Character designer Rui Komatsuzaki describes earlier concept work, including a rejected anatomy-model idea, before the team settled on Monokuma’s familiar bear form.
What Kodaka meant by “five minutes”
In a 2017 interview with Gameblog, the interviewer asked whether Kodaka had devised Monokuma and simply instructed someone else to draw the character. Kodaka instead described character creation as a staff effort involving substantial discussion and many meetings. He then recalled that Monokuma came together in five minutes during one of those meetings.

That makes “designed in five minutes” a shorthand for the speed of the idea’s emergence, as Kodaka remembered it—not a verified duration for drawing, refining, or completing the mascot. The interview provides no independent timing record.
How the black-and-white bear took shape
Komatsuzaki, the original game’s character designer, gives a complementary account in a development-era post. The team first considered an anatomy-model mascot because the story took place at a school, but discarded that direction.

They then drew on the story’s “shiro” (white) and “kuro” (black) language: white for everyone else and black for the culprit. Red was added to evoke Spike’s company color, and the mascot became a bear. Komatsuzaki says the design received small refinements afterward, including the addition of a tail. The post does not give a precise timeline for those decisions.
Why Monokuma needed two sides
Kodaka said the team wanted a character embodying both hope and despair, with a dual personality reflected in the white-and-black contrast. The colors therefore do more than make the mascot visually distinctive: they connect the character to the story’s opposing sides and its language of innocence and guilt.

In a later interview with Game Developer, Kodaka described Monokuma as starting out black and white and evolving as he wrote into a vehicle for his own thoughts and opinions. That is Kodaka’s account of the character’s role in his writing, rather than a production record.
A collaboration, not a single lightning-bolt drawing
The five-minute anecdote and Komatsuzaki’s design history describe different parts of the process. Kodaka’s interview is evidence for a rapid concept taking shape at a meeting; Komatsuzaki’s account explains the discarded concept and visual choices that shaped the mascot. Neither establishes that a finished illustration was completed in five minutes.

A PlayStation.Blog interview also describes a back-and-forth between Kodaka and Komatsuzaki: Kodaka gave direction, while design ideas could prompt him to revise the scenario to showcase them. Taken together, the accounts support a collaborative process in which a central idea could arrive quickly even as the broader creative work involved discussion and iteration.
