playback from your physical disc.

Use a computer to prepare and transfer a file
Android media apps can play compatible video files, but installing a player does not turn a tablet into a universal DVD player. VideoLAN lists VLC for Android as supporting video and audio files as well as DVD ISO images; that does not mean VLC automatically plays every commercial DVD from an attached drive. - Make sure you have a file you are allowed to use. Use a compatible video file already available to you, or another lawful way to make the content available. Rules and rights can differ by location and disc. Do not bypass copy protection.
- Transfer the file to the tablet. For a Pixel Tablet, Google’s instructions are to unlock it, connect it to the computer by USB, tap the USB notification, select “File Transfer,” then drag the file from the computer. Some Pixel Tablet steps require Android 14 or later, and the cable must support data transfer. Other Android tablets may use different menus; follow the manufacturer’s instructions. - Open the file in VLC. Install VLC for Android from a trusted app store, browse to the transferred file, and play it. Playback performance can vary by tablet and hardware-decoding support. If a file will not open or plays poorly, the file’s format or encoding may not suit the device.
When an external DVD drive might work
Some portable DVD workflows are designed for phones or tablets, but that is not proof that any USB drive will work with any Android tablet. Before connecting or buying a drive, check the documentation for both the tablet and the drive. Confirm USB host or OTG support, the connector or adapter required, the drive’s power needs, and whether a supported app can recognize it. A USB-C port by itself does not establish optical-drive support. Even if the drive connects, the disc and playback app must also be compatible.

A Pixel Tablet Community reply suggests a USB-C or OTG connection and says extra power, such as a powered OTG cable, may be needed. The respondent explicitly said they had not personally tested the setup, so treat it as a troubleshooting clue, not a compatibility guarantee. Read the Pixel Tablet community discussion.
Consider a separate download for offline viewing
If you do not need to use the physical disc, an eligible digital movie purchase or rental may be easier to download and watch offline in a supported app. Google Play Help says purchased videos can be downloaded on up to five devices and rented videos on one; availability varies by country. This is a separate digital copy, not a way to play the DVD. Check Google Play’s offline-download guidance.

Respect disc rights and copy protection
Whether you may copy or convert content from a DVD depends on applicable local law and the rights attached to that disc. Do not assume that owning the disc makes every copying method lawful, or use instructions that defeat DRM. Google’s cited policy concerns advertising: it bars ads for tools that remove DRM or bypass technical protection measures, including DVD rippers. It is not a complete statement of copyright law.
