Soil level tells your washing machine how dirty you consider the load. Choose Light for lightly worn clothes, Normal (or the cycle preset) for everyday laundry, and Heavy for clothes with visible dirt, food stains, or noticeable odors. It is separate from both the wash cycle and load size. What the control changes—such as wash time, water use, or wash action—depends on the washer and cycle, so check your model’s manual.
What soil level means—and what it does not
Soil level is your estimate of how much dirt, staining, or odor is on the laundry. It is not a measure of how full the drum is, and it does not replace choosing a cycle suited to the garments. Whirlpool describes soil level as a way to fine-tune wash performance on select models; its cycle and water-level guidance distinguishes this control from the cycle’s wash action, temperature, and spin settings. Whirlpool’s soil-level guide and its guide to washer water levels explain those differences.

Which soil level should you use?
| Setting | Use it for | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Lightly worn clothes or a load with little visible soil. | On some Whirlpool top-load models, a lower setting can help reduce tangling and wrinkling. It may also shorten the wash time; effects vary by machine. |
| Normal or cycle preset | Everyday garments with ordinary amounts of soil. | A sensible starting point for routine laundry. The cycle may set or limit which soil options are available. |
| Heavy | Loads with visible dirt, food stains, or noticeable odors. | On cited Whirlpool models, a higher setting adds wash time. Check your manual for the effect on your washer. |
These examples follow Whirlpool’s soil-level guidance and its top-load washer support guidance; they are not a universal specification for every brand or model.
How to choose without overthinking it
- Choose the cycle for the fabric or item first. Follow garment care labels and the washer’s cycle guide; soil level is a modifier, not a substitute for the right cycle.
- Assess the laundry’s soil. Use Light for lightly worn items, the preset or Normal for ordinary everyday laundry, and Heavy when dirt, stains, or odor are apparent.
- Check which options the cycle allows. Some washers preset soil level or restrict adjustments on certain cycles.
- Use the manual to confirm the effect. Look up the model-specific soil-level control if you need to know whether it changes time, wash action, water use, or detergent dispensing.
For a stain that needs extra attention, pretreating the affected area before washing is a separate step; Whirlpool discusses stain treatment and other preparation in its soil-level guide. A higher setting does not replace checking that the chosen cycle is suitable for the fabric.

What changing soil level can affect
Wash time is a common effect, but the exact mechanism is model-dependent. Whirlpool says soil-level changes can affect time and, on machines with bulk dispensers, detergent quantity. Its top-load support page also notes that estimated remaining time changes with the selection and that lower settings can reduce tangling and wrinkling on the covered models.
Other manufacturers document different effects. Samsung says that raising soil level uses more water on the machines covered by its water-fill guidance. The LG WM8000 manual says soil-level adjustments modify cycle times and/or wash actions, adding time for heavily soiled loads or reducing it for lightly soiled loads. Those examples show why it is not safe to assume every washer changes the same variables.

The available controls and their interaction vary by model and cycle. See Whirlpool’s water-level guide for the distinction in its washer guidance.

- Check whether your washer’s manual says Heavy changes time, wash action, water, or another setting, and whether the selected cycle permits that adjustment.
- Use the detergent type and amount specified for your machine. Whirlpool’s top-load guidance advises HE detergent in applicable machines and says to follow detergent-maker dosage based on soil level and load size.
