Washer-dryer combos usually dry less laundry than they can wash. Washing capacity and drying capacity are separate ratings because clothes need free space to tumble and expose moisture to the machine’s drying system. Check both numbers for your exact model, and follow its fill line or manual rather than assuming every combo can dry half a wash load.
What “wash capacity” and “dry capacity” actually mean
A washer-dryer combo uses one drum for two different jobs. The wash rating is the maximum dry weight of laundry the machine is designed to wash in one cycle. The dry rating is the maximum load the same appliance can effectively dry. Those figures can be different even when they appear together on the same product label.

Manufacturers publish the ratings separately because washing and drying place different demands on the drum. Water and detergent can move through a tightly packed wash load. Drying requires clothing to lift, separate and tumble so warm or conditioned air can reach wet surfaces and so removed moisture can leave the drum. A load that is acceptable for washing can therefore be too dense for effective drying.
LG USA Support states plainly that “The drying capacity is smaller than the washing capacity.” Its guidance also warns that loading too much laundry can leave items partly wet or make the drying cycle take too long. The exact limit is model-specific: the capacity label and owner’s manual for your appliance take precedence over any general rule.

Why a full wash load may need to be split
If you wash the maximum rated load, you may need to remove some items before starting a dry cycle. That is normal unless the model’s documentation explicitly gives the same maximum for washing and drying. Splitting the load creates the air space needed for tumbling and can reduce the time and energy spent repeatedly drying a crowded drum.
Do not interpret “smaller” as a universal requirement to remove exactly half. A combo rated for 10 kg washing and 6 kg drying has a different limit from one rated for 9 kg washing and 5 kg drying. Some manuals express the limit as a weight; others provide a fill mark or instructions such as “half full.” Use the instruction written for the model in front of you.
There is no universal half-load formula
Manufacturer guidance often uses “about half” as a practical rule, but the figures differ by product, market and drying design. These examples show why a category-wide ratio would be misleading.

The Westinghouse example works out to 5 kg of drying against 9 kg of washing, but that ratio cannot be transferred to another appliance. Haier, LG and Whirlpool likewise describe limits for particular systems or product families. Capacity can also vary with the market, model revision and selected cycle.
Why drying needs more empty space
Tumbling and airflow
Drying works only when wet fabric repeatedly falls through the drum and is exposed to the machine’s air path. A densely packed load forms a heavy bundle: the outside may feel warm while the center stays damp. Extra space lets items separate, which improves contact with moving air and gives moisture a path out.
Moisture removal is a separate engineering problem
The cited manufacturer material does not provide one engineering equation that predicts every model’s ratio. Drum volume, heater or condenser design, airflow, sensors, spin performance and control software all affect the published limit. The practical result is consistent, however: a washer-rated load can exceed what the drying system can process efficiently.

Fabric and water content change the result
Thick towels, denim, bedding and other absorbent items retain more water than lightweight synthetics. The operating guidance reviewed for combo appliances identifies material type, spin speed and laundry amount as factors that affect drying time. Two loads with the same scale weight can therefore finish at different times.

Do not assume every washer-dryer combo dries in the same way. The drying method affects installation, cycle time and what checks are relevant when laundry remains wet.
Ventless condensation systems
In a ventless design, moisture is condensed inside the appliance and drained rather than exhausted through a wall duct. Samsung’s overview describes ventless models as not requiring external ductwork, which gives more flexibility in apartments or rooms without a dryer vent. Whirlpool says ventless drying usually takes longer than vented drying, so a longer cycle is not automatically a fault.
LG’s support guidance describes cold water being used to condense moisture in the combo units it covers. For those models, the water supply must be available during drying; a closed tap or incorrectly connected hose can interfere with moisture removal. Haier’s cited support article also identifies the unit it addresses as ventless condensate type.
Vented systems
Samsung describes vented drying as exhausting warm, moist air through external ducting. Vented installation can offer faster drying, but it requires a correctly sized and routed exhaust path, plus the clearances specified by the installation instructions. Never substitute a vented installation assumption for a model that is designed to condense and drain moisture.

Why the distinction matters when comparing models
A ventless combo may fit where a vented appliance cannot, but its cycles can be longer. A vented model may remove moisture faster, yet the room must support external ducting. Compare the drying configuration, utility connections and installation instructions alongside the capacity numbers rather than treating “combo” as one standardized design.

