“The application has unexpectedly stopped working” is a crash message, not a diagnosis of one specific Warzone fault. On PC, record where it happens, repair the game files in your launcher, follow Activision’s current Windows and graphics-driver guidance, and let Shader Preloading finish before testing again. These steps are troubleshooting checks, not a guaranteed fix.
First, note when the crash occurs
Before changing settings, record the full error message, any code displayed, and the time of the crash. Note whether it happens before the Main Menu, during Shader Preloading, or after you enter a match. Also note your launcher, Windows version, GPU and driver version, and which steps you try. Activision’s guidance for this message recommends providing those details if you report it: Activision’s crash and freeze guidance.

Repair Warzone’s files in your launcher
Use the repair option for the launcher where you installed the game. The labels differ between Battle.net and Steam:
- Battle.net: Open Warzone, select the gear icon beside the Play button, then choose Scan and Repair and Begin Scan.
- Steam: Open your Library, right-click Call of Duty, choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
Activision includes launcher file repair among its PC troubleshooting steps: Warzone PC requirements and troubleshooting. File checks are a sensible first step, but they do not guarantee that every crash will be resolved.

Check Windows and graphics-driver guidance
Activision supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 and recommends using the latest version of either. Windows 7 and Windows 8 are unsupported. Check Activision’s current Warzone PC requirements and driver recommendations before installing a graphics driver; listed versions can change, and the page also identifies a last recommended driver for NVIDIA Maxwell and Pascal graphics architectures. Confirm that your PC meets the minimum requirements as well.
Let Shader Preloading complete
On first boot, leave the game at the Main Menu while Shader Preloading finishes. Activision says this is an important part of first boot; navigating away from the Main Menu stops the process and can contribute to performance issues. If the crash occurs during preloading, record that as the failure point and test again after allowing the process to complete.

Check the software Activision identifies as possible conflicts
If the crash persists, Activision recommends disabling NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as troubleshooting checks. It also suggests starting Windows with a clean boot and only the minimum programs running. If you use Razer Synapse, Activision separately advises updating it. Retest the same situation, then report a recurring crash
- Launch Warzone after completing the checks above.
- Repeat the action or reach the same point that triggered the crash, such as loading into a match.
- If the same error returns, submit Activision’s Call of Duty PC Crash Report. Include the message and code, crash point, Windows and GPU-driver details, launcher, and steps already attempted.
If the crash now happens at a different point, record the new symptom rather than assuming its cause is unchanged. You can also check Activision’s current known-issues information; the message itself does not establish a single underlying cause.

What these steps can—and cannot—tell you
Activision provides general PC troubleshooting for Warzone, but its guidance does not identify a separate root cause or universal fix for the exact wording “The application has unexpectedly stopped working.” The steps above apply to PC players using Steam or Battle.net. The available guidance does not establish an equivalent fix for this exact message on PlayStation or Xbox.
