The message is a symptom, not a confirmed diagnosis: the official guidance does not identify one cause or guarantee one fix for it.
Start with service status
Check Activision’s online services status for Warzone, then check Steam’s service status. Activision and Steam both put service availability among the first things to check when troubleshooting a connection. If either reports an outage or alert, changing files or firewall settings on your PC is unlikely to address that service-side condition.

Restart Steam and your PC
Close Steam, reopen it, and restart the PC before testing Warzone again. Treat this as a simple diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix. If the disconnect began after a Steam client update or a firewall prompt, note that timing: Steam says a recent client update can coincide with the firewall blocking the client, so permissions may need attention.

Check Warzone’s installed files in Steam
Activision explicitly recommends verifying Warzone’s game files for Steam players. In Steam, open your Library, right-click Call of Duty, select Properties, open Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam finish its check and any repair, then launch the game and see whether the disconnect returns. This checks the local installation; it does not resolve a service outage or unstable connection.

Test for interfering background software
Activision advises disabling programs that may interfere with Steam. Its examples for possible Warzone conflicts include NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex. Close these, if installed, along with other nonessential overlays or monitoring tools, then retest. These are candidates to test, not proof that any particular program caused your error. If closing one changes the result, re-enable programs one at a time to identify a repeatable conflict.
Review antivirus and firewall permissions
Activision recommends adding the entire Warzone folder to your antivirus exception list. Use your security software’s own settings to add that folder, rather than disabling antivirus protection altogether.

Steam’s firewall guidance notes that a recent update can require renewed permissions. Check that your firewall allows the appropriate Steam executables and Warzone through the network. If you briefly disable a firewall to test whether it is involved, turn it back on immediately afterward; Steam explicitly does not recommend leaving it disabled. Prefer correcting a narrow permission rule over keeping protection off.

Activision says Wi-Fi reliability varies and recommends wired Ethernet during online play. If practical, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet and try Warzone again. A wired test can help distinguish a Wi-Fi or local-link problem from other causes, but it cannot establish that Ethernet will fix a server, Steam, or game-file issue. If you cannot use Ethernet, compare the result on another stable connection, if available.

Before buying a cable just for this test, check that both your PC and router have Ethernet ports. Activision Support’s Warzone connection guide, dated November 14, 2022, says: “We strongly recommend using a wired Ethernet connection during online gameplay.” Its connection advice includes console-only steps as well; those instructions do not apply to a PC.
Choose the next step from what still disconnects

These observations help narrow the branch to investigate; they do not prove a root cause by themselves. If the problem continues, check both service-status pages again and record whether other Steam games or services disconnect too. Contact the relevant platform support if the evidence points to Steam or Warzone, or your internet service provider if the connection issue extends beyond the game. Activision advises contacting the ISP when its listed network troubleshooting does not resolve connectivity problems.

Which fixes are safest to try first?
- Low-risk checks: Check service status, restart Steam and the PC, verify Warzone files, and test a wired connection if available.
- Targeted changes: Close potential conflicting programs and adjust antivirus or firewall permissions only where needed.
- Avoid broad resets without a diagnosis: The official guidance reviewed does not establish registry edits, unsupported port changes, permanent firewall shutdowns, or Windows reinstallation as universal fixes for this exact message.
Activision’s current PC requirements page, dated March 11, 2026, lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 support, not Windows 7 or 8. It also lists graphics drivers in a context for graphical issues, not as a remedy for this Steam-disconnect message; check Activision’s live PC requirements and graphics information for current details rather than treating a driver update as a proven connectivity fix.