How to load a combo for reliable drying
- Find both ratings. Read the appliance label, specification sheet or owner’s manual for separate washing and drying capacities. Record the units used—kilograms or pounds—and the model number.
- Check the model’s fill instruction. If the manual shows a drying line or says half full or less, use that physical limit even when the remaining laundry weighs less than the maximum.
- Estimate the wettest items. Towels, jeans, blankets and other dense fabrics need more room than a similarly weighted load of shirts. Keep bulky articles within the manual’s item limits.
- Use the highest appropriate spin speed. For the Whirlpool guidance cited, a high-speed spin can improve drying performance and cycle time. Choose a speed that the fabric-care labels permit.
- Redistribute or split after washing. If the drum is packed, remove enough laundry to restore the required space. Dry the remainder in a second load rather than extending one overloaded cycle.
- Select the correct dry program. Sensor, timed, low-temperature and fabric-specific programs can behave differently. Follow the manual for maximum loads and temperature restrictions.
- Confirm water and hose connections where required. LG’s guidance calls for the water supply to be on and for hot and cold hoses not to be reversed on the units covered by its article.
- Clean and maintain only as instructed. Filters, drains, condenser areas and other service points differ by model. Use the appliance’s maintenance schedule instead of applying a generic cleaning procedure.
Why a washer-dryer combo is not drying properly
The drum is overloaded
This is the first check when clothes finish damp. A load can be within the wash rating yet exceed the dry rating or fill line. Remove part of the load and run the appropriate dry cycle again. If the smaller load dries normally, the original problem was capacity or tumbling space rather than a failed heater.
The wash left too much water in the fabric
A weak or interrupted spin leaves more moisture for the dryer to remove. Inspect the load for imbalance, confirm that the selected spin speed is allowed for the fabrics and run an additional spin cycle when the manual recommends it. LG specifically suggests a spin cycle if laundry did not spin out well.
The water supply or hose arrangement is wrong
For LG systems that use cold water to condense moisture, verify that the supply tap is open and that the hot and cold hoses are connected to the correct inlets. A drying process that depends on condensation cannot work as intended without the required water flow.

The load is unusually absorbent
Thick cottons, towels and bedding can extend a cycle even when the weight is within the rating. Separate heavy items from lighter garments where the manual permits, use an appropriate program and allow more time than a small mixed-fabric load would need.
The appliance is ventless
Whirlpool’s product help notes that ventless drying usually takes longer than vented drying. Before treating a long cycle as a malfunction, identify the system and compare the observed time with the model’s manual. A ventless design should not be modified with an improvised exhaust duct.
There is a maintenance or drainage problem
Restricted drains, dirty filters or blocked condenser passages can reduce moisture removal, but the locations and cleaning methods are model-dependent. Consult the exact manual for checks, warning codes and service intervals. If the appliance still cannot dry a correctly sized load after those checks, arrange model-specific service rather than continuing to overload it.

What to compare before buying a combo
Capacity is only useful when read with the drying system and installation requirements. Use this checklist when comparing documented models.

Samsung’s comparison material frames vented systems as faster but dependent on external ducting, while ventless systems offer installation flexibility with a possible speed trade-off. Those are Samsung’s descriptions of its marketed models, not independent comparative test results. Manufacturer capacity and cycle-time claims should be read in the same model-specific way.

Example: a 9 kg wash and 5 kg dry model
With the Westinghouse EasyCare WWW9024M5WA specification, a 9 kg wash load cannot be transferred automatically to a 5 kg dry cycle. After washing, weigh or divide the laundry so no more than 5 kg enters the drying step, and keep bulky items within the manual’s fill guidance. The remaining items require a second dry cycle or another drying method.
Example: a model that says “half full”
Whirlpool’s all-in-one guidance recommends loading the drum half full or less to improve drying performance and cycle time. That instruction is about usable space, not a promise that half the machine’s wash-weight rating equals the correct dry weight. Follow the fill mark and any separate kilogram or pound limit together.
When a separate dryer may make more sense
If your routine regularly produces more laundry than the combo’s dry rating, a separate washer and dryer set can avoid splitting every wash. The appropriate choice depends on your available space, utilities, installation rules and budget; no particular set is established by the manufacturer guidance summarized here. A combo remains practical when space or a single-appliance workflow matters more than drying a full wash load at once.

Can I dry the maximum washing load?
Only if the exact model’s dry rating or manual allows it. Otherwise, remove enough laundry to meet the lower dry limit or fill line.

Is a washer-dryer combo’s dry capacity always half its wash capacity?
No. “About half” appears in guidance from LG, Haier and Whirlpool, but the Westinghouse example is 9 kg washing and 5 kg drying. These are product-specific statements, not a universal formula.
Why does my combo take so long to dry?
An overloaded drum, low spin extraction, absorbent fabrics, a ventless design or a water, drain or maintenance issue can all contribute. Start with the model’s dry limit and fill instruction, then follow its troubleshooting sequence.
Does a ventless combo need a dryer vent?
Samsung describes ventless models as condensing moisture and not requiring external ductwork. Confirm the exact model’s installation instructions because a vented model has different requirements.
Should I turn on cold water during drying?
LG’s guidance for the combo units it covers uses cold water for condensation and says to verify that the water supply is on. Other designs may differ, so follow your appliance’s manual rather than applying LG’s arrangement to every brand.
What should I do if a smaller load is still damp?
Check the spin result, hose and water-supply requirements, drainage, filters and model-specific error messages. If the documented checks do not solve the problem, contact service with the model number and the observed symptoms.
